Nahum Chapter

Chapter 1

Nahum 1:5

Verse: The mountains quake at him and the hills melt and the earth is burned at his presence yea the world and all that dwell therein

English Explanation

This verse highlights the absolute, terrifying sovereignty of God over physical creation. The prophet uses cataclysmic imagery—shaking mountains and melting hills—to illustrate that if the most stable structures of the earth cannot stand before God’s presence, no human empire (like Assyria) can hope to resist Him. It emphasizes His role as the ultimate Judge of the world.

Nahum 1:6

Verse: Who can stand before his indignation? and who can abide in the fierceness of his anger? his fury is poured out like fire and the rocks are thrown down by him

English Explanation

Nahum asks rhetorical questions to emphasize human helplessness against divine wrath. God’s anger is compared to an all-consuming fire capable of shattering rocks. This serves as a direct warning to Nineveh that their massive stone walls and military defenses will mean nothing when God executes His judgment.

Nahum 1:7

Verse: The LORD is good a strong hold in the day of trouble and he knoweth them that trust in him

English Explanation

In the middle of describing terrifying judgment, Nahum provides comfort for the faithful. This verse highlights the dual nature of God’s character: He is a fierce judge to His enemies, but a loving refuge and protector to those who trust and remain loyal to Him during times of distress.

Nahum 1:8

Verse: But with an overrunning flood he will make an utter end of the place thereof and darkness shall pursue his enemies

English Explanation

In contrast to the protection offered to the righteous, God’s enemies will face complete destruction. The “overrunning flood” serves as both a metaphor for an overwhelming military invasion and a literal prophecy, as historical accounts suggest the flooding of the Tigris River played a role in breaching Nineveh’s walls.

Nahum 1:9

Verse: What do ye imagine against the LORD? he will make an utter end affliction shall not rise up the second time

English Explanation

The prophet challenges those who plot or conspire against God. He declares that the judgment coming upon Nineveh will be so absolute and final that the Assyrian empire will never rise again to afflict or oppress God’s people. There will be no need for a second strike.

Nahum 1:10

Verse: For while they be folden together as thorns and while they are drunken as drunkards they shall be devoured as stubble fully dry

English Explanation

This verse uses metaphors to show the vulnerability of the Assyrians. Though they think they are tangled together tightly like impenetrable thorns, and though they celebrate in drunken security, they will be as easily and quickly consumed by judgment as completely dry straw caught in a fire.

Nahum 1:11

Verse: There is one come out of thee that imagineth evil against the LORD a wicked counseller

English Explanation

This points toward a specific historical leader from Assyria (often identified as Sennacherib) who openly plotted against God and threatened Jerusalem. This individual acted as a “wicked counselor,” arrogant enough to believe he could defy the Almighty.

Nahum 1:12

Verse: Thus saith the LORD Though they be quiet and likewise many yet thus shall they be cut down when he shall pass through Though I have afflicted thee I will afflict thee no more

English Explanation

God promises Judah that despite the massive, undisturbed numbers of the Assyrian army, they will be mowed down when His judgment passes through. God acknowledges that He used Assyria to discipline Judah, but promises that this specific season of affliction is ending.

Nahum 1:13

Verse: For now will I break his yoke from off thee and will burst thy bonds in sunder

English Explanation

Here, God promises absolute liberation for His people. The “yoke” and “bonds” represent the heavy political oppression, financial taxes, and fear that the Assyrian empire imposed on Judah. God steps in to snap these chains completely.

Nahum 1:14

Verse: And the LORD hath given a commandment concerning thee that no more of thy name be sown out of the house of thy gods will I cut off the graven image and the molten image I will make thy grave for thou art vile

English Explanation

This verse is directed specifically at the King of Assyria and Nineveh. God decrees that their royal lineage will end (“no more of thy name be sown”) and their idols will be destroyed in their own temples. Nineveh is pronounced “vile” (morally corrupt), and God Himself prepares its grave.

Nahum 1:15

Verse: Behold upon the mountains the feet of him that bringeth good tidings that publisheth peace O Judah keep thy solemn feasts perform thy vows for the wicked shall no more pass through thee he is utterly cut off

English Explanation

With Nineveh’s doom sealed, messengers run across the mountains to bring the peaceful news of freedom to Judah. Judah is encouraged to return to their religious celebrations and fulfill their vows to God joyfully, because their terrifying oppressor has been completely destroyed.

Chapter 2

Nahum 2:1

Verse: He that dasheth in pieces is come up before thy face keep the munition watch the way make thy loins strong fortify thy power mightily

English Explanation

Nahum uses sarcasm to warn Nineveh of its approaching destroyer (the Medes and Babylonians). He tells them to guard their fortresses and prepare for battle, but the underlying message is that no matter how hard they prepare or strengthen themselves, their defense is useless against the judgment of God.

Nahum 2:2

Verse: For the LORD hath turned away the excellency of Jacob as the excellency of Israel for the emptiers have emptied them out and marred their vine branches

English Explanation

This verse explains the reason behind Nineveh’s destruction. The Assyrians had completely plundered and devastated Israel and Judah (compared here to a ruined vineyard). God is now stepping in to restore the dignity and glory of His people by punishing the ones who destroyed them.

Nahum 2:3

Verse: The shield of his mighty men is made red the valiant men are in scarlet the chariots shall be with flaming torches in the day of his preparation and the fir trees shall be terribly shaken

English Explanation

A vivid description of the invading army attacking Nineveh. The shields and uniforms are stained red or made of bronze/scarlet, and the metal fittings on the chariots flash like torches in the sunlight. The absolute chaos and power of the march shake even the wooden spears (fir trees).

Nahum 2:4

Verse: The chariots shall rage in the streets they shall justle one against another in the broad ways they shall seem like torches they shall run like the lightnings

English Explanation

The prophet describes the terrifying scene inside the city or just outside its walls. The invading chariots race through the streets with incredible speed and violence, crashing into one another in the wide plazas, moving as fast and unpredictably as flashes of lightning.

Nahum 2:5

Verse: He shall recount his worthies they shall stumble in their walk they shall make haste to the wall thereof and the defence shall be prepared

English Explanation

The Assyrian king frantically summons his elite officers (“worthies”) to defend the city. However, they are in such a state of panic and confusion that they stumble as they run toward the walls to set up defensive shields, realizing they are already too late.

Nahum 2:6

Verse: The gates of the rivers shall be opened and the palace shall be dissolved

English Explanation

This is a remarkable literal prophecy. Nineveh relied on the Khosr and Tigris rivers for defense. The “gates of the rivers” refer to the sluice gates controlling the water. Enemies breached these gates, causing a massive flood that physically collapsed and dissolved the foundations of the royal palace.

Nahum 2:7

Verse: And Huzzab shall be led away captive she shall be brought up and her maids shall lead her as with the voice of doves tabering upon their breasts

English Explanation

“Huzzab” likely refers either to the queen of Nineveh or a symbolic representation of the city itself. She is stripped of her honor and led into captivity, while her maidservants follow her mourning, making soft sad sounds like doves and beating their breasts in deep sorrow.

Nahum 2:8

Verse: But Nineveh is of old like a pool of water yet they shall flee away Stand stand shall they cry but none shall look back

English Explanation

Nineveh was once stable, wealthy, and crowded with people, much like a peaceful, filled pool of water. But as the attack happens, that water leaks away—meaning its citizens flee in absolute panic. Even when leaders shout “Stand, stand!” to get them to fight, no one turns back.

Nahum 2:9

Verse: Take ye the spoil of silver take the spoil of gold for there is none end of the store and glory out of all the pleasant furniture

Explanation

The victorious invaders are invited to plunder the unimaginable wealth of Nineveh. Because Assyria had spent centuries robbing other nations, its city was packed with endless silver, gold, and luxurious furniture. Now, all that stolen wealth is stripped away in a single day.

Nahum 2:10

Verse: She is empty and void and waste and the heart melteth and the knees smite together and much pain is in all loins and the faces of them all gather blackness

English Explanation

This verse uses powerful language to describe total devastation. Nineveh is left completely desolate and empty. The remaining inhabitants are paralyzed with pure terror—their hearts melt, their knees shake with fear, and their faces turn pale or dark with despair.

Nahum 2:11

Verse: Where is the dwelling of the lions and the feedingplace of the young lions where the lion even the old lion walked and the lion’s whelp and none made them afraid

English Explanation

The prophet asks a mocking rhetorical question. Assyria used the lion as its national symbol of strength and fierce cruelty. Nahum asks, “Where is that fierce lion’s den now?” The place where they once lived safely, terrified other nations, and raised their young is now completely wiped out.

Nahum 2:12

Verse: The lion did tear in pieces enough for his whelps and strangled for his lionesses and filled his holes with prey and his dens with ravin

English Explanation

Continuing the lion metaphor, Nahum describes how Assyria grew rich. Like a predator hunting for its pride, Assyria brutally tore apart other nations to bring back wealth and slaves to fill its capital city. They built their empire entirely on violent conquest and robbery.

Nahum 2:13

Verse: Behold I am against thee saith the LORD of hosts and I will burn her chariots in the smoke and the sword shall devour thy young lions and I will cut off thy prey from the earth and the voice of thy messengers shall no more be heard

English Explanation

This is the ultimate reason for Nineveh’s fall: God Himself declares, “I am against thee.” The Lord of Hosts promises to burn their military power, destroy their young fighters, stop their pattern of looting other nations, and silence their arrogant messengers who once threatened the world.
