English Explanation
Genesis 34:24 is part of the troubling account involving Dinah, Shechem, Hamor, Jacob, and Jacob’s sons. To understand this verse properly, it is important to read it within the wider context of Genesis chapter 34.
Dinah, the daughter of Jacob and Leah, had gone out to see the women of the surrounding land. Shechem, the son of Hamor the Hivite, saw her, took her, and dishonored her. Afterward, Shechem desired to marry Dinah and asked his father Hamor to arrange the marriage.
Hamor then approached Jacob and Jacob’s sons. He proposed that the families should intermarry and live together. Shechem also offered compensation and gifts in an attempt to obtain Dinah as his wife.
Jacob’s sons, however, were deeply angered because their sister had been dishonored. They responded deceptively. They told Hamor and Shechem that they could not give Dinah to a man who was uncircumcised. They proposed that all the males of the city should be circumcised. According to their proposal, the two communities could then intermarry and become one people.
Genesis 34:24 records the response of the men of the city. They listened to Hamor and Shechem and accepted the requirement. Consequently, every male who went out of the gate of the city was circumcised.
The expression “hearkened” means that they listened to and followed the proposal. The verse therefore emphasizes the willingness of the men of the city to accept Hamor and Shechem’s agreement with Jacob’s sons.
The reference to “the gate of his city” is also significant. In the ancient biblical world, the city gate was an important public place. It was associated with community affairs, legal matters, business, and public decisions. The people mentioned in this passage were therefore not simply a few private individuals. The decision involved the wider male population of the city.
However, Genesis 34:24 should not be understood as presenting the circumcision of these men as a genuine expression of faith or obedience to God. In the biblical narrative, circumcision had already been established as a covenant sign associated with Abraham and his descendants. Here, the men of Shechem accepted circumcision because they believed the proposed agreement would provide social and economic advantages.
The following verses reveal the tragic consequences. Simeon and Levi, Dinah’s brothers, took advantage of the weakened condition of the men of the city. They attacked the city and killed the males. This makes Genesis 34:24 an important part of a larger narrative about deception, violence, revenge, and the misuse of a sacred covenant sign.
One of the central lessons of the passage is that outward religious practice does not necessarily demonstrate genuine devotion to God. The men of Shechem underwent circumcision, but the narrative does not portray them as entering into Abraham’s covenant through faith. Their motivation was connected to the proposed union of the two communities and the material benefits they expected.
The passage also demonstrates the destructive consequences of revenge. Dinah’s dishonor was a serious wrong, but Simeon and Levi responded through deception and mass violence. Later in Genesis, Jacob strongly condemns their actions. Therefore, the chapter should not be read as approving their revenge.
Genesis 34:24 is consequently best understood within its full narrative context. The verse itself describes what happened: the men listened to Hamor and Shechem and were circumcised. The verses that follow show why this decision became part of a much darker event.
