1. Reuben Heard What His Brothers Were Planning
The passage begins with the words, “And Reuben heard it.” Reuben was the eldest son of Jacob. His brothers were preparing to kill Joseph because of their hatred and jealousy toward him.
Joseph had already become a source of conflict in the family. Jacob had shown Joseph special affection, and Joseph had also shared dreams that suggested his family would one day bow before him. His brothers interpreted these things as reasons to resent him.
When Reuben discovered that the brothers were considering killing Joseph, he took action. His response shows that he recognized the seriousness of what they were planning.
2. Reuben Tried to Deliver Joseph
The verse says that Reuben “delivered him out of their hands.” This means Reuben attempted to protect Joseph from the immediate threat posed by his brothers.
Reuben’s words were direct: “Let us not kill him.” He understood that taking Joseph’s life would be a terrible act. Instead of allowing the situation to end in murder, Reuben searched for another solution.
This is an important lesson about standing against wrongdoing. Even though Reuben did not completely solve the situation immediately, he opposed the most violent part of his brothers’ plan.
3. “Shed No Blood”
Reuben specifically told his brothers, “Shed no blood.” This statement emphasizes the seriousness of the danger Joseph faced.
The brothers were angry, but anger and jealousy had brought them to the point where they were considering killing their own brother. Reuben’s words attempted to stop that progression.
The passage reminds readers that uncontrolled jealousy can lead people toward destructive decisions. What begins as resentment can become hatred, and hatred can lead to actions that cause lasting damage.
4. Joseph Was Cast into a Pit
Reuben suggested that Joseph should be placed in a pit in the wilderness. A pit could be a dry cistern or depression in the ground. The brothers could leave Joseph there without immediately taking his life.
However, Reuben’s intention was different from that of his brothers. The verse explains that Reuben wanted to “deliver him to his father again.”
This detail is significant. Reuben was not simply looking for a different way to harm Joseph. His plan was ultimately to rescue him and return him to Jacob.
5. Reuben Wanted to Protect Joseph
Genesis 37:22 gives us insight into Reuben’s intention: “that he might rid him out of their hands, to deliver him to his father again.”
Reuben understood that Joseph needed to be separated from the angry brothers. He wanted to remove Joseph from immediate danger and later take him back to their father.
This shows that even within a deeply troubled family situation, there was someone who attempted to prevent the worst outcome.
6. Human Plans Cannot Stop God’s Purpose
Joseph’s brothers believed they were determining his future. They intended to remove him from their family and were acting out of jealousy.
Yet the larger story of Genesis shows that their actions did not destroy God’s purpose for Joseph.
Joseph would eventually experience slavery, imprisonment, and great hardship, but God would use these circumstances in a much greater story. Joseph would rise to an important position in Egypt and later be able to help preserve his family during a severe famine.
Genesis 37:21–22 therefore sits at the beginning of a remarkable story of God’s providence. Joseph could not see what was ahead, and his brothers could not understand the consequences of their actions. But God was not absent from the situation.

There are situations in life when doing what is right requires speaking up. Reuben’s example shows the importance of recognizing wrongdoing and attempting to protect someone who is in danger.
9. God’s Providence in Difficult Circumstances
Joseph’s story demonstrates that difficult circumstances do not necessarily mean that God’s purpose has failed.
At this moment, Joseph was separated from his brothers, placed into a pit, and faced an uncertain future. From a human perspective, his situation looked extremely dark.
But the later chapters of Genesis reveal that these events became part of a much larger purpose.
This does not mean that the wrongdoing of Joseph’s brothers was good. Their jealousy and actions were wrong. Rather, the story demonstrates that God can work through circumstances that human beings intend for harmful purposes.

1. روبن نے اپنے بھائیوں کی بات سنی
