Exodus 2:7 Meaning and Explanation
Exodus 2:7 is a short verse, but it plays a very important role in the story of Moses. It describes the moment when Moses’ sister approaches Pharaoh’s daughter and offers a practical solution for caring for the Hebrew baby. The verse also connects the danger facing Moses with the remarkable way in which he is reunited with his own mother.
The surrounding passage explains that Moses’ mother had placed him in a carefully prepared basket among the reeds beside the river because she could no longer hide him safely. Pharaoh had commanded that Hebrew male infants should be killed. Pharaoh’s daughter eventually discovered the child, recognized that he was a Hebrew child, and felt compassion for him. , Moses’ sister was watching what would happen to him. She then spoke directly to Pharaoh’s daughter.
“Then said his sister to Pharaoh’s daughter”
The phrase “his sister” refers to Moses’ sister, who is identified elsewhere in Scripture as Miriam. Exodus 2 does not give her name in this immediate scene, but later biblical information identifies Moses’ sister as Miriam.
Her action is significant because she did not simply stand by and watch. She recognized an opportunity to help her baby brother.
Miriam was speaking to a member of the royal household. Pharaoh’s daughter was a person of considerable authority, while Miriam belonged to the oppressed Hebrew people. Under those circumstances, approaching Pharaoh’s daughter required courage, careful judgment, and confidence.
“Shall I go and call to thee a nurse”
The word “nurse” in this context refers to a woman who could breastfeed and care for the infant. Wet-nursing was a known practice in the ancient world, particularly when an infant needed specialized care or when a woman from a household could not nurse the child herself.
Miriam’s suggestion was simple: instead of leaving Pharaoh’s daughter to find someone herself, Miriam could find a Hebrew woman who could nurse the baby.
This proposal was particularly important because Miriam knew exactly where such a woman could be found.
The following verse shows what happened. Pharaoh’s daughter agreed, and Miriam went and called the child’s mother.
“Of the Hebrew women”
This detail is especially meaningful.
Pharaoh’s daughter had already recognized that the baby was one of the Hebrews. Miriam therefore offered to find a woman from among the Hebrew women to nurse him.
The suggestion was practical, but it also opened the way for Moses’ own mother to return to him.
In the next verses, Pharaoh’s daughter tells the woman to take the child and nurse him. She even offers payment for the work. The woman takes Moses and nurses him.
Thus, the mother who had been forced to separate from her child receives an opportunity to care for him again.
“That she may nurse the child for thee”
The purpose of Miriam’s suggestion was clear: the Hebrew woman would nurse the child on behalf of Pharaoh’s daughter.
This arrangement produced an extraordinary reversal of circumstances.
Moses had been placed in the river because his family feared for his life. Yet the same river became the setting in which Pharaoh’s daughter discovered him. Then Moses’ own mother was brought back into his life as his nurse.
The passage therefore presents a striking example of how circumstances can change unexpectedly.
Pharaoh’s decree had placed Moses in danger, but he was ultimately brought under the protection of Pharaoh’s own household. The following verses explain that Moses eventually grew and was brought to Pharaoh’s daughter, who adopted him as her son and called his name Moses.
Spiritual Lessons from Exodus 2:7
1. Courage can appear in a difficult situation
Miriam was young, yet she acted wisely in an extremely serious situation. She did not approach Pharaoh’s daughter with unnecessary confrontation. Instead, she presented a practical solution.
Her example shows that courage does not always mean making a dramatic speech or taking a visible stand. Sometimes courage means recognizing the right opportunity and taking a wise step.
2. Wisdom and action can work together
Miriam did not merely hope that something would happen. She observed the situation and proposed a solution.
This teaches an important principle: faith and responsible action are not necessarily opposites. A person can trust God while also using wisdom, observation, communication, and practical action.
3. The family bond is important
Miriam’s concern was centered on her younger brother.
She had been watching over him from a distance, and when the opportunity came, she acted to protect him. Her actions demonstrate the importance of family responsibility and loving concern.
4. Moses’ mother was reunited with her child
One of the most remarkable aspects of the passage is that Miriam’s suggestion leads directly to Moses’ mother being called.
Pharaoh’s daughter says, “Go,” and the girl calls the child’s mother. Pharaoh’s daughter then instructs the mother to nurse Moses and promises to pay her.
What initially looked like a heartbreaking separation therefore became a temporary separation followed by reunion.
5. God can work through ordinary people
The passage highlights several people: Moses’ mother, Moses’ sister, Pharaoh’s daughter, and the servants around her.
The preservation of Moses did not happen through one dramatic event alone. It involved a series of ordinary human actions—protecting a baby, watching from a distance, speaking at the right moment, finding a nurse, and caring for a child.
For readers of the biblical narrative, this demonstrates God’s providential care working through human decisions and circumstances.
Detailed Urdu Explanation —
“Then said his sister to Pharaoh’s daughter, Shall I go and call to thee a nurse of the Hebrew women, that she may nurse the child for thee?” — Exodus 2:7
“Then said his sister to Pharaoh’s daughter”
“Shall I go and call to thee a nurse”
“That she may nurse the child for thee”
God
