Genesis 39:21–23 presents one of the most encouraging moments in the story of Joseph. Joseph had been falsely accused by Potiphar’s wife and had been placed in prison. From a human perspective, his circumstances seemed to be getting worse. He had already been separated from his family, sold into slavery, and taken to Egypt. After serving faithfully in Potiphar’s house, he was imprisoned because of a false accusation.
Yet the most important statement in these verses is repeated clearly: “the LORD was with Joseph.”
Joseph’s circumstances had changed, but God’s presence with him had not changed.
1. God Was With Joseph in Prison
Genesis 39:21 begins by saying, “But the LORD was with Joseph.”
The word “But” is important because it introduces a contrast. Joseph was in prison, but God was with him. Joseph had lost his freedom, but he had not lost God’s presence. He had been treated unjustly, but God had not abandoned him.
This teaches an important spiritual principle: difficult circumstances do not necessarily mean that God has left a person.
Joseph’s life demonstrates that God’s presence is not limited to comfortable places. God was with Joseph when he was serving in Potiphar’s house, and God was also with him when he was inside the prison.
Believers can therefore remember that faithfulness does not always immediately produce easy circumstances. Sometimes a person may do what is right and still experience hardship. Joseph’s experience shows that God can continue working even when the situation appears completely unfavorable.
2. God Showed Joseph Mercy
The verse continues:
“and shewed him mercy.”
Joseph needed mercy because he was in a difficult and unjust situation. The prison could have been a place where his situation became completely hopeless. Instead, God showed him mercy.
The mercy of God did not necessarily mean that Joseph was immediately released from prison. Rather, God worked within Joseph’s circumstances and gave him help, favor, responsibility, and opportunities.
This is an important lesson. Sometimes God’s mercy appears through a change in circumstances, but at other times it appears through strength and grace to endure the circumstances.
Joseph was still in prison, but his situation within the prison began to change.
3. Joseph Found Favor With the Prison Keeper
The verse says that God “gave him favour in the sight of the keeper of the prison.”
Joseph’s character and conduct became noticeable even in prison.
This is significant because Joseph did not allow imprisonment to destroy his faithfulness. He continued to conduct himself responsibly. As a result, the prison keeper recognized something trustworthy in him.
Joseph had previously been entrusted with responsibility in Potiphar’s household. Now he was again receiving responsibility in prison.
This shows a consistent pattern in Joseph’s life: wherever he was placed, he served faithfully.
The lesson is not that every faithful person will immediately receive authority or success. Rather, Joseph’s example shows the value of maintaining integrity and responsibility even when circumstances are difficult.
4. The Prison Keeper Trusted Joseph
Genesis 39:22 says:
“And the keeper of the prison committed to Joseph’s hand all the prisoners that were in the prison.”
The prison keeper trusted Joseph with significant responsibility.
This is remarkable because Joseph was himself a prisoner. Yet he became responsible for other prisoners.
The keeper trusted him because Joseph had demonstrated reliability. His circumstances did not prevent him from displaying good character.
The verse also says:
“and whatsoever they did there, he was the doer of it.”
Joseph became the person carrying out many of the responsibilities within the prison.
This teaches that a difficult position does not make faithful work meaningless. Joseph could have complained constantly about his injustice, but instead he continued serving responsibly.
