“And Pharaoh’s daughter said unto her”
The verse begins with Pharaoh’s daughter speaking to the woman who had been brought before her. In the immediate context, this woman was Moses’ mother. The identity of the mother becomes clear from the preceding verses: Moses’ sister had offered to find a Hebrew nurse, and then went and called the child’s mother.
Pharaoh’s daughter did not know that the woman standing before her was the child’s mother, yet she entrusted the baby to her care. This creates one of the most striking details in the story.
“Take this child away, and nurse it for me”
The command was simple: the woman was to take the child and nurse him. In the language of the KJV, “nurse” refers to caring for and feeding the infant.
This meant that Moses’ mother could take her own baby home and provide the care he needed during his early years. The situation that had seemed hopeless had unexpectedly changed.
Moses had been placed in the river because his family feared for his life. Now the very child who had been hidden for protection was being entrusted to his own mother. The narrative presents this as an extraordinary turn of events.
“And I will give thee thy wages”
Pharaoh’s daughter also promised payment for the woman’s work.
This detail adds another remarkable dimension to the story. Moses’ mother was already motivated by love and concern for her child, but Pharaoh’s daughter formally offered compensation for the nursing service. Thus, the mother received an opportunity to care for her own son while also receiving wages.

2. A mother’s love and courage matter
Moses’ mother had already demonstrated extraordinary courage by refusing to abandon her child without taking measures to protect him. Her decision to place him in a carefully prepared basket gave him an opportunity to survive.
Exodus 2:9 then shows her receiving another opportunity to care for him.
3. Provision can come through surprising circumstances
