Exodus 4:6 records the second miraculous sign that the LORD gave to Moses when Moses was being called to lead the Israelites out of Egypt. Moses had expressed uncertainty about whether the people would believe that God had truly appeared to him and given him a mission. Therefore, God gave Moses miraculous signs that would demonstrate His divine authority.
In the previous verses, God had shown Moses that his ordinary shepherd’s rod could become a serpent and then return to a rod. In this verse, God gives Moses another sign involving his own hand.
The LORD says to Moses, “Put now thine hand into thy bosom.” Moses obeys immediately. When he removes his hand, he sees that it has become “leprous as snow.” The expression describes a visible and extraordinary change in the appearance of his hand. The whiteness made the condition immediately recognizable.
This miracle was not presented as a punishment for Moses. Rather, it was a sign demonstrating God’s supernatural power. Moses was being prepared for his mission before Pharaoh and before the people of Israel. The miracle would help establish that Moses had truly received a message and commission from God.
God’s Power Over What Appears Ordinary
Moses’ hand was an ordinary part of his body, but God used it as the instrument of a miraculous sign. This teaches an important biblical principle: God can use ordinary things and ordinary people to accomplish His purposes.
Moses himself did not initially feel qualified for the task ahead. He had questions about whether the Israelites would believe him and whether he could successfully carry out God’s command. Yet God demonstrated that the success of the mission would ultimately depend upon God’s power rather than Moses’ natural abilities.
The transformation of Moses’ hand therefore served as a powerful confirmation. The same God who could change the condition of Moses’ hand could also accomplish the greater work of delivering Israel from Egypt.
“Leprous as Snow”
The phrase “leprous as snow” emphasizes the dramatic appearance of Moses’ hand. Snow is associated with whiteness, so the comparison communicates that the change was obvious.
The passage should not be interpreted as saying that every person who suffers from a skin disease is under God’s judgment. In this particular event, the condition was miraculously produced as a sign and was immediately connected with God’s demonstration of power.
This distinction is important when studying Scripture. Biblical passages involving illness or physical conditions should be understood according to their specific context rather than used to make general judgments about people who experience illness.
Moses Obeyed God
Another important detail is Moses’ obedience. God told him to put his hand into his bosom, and Moses did it. God then told him to take it out, and he did so.
The verse presents a simple sequence:
- God gave the command.
- Moses obeyed.
- A supernatural transformation occurred.
- Moses witnessed God’s power.
This pattern appears repeatedly throughout Scripture. Faith is demonstrated not merely by hearing God’s instructions but also by responding to them.
A Sign for Moses and Israel
The miracle was especially important because Moses was about to return to Egypt after many years away. He would need to communicate to the Israelites that the God of their ancestors had appeared to him.
God therefore provided Moses with signs that would support his message. The miracles were not merely spectacular events. They had a purpose: they authenticated the divine mission given to Moses.
The following verses continue this demonstration. God tells Moses to put his hand back into his bosom, and when he takes it out again, it is restored. God then provides another possible sign involving water becoming blood.
The sequence shows that the LORD had complete authority both to transform and to restore.

Exodus 4:6 can remind believers that God’s power is greater than human limitations. Moses saw his own weakness, but God demonstrated His strength.
The verse also teaches that God’s calling may sometimes be accompanied by circumstances that require faith and obedience. Moses did not have every detail of the future explained to him. Instead, he received God’s command and witnessed enough of God’s power to move forward.
The miracle of the hand also demonstrates that God was not asking Moses to rely solely upon his own confidence. God Himself would provide the evidence, authority, and power necessary for the mission.

خروج 4:6 — موسیٰ کا ہاتھ برف کی مانند سفید ہو گیا
خروج 4:6 میں موسیٰ کے ہاتھ کے ایک حیرت انگیز معجزے کا ذکر ملتا ہے۔ اس وقت خدا موسیٰ کو ایک بہت اہم ذمہ داری کے لیے تیار کر رہا تھا۔ موسیٰ کو مصر واپس جانا تھا اور بنی اسرائیل کو غلامی سے نکالنے کے لیے خدا کے پیغام کو فرعون اور بنی اسرائیل تک پہنچانا تھا۔
خدا نے موسیٰ کو مختلف نشانیاں دیں تاکہ موسیٰ خود بھی خدا کی قدرت کو دیکھ سکے اور بنی اسرائیل کے سامنے یہ ظاہر کر سکے کہ واقعی خدا نے اسے بھیجا ہے۔
اس آیت میں خدا موسیٰ سے کہتا ہے:
“اپنا ہاتھ اپنی چھاتی میں ڈال۔”
موسیٰ نے خدا کے حکم کی تعمیل کی۔ جب اس نے اپنا ہاتھ باہر نکالا تو اس نے دیکھا کہ اس کا ہاتھ برف کی مانند کوڑھی ہو گیا تھا۔
یہ ایک غیر معمولی معجزہ تھا۔ موسیٰ کا ہاتھ پہلے عام حالت میں تھا، لیکن خدا کے حکم کے مطابق ہاتھ اندر رکھنے اور باہر نکالنے کے بعد اس کی حالت اچانک تبدیل ہو گئی۔
اس معجزے کا مقصد کیا تھا؟
یہ معجزہ موسیٰ کو سزا دینے کے لیے نہیں تھا۔ اس کا بنیادی مقصد خدا کی قدرت کا نشان ظاہر کرنا تھا۔
موسیٰ کو خدشہ تھا کہ بنی اسرائیل اس کی بات پر یقین نہیں کریں گے۔ اس لیے خدا نے اسے ایسی نشانیاں عطا کیں جن کے ذریعے وہ لوگوں کو دکھا سکتا تھا کہ اسے واقعی خدا کی طرف سے پیغام ملا ہے۔
پہلی نشانی عصا کے بارے میں تھی، جو سانپ بن گیا اور پھر دوبارہ عصا بن گیا۔ دوسری نشانی موسیٰ کے ہاتھ کے بارے میں تھی۔
ان دونوں نشانیوں کے ذریعے خدا موسیٰ کو یقین دلا رہا تھا کہ وہ اس کے ساتھ ہے۔
“برف کی مانند” کا مطلب
آیت میں ہاتھ کے لیے “برف کی مانند” کا لفظ استعمال کیا گیا ہے۔ اس سے اس غیر معمولی سفیدی اور واضح تبدیلی کی طرف اشارہ ہوتا ہے جو موسیٰ کے ہاتھ میں ظاہر ہوئی۔
یہ بات بھی اہم ہے کہ اس واقعہ کو عام بیماریوں کے بارے میں فیصلہ کرنے کے لیے استعمال نہیں کرنا چاہیے۔ اس خاص واقعے میں یہ ایک معجزاتی نشانی تھی جو خدا نے موسیٰ کو دکھائی تھی۔
بائبل میں کسی شخص کی جسمانی بیماری کو خود بخود اس کے گناہ یا خدا کی ناراضی کا ثبوت سمجھنا درست نہیں۔ اس آیت کا اصل موضوع خدا کی قدرت اور موسیٰ کی رسالت کے لیے دی گئی نشانی ہے۔
موسیٰ کی فرمانبرداری
اس آیت میں موسیٰ کی فرمانبرداری بھی نمایاں ہے۔ خدا نے اسے اپنا ہاتھ چھاتی میں رکھنے کا حکم دیا، اور موسیٰ نے ایسا ہی کیا۔
یہ ایک سادہ مگر اہم سبق ہے: خدا کے حکم کو سننا اور اس پر عمل کرنا ایمان کے عملی اظہار کا حصہ ہے۔
موسیٰ کے سامنے مستقبل کے تمام حالات واضح نہیں تھے۔ اسے یہ معلوم نہیں تھا کہ مصر میں ہر مرحلہ کس طرح مکمل ہوگا، لیکن خدا اسے قدم بہ قدم رہنمائی دے رہا تھا۔
خدا بدلنے اور بحال کرنے پر قادر ہے
اس واقعے کا ایک اہم پہلو یہ بھی ہے کہ خدا صرف تبدیلی لانے پر ہی قادر نہیں تھا بلکہ اگلی آیت میں موسیٰ کے ہاتھ کو دوبارہ درست حالت میں لانے کی قدرت بھی ظاہر کرتا ہے۔
اس سے خدا کی مکمل قدرت ظاہر ہوتی ہے۔ جو چیز انسان کے اختیار سے باہر ہو، وہ خدا کے اختیار سے باہر نہیں۔
موسیٰ کے ہاتھ کا یہ معجزہ اس بات کی علامت تھا کہ جس خدا نے ہاتھ کی حالت بدل دی، وہ بنی اسرائیل کی حالت بھی بدل سکتا ہے۔ بنی اسرائیل مصر میں غلامی کا سامنا کر رہے تھے، لیکن خدا ان کی رہائی کے لیے کام کر رہا تھا۔
آج کے لیے روحانی سبق
خروج 4:6 ہمیں یاد دلاتی ہے کہ خدا کی قدرت انسانی کمزوری سے کہیں زیادہ ہے۔ موسیٰ اپنے بارے میں بہت سے سوالات رکھتا تھا، لیکن خدا نے اسے اپنی قدرت کی نشانیاں دکھائیں۔
یہ آیت ہمیں یہ بھی سکھاتی ہے کہ خدا کبھی کبھی انسان کو اس کی اپنی کمزوری کے باوجود ایک ذمہ داری دیتا ہے۔ ایسی صورتحال میں انسان کو صرف اپنی طاقت پر بھروسہ نہیں کرنا چاہیے بلکہ خدا کی رہنمائی اور قدرت پر اعتماد کرنا چاہیے۔
موسیٰ کا ہاتھ ایک لمحے میں تبدیل ہوا، اور یہ تبدیلی موسیٰ کے لیے ایک واضح نشان تھی۔ اس معجزے کا مقصد لوگوں کو خوفزدہ کرنا نہیں بلکہ انہیں یہ دکھانا تھا کہ خدا اپنے منصوبے کو پورا کرنے کے لیے غیر معمولی قدرت رکھتا ہے۔
