Detailed Explanation in English

1. “And his brethren said to him”

The verse begins with Joseph’s brothers responding directly to him. Joseph had already told them about his dreams, and they clearly understood the message they believed the dreams were communicating.

Their response was not one of curiosity or encouragement. Instead, their words reveal that they were deeply troubled by the possibility that Joseph might someday have authority over them.

The brothers were older than Joseph, and from their perspective, the idea that their younger brother could someday rule over them seemed unacceptable. Their family relationships were already strained because their father, Jacob, had shown special affection toward Joseph.

Therefore, Joseph’s dreams intensified an existing family conflict.

2. “Shalt thou indeed reign over us?”

The first question expresses disbelief and resentment.

The brothers essentially asked Joseph whether he really thought he would rule over them. Their question was not simply an innocent request for clarification. The context shows that they were offended by the idea.

Joseph was younger than many of his brothers, so the thought of him becoming their ruler challenged their expectations about family position and authority.

This teaches an important lesson about human nature. People may sometimes become uncomfortable when another person’s future appears greater than their own expectations. Instead of rejoicing in another person’s possible success, jealousy can cause them to feel threatened.

The brothers were not necessarily angry because Joseph had done something wrong in this particular moment. Their reaction was strongly connected to how they felt about Joseph and the special position he appeared to have in their father’s household.

3. “Or shalt thou indeed have dominion over us?”

The second question repeats and strengthens the first.

The brothers were asking whether Joseph would actually exercise authority over them. The repetition emphasizes how strongly they rejected the possibility.

The word “dominion” refers to authority or rule. Joseph’s dream therefore appeared to indicate a future in which his brothers would be placed beneath him in some sense.

From the perspective of the brothers, this was difficult to accept. Their pride and jealousy prevented them from receiving the dream peacefully.

The passage also demonstrates how people can react negatively to information that challenges their expectations. Instead of considering whether the dream could have a divine purpose, the brothers focused on how the message affected their own position.

4. “And they hated him yet the more”

This is one of the most serious statements in the verse.

The brothers already disliked Joseph, but his dreams caused their hatred to increase. The phrase “yet the more” shows that their negative feelings were becoming stronger.

Jealousy can begin with comparison. A person sees someone receiving attention, opportunities, possessions, praise, or recognition and begins to feel dissatisfied. If those feelings are not controlled, they can grow into resentment and eventually hatred.

The story of Joseph demonstrates how dangerous unchecked jealousy can become.

Earlier in the chapter, Joseph’s brothers had already been described as having difficulty speaking peacefully with him. Their growing hatred eventually contributed to the terrible decision they would make against Joseph.

Genesis 37:8 therefore provides an important warning: emotions that appear small at first can become destructive when they are repeatedly entertained.

5. “For his dreams”

The brothers hated Joseph because of his dreams.

The dreams were significant because they suggested that Joseph’s future would be very different from what his brothers expected. Later events in Genesis show that Joseph’s dreams were connected with God’s larger purpose for his life.

At this point, however, the brothers could not see the complete picture.

This is an important spiritual lesson. Human beings often see only a small part of God’s plan. A situation that looks confusing or threatening at one moment may have a different meaning when viewed from the perspective of the future.

Joseph himself would experience many difficult circumstances before the meaning of his dreams became clearer.

6. “And for his words”

The brothers also hated Joseph because of his words.

This reminds us that communication matters. Joseph’s dreams were not kept private; he shared them with his family. His brothers interpreted his words as evidence that he believed he would one day have authority over them.

The passage does not mean that every word Joseph spoke was necessarily wrong. Instead, it shows how his brothers reacted to what he said.

This part of the verse also demonstrates how quickly family communication can become complicated when jealousy is already present. When people are already angry or suspicious, they may interpret another person’s words in the most negative way.

7. The spiritual lesson of Genesis 37:8

Genesis 37:8 teaches several important lessons.

First, jealousy can destroy relationships. Joseph’s brothers allowed their jealousy to grow instead of dealing with it honestly.

Second, God’s purpose does not depend on everyone’s approval. Joseph’s brothers rejected the idea of his future authority, but their rejection could not prevent God’s plan.

Third, we should be careful about comparing ourselves with others. Comparison can produce resentment when we focus more on another person’s blessings than on our own responsibilities.

Fourth, difficult beginnings do not mean that God has abandoned someone. Joseph’s journey would include betrayal, separation, and hardship, but God remained faithful throughout his story.

Finally, this verse encourages readers to examine their own hearts. When another person receives praise, success, or an opportunity, our response can reveal whether we are walking in humility or allowing jealousy to control us.

“And his brethren said to him, Shalt thou indeed reign over us? or shalt thou indeed have dominion over us? And they hated him yet the more for his dreams, and for his words.”
