English Explanation of Exodus 2:5

Exodus 2:5 describes a decisive moment in the early life of Moses. Before this event, Pharaoh had commanded that Hebrew baby boys should be cast into the river. Moses’ mother could no longer hide him, so she placed him in a specially prepared ark or basket among the reeds beside the river. His sister remained nearby to observe what would happen to him. The arrival of Pharaoh’s daughter at precisely this location becomes the turning point in the story.

The verse begins by saying that “the daughter of Pharaoh came down to wash herself at the river.” The river is generally understood in the larger context to be the Nile. Modern translations frequently render the Hebrew setting as the Nile and translate “ark among the flags” as a basket or container among the reeds. The KJV retains the traditional expression “ark among the flags.”

The word “ark” here should not be understood as referring to a large ship. It describes the small container that Moses’ mother prepared for her baby. Exodus 2:3 explains that she made it from bulrushes and waterproofed it with slime and pitch before placing Moses inside. Thus, the basket provided protection while allowing the child to remain hidden among the river vegetation.

The verse also mentions “her maidens”, who walked beside the river. This detail shows that Pharaoh’s daughter was accompanied by attendants. While she was at the river, she noticed something unusual among the vegetation: the ark containing the child.

The phrase “when she saw the ark among the flags” is especially important. Moses had been hidden among the reeds, but the hiding place did not prevent him from being discovered. His mother had done everything she could to protect him, yet the next stage of his life depended on circumstances beyond her control.

Pharaoh’s daughter then “sent her maid to fetch it.” Her decision brought Moses directly into the royal household. The following verse tells us that when she opened the basket, she saw the baby crying and had compassion on him. She understood that he was one of the Hebrew children.

There is a striking contrast in this passage. Pharaoh had ordered the destruction of Hebrew male infants, yet Pharaoh’s own daughter became the person through whom this particular Hebrew child was rescued. The narrative therefore presents a remarkable reversal: the child threatened by Pharaoh’s policy comes into the protection of Pharaoh’s own household.

The story then takes another remarkable turn. Moses’ sister approaches Pharaoh’s daughter and offers to find a Hebrew woman to nurse the child. Pharaoh’s daughter agrees, and Moses’ own mother is brought back to care for him. Consequently, the child is protected and his mother is even paid to nurse him.

From a biblical perspective, Exodus 2:5 can therefore be read as an important example of God’s providence. The verse itself simply records the actions of Pharaoh’s daughter, but within the larger narrative, her arrival, the discovery of the basket, her compassion, and the return of Moses to his mother all contribute to the preservation of the child who would later become the great leader of Israel.

Another important theme is that human actions and divine providence work together in the narrative. Moses’ mother acted courageously by making the basket. His sister watched carefully. Pharaoh’s daughter noticed the child and acted with compassion. Each action contributes to the preservation of Moses.

The verse also teaches that a situation that appears hopeless can change unexpectedly. Moses was a vulnerable infant placed among the reeds, while his people were suffering under oppression. Yet this apparently small event became part of the story through which Moses was preserved.

Detailed Urdu Explanation —
