Context of Exodus 2:18
To understand this verse properly, it helps to read the events immediately before it. Moses had fled from Egypt after Pharaoh sought to kill him. He went to the land of Midian and sat beside a well. There he encountered the seven daughters of the priest of Midian, who came to draw water and water their father’s flock.
The shepherds came and drove the women away, but Moses intervened. He helped the daughters and watered their flock. As a result, the women were able to complete their work much more quickly than they normally would. When they returned home, their father Reuel noticed that they had come back unusually early.

“How is it that ye are come so soon to day?”
In modern English, the meaning is essentially:

1. “And when they came to Reuel their father”
The word “they” refers to the daughters of Reuel. Earlier in the chapter, the text says that the priest of Midian had seven daughters. They came to the well to draw water and fill the troughs for their father’s flock.
Their return to their father’s household is important because Reuel immediately noticed something unusual. Their arrival happened much earlier than he expected.
The name Reuel identifies their father in this passage. Later biblical passages also associate this family with the name Jethro, particularly in the continuing account of Moses’ life in Midian. The KJV passage itself identifies Reuel as the father of the daughters.
2. “He said”
Reuel did not simply observe their early arrival silently. He asked them about it.
This small question gives us an interesting picture of ordinary family life. A father knew the normal routine of his daughters. He apparently knew approximately when they would ordinarily return after taking care of the flock.
Because they came home much earlier than expected, he naturally wanted to know what had happened.

3. “How is it that ye are come so soon”
The older expression “How is it that ye are come” means something like:
“Why have you come?”

The KJV spelling “to day” represents the older form of the word “today.”

The reason becomes clear in the following verse.
They explained that an Egyptian man had delivered them from the shepherds and had also drawn enough water for them and watered the flock. The Egyptian was Moses, who had fled Egypt and was living as a stranger in Midian.
What Does Exodus 2:18 Teach?

Moses had not yet become the great leader described later in Exodus. At this point, he was living in Midian after leaving Egypt.

اس آیت میں موسیٰ کے مدیان میں پہنچنے کے بعد پیش آنے والے ایک واقعے کا ذکر ہے۔ مدیان کے کاہن کی سات بیٹیاں تھیں۔ وہ اپنے باپ کے ریوڑ کو پانی پلانے کے لیے کنویں پر آئیں۔ جب وہ پانی پلانے کی کوشش کر رہی تھیں تو کچھ چرواہوں نے انہیں وہاں سے ہٹانے کی کوشش کی۔
موسیٰ نے یہ صورتِ حال دیکھی تو ان کی مدد کی۔ اس نے ان کے لیے پانی نکالا اور ریوڑ کو پانی پلانے میں مدد کی۔ اس وجہ سے وہ اپنے معمول کے مقابلے میں بہت جلد گھر واپس پہنچ گئیں۔
