Amos Chapter
Amos Chapter

Verse-by-Verse Commentary & Explanation

Amos 1:1

Verse: The words of Amos who was among the herdman of Tekoa which he saw concerning Israel in the days of Uzziah king of Judah and in the days of Jeroboam the son of Joash king of Israel two years before the earthquake

English Explanation: This introductory verse establishes the human author, his background, the timing, and the divine authority of the prophecy. Amos was not a professional prophet or a member of the elite; he was a humble shepherd and livestock breeder from Tekoa, a small town in Judah. Despite his southern origin, his prophetic vision was directed toward the northern kingdom of Israel. The historical timeline points to a period of economic prosperity but spiritual decay under King Uzziah of Judah and King Jeroboam II of Israel. The mention of the “earthquake”—a massive historical event later referenced by Zechariah—serves as a literal and symbolic wake-up call from God, validating the urgency of Amos’s message.

Amos 1:2

Verse: And he said The LORD will roar from Zion and utter his voice from Jerusalem and the habitations of the shepherds shall mourn and the top of Carmel shall wither

English Explanation: Amos uses vivid, poetic imagery to depict the terrifying presence of God. The Lord is compared to a roaring lion, a metaphor signaling imminent danger and absolute authority. His voice originates from Zion (Jerusalem), the center of His dwelling place. The impact of this divine roar is devastating and universal, affecting everything from the lowlands where shepherds dwell to the highest peak of Mount Carmel, known for its lush vegetation. When God speaks in judgment, the entire land loses its vitality and withers away.

Amos 1:3

Verse: Thus saith the LORD For three transgressions of Damascus and for four I will not turn away the punishment thereof because they have threshed Gilead with threshing instruments of iron

English Explanation: This verse introduces a recurring formula used throughout the chapters: “For three transgressions… and for four.” This idiomatic expression signifies a complete, overflowing measure of sin that has finally exhausted God’s patience. The first nation addressed is Damascus (Syria). Their specific sin is extreme cruelty in warfare. They treated the people of Gilead (an Israelite territory east of the Jordan) with horrific violence, metaphorically or literally running over them with iron threshing sledges. Because of this merciless brutality, God declares that His judgment is irreversible.

Amos 1:4

Verse: But I will send a fire into the house of Hazael which shall devour the palaces of Benhadad

English Explanation: Fire in biblical prophecy often symbolizes divine judgment, warfare, and total destruction. Hazael and Ben-hadad were prominent kings and dynastic rulers of Syria. God promises to target the very heart of Syrian power—their royal lineages and fortified palaces. The wealth and military strongholds built on the oppression of others will be completely consumed by the fire of divine retribution.

Amos 1:5

Verse: I will break also the bar of Damascus and cut off the inhabitant from the plain of Aven and him that holdeth the sceptre from the house of Eden and the people of Syria shall go into captivity unto Kir saith the LORD

English Explanation: To “break the bar” means to destroy the defensive city gates, leaving Damascus completely vulnerable to enemy invasion. God declares that rulers and citizens alike from the plain of Aven (the valley of wickedness) and the house of Eden (a region of luxury) will be eliminated. The ultimate punishment for Syria is exile. They will be deported back to Kir, the place of their historical origin, signifying a complete undoing of their national status.

Amos 1:6

Verse: Thus saith the LORD For three transgressions of Gaza and for four I will not turn away the punishment thereof because they carried away captive the whole captivity to deliver them up to Edom

English Explanation: The focus shifts to Gaza, representing the nation of Philistia. Their unpardonable sin was slave-trading on a massive scale. They captured entire populations—likely helpless Israelite border communities—and sold them as commercial commodities to Edom, Israel’s bitter enemy. This total lack of human empathy and commercialization of human lives brought down God’s absolute decree of judgment.

Amos 1:7

Verse: But I will send a fire on the wall of Gaza which shall devour the palaces thereof

English Explanation: Similar to the judgment on Damascus, Gaza will experience the consuming fire of war. The very fortifications and walls they trusted for protection, along with the luxury palaces of their leaders, will be brought to utter ruin by foreign invaders directed by the hand of God.

Amos 1:8

Verse: And I will cut off the inhabitant from Ashdod and him that holdeth the sceptre from Ashkelon and I will turn mine hand against Ekron and the remnant of the Philistines shall perish saith the Lord GOD

English Explanation: God promises a systemic eradication of the Philistine pentapolis (the five major allied cities). He names Ashdod, Ashkelon, and Ekron, along with Gaza. Rulers will be stripped of their scepters, and the populations will be decimated. The phrase “the remnant of the Philistines shall perish” indicates total destruction; no survivors will be left to rebuild the nation, showing that God protects the vulnerable from malicious predators.

Amos 1:9

Verse: Thus saith the LORD For three transgressions of Tyrus and for four I will not turn away the punishment thereof because they delivered up the whole captivity to Edom and remembered not the brotherly covenant

English Explanation: Tyre (the Phoenician maritime superpower) is judged next. Like the Philistines, they engaged in human trafficking, selling captives to Edom. However, their guilt is compounded by a betrayal of loyalty: they “remembered not the brotherly covenant.” This refers to historical treaties of friendship and brotherhood, such as the alliance between King David/Solomon of Israel and King Hiram of Tyre. Tyre prioritized commercial greed over sacred treaties and human brotherhood.

Amos 1:10

Verse: But I will send a fire on the wall of Tyrus which shall devour the palaces thereof

English Explanation: Tyre was famously known for its impregnable island fortress and massive sea walls. Yet, God declares that even this economic giant cannot escape divine justice. The defensive walls will be breached, and the wealthy palaces built on blood money and broken covenants will be consumed by fire.

Amos 1:11

Verse: Thus saith the LORD For three transgressions of Edom and for four I will not turn away the punishment thereof because he did pursue his brother with the sword and did cast off all pity and his anger did tear perpetually and he kept his wrath for ever

English Explanation: Edom is judged for deep-seated, ancestral hatred. Historically descended from Esau, the twin brother of Jacob (Israel), Edom shared a close familial bond with Israel. Yet, Edom ruthlessly pursued their “brother” with the sword. They abandoned all natural pity, nursing a perpetual, generational wrath. Instead of showing familial compassion during Israel’s times of distress, Edom exploited and attacked them, keeping their anger burning continuously.

Amos 1:12

Verse: But I will send a fire upon Teman which shall devour the palaces of Bozrah

English Explanation: Teman and Bozrah were key strategic cities and military centers in Edom. Teman was famous for its wisdom, and Bozrah was a highly fortified city. God’s judgment will hit both the intellectual and military strongholds of Edom, ensuring that neither their human wisdom nor their physical fortifications can protect them from destruction.

Amos 1:13

Verse: Thus saith the LORD For three transgressions of the children of Ammon and for four I will not turn away the punishment thereof because they have ripped up the women with child of Gilead that they might enlarge their border

English Explanation: The Ammonites, descendants of Lot, are condemned for their unspeakable, barbaric atrocities driven by territorial greed. In their military campaigns to expand their borders into Gilead, they slaughtered pregnant women. This horrific act aimed to destroy the future generation of their neighbors just to claim more land. God expresses intense outrage against such violations of human rights and basic decency driven by material greed.

Amos 1:14

Verse: But I will kindle a fire in the wall of Rabbah and it shall devour the palaces thereof with shouting in the day of battle with a tempest in the day of the whirlwind

English Explanation: Rabbah was the capital city of the Ammonites. God promises to kindle an unquenchable fire in its walls. The destruction will not be silent; it will come with the terrifying chaos of war—war cries (“shouting”) and the unstoppable momentum of a divine tempest or whirlwind. Their systematic violence against the vulnerable will return upon their own heads with overwhelming force.

Amos 1:15

Verse: And their king shall go into captivity he and his princes together saith the LORD

English Explanation: The climax of the judgment against Ammon is the complete collapse of their leadership. The king and his entire ruling council of princes will be humiliated and carried away into exile. This underscores that no political leader or ruling class can escape accountability when they endorse or engage in systemic cruelty.

Chapter 2

Amos 2:1

Verse: Thus saith the LORD For three transgressions of Moab and for four I will not turn away the punishment thereof because he burned the bones of the king of Edom into lime

English Explanation: Chapter 2 continues the cosmic indictment, turning toward Moab. Moab’s transgression is uniquely abhorrent: they desecrated the corpse of the King of Edom, burning his bones into lime. In the ancient Near East, a proper burial was tied closely to human dignity. Exhuming a dead king’s bones and burning them to ash was an act of ultimate disrespect and post-mortem vengeance. God shows here that His justice defends the basic dignity of all human beings, even dead pagan kings.

Amos 2:2

Verse: But I will send a fire upon Moab and it shall devour the palaces of Kerioth and Moab shall die with tumult with shouting and with the sound of the trumpet

English Explanation: Moab will face the same divine judgment of fire, which will destroy the fortified palaces of Kerioth, a chief city of Moab. Amos describes the fall of Moab with acoustic terror: the “tumult” of a panicked population, the “shouting” of invading soldiers, and the “sound of the trumpet” signaling military defeat. Their pride will end in chaotic devastation.

Amos 2:3

Verse: And I will cut off the judge from the midst thereof and will slay all the princes thereof with him saith the LORD

English Explanation: To conclude the judgment on Moab, God vows to eliminate their top judicial and political leadership. The “judge” (likely referring to the supreme ruler or king) along with all the political princes will be executed. By removing the leaders who permitted and engaged in such moral atrocities, the national infrastructure of Moab will completely disintegrate, satisfying the righteous requirements of God’s law.
