English Explanation

Exodus 4:27–28 describes an important moment in the calling of Moses. After Moses had encountered God at the burning bush and received the command to return to Egypt, God arranged for Aaron, Moses’ brother, to meet him. This meeting was significant because Aaron would become Moses’ spokesman and helper before Pharaoh and the people of Israel.

In verse 27, the LORD tells Aaron to go into the wilderness to meet Moses. This shows that God was directing not only Moses but also Aaron. Earlier in the chapter, Moses had expressed concern about his ability to speak before Pharaoh and the Israelites. God had therefore appointed Aaron to assist him. Aaron was able to speak on Moses’ behalf, while Moses would communicate the message God had given him.

The instruction for Aaron to meet Moses in the wilderness also demonstrates that God was bringing the two brothers together at the right time. Moses had been living in Midian for many years, but now he was returning to Egypt. Aaron was already in Egypt, where he had been living among the Israelites. Their meeting was therefore an important step in beginning the mission God had given them.

The verse says that Aaron met Moses “in the mount of God.” This expression connects the meeting with the sacred location where Moses had previously encountered God. Moses had seen the burning bush at Mount Horeb, and God had spoken to him there. Now Aaron comes to meet Moses at this same significant place.

Aaron then “kissed him.” In the cultural setting of the biblical world, greeting someone with a kiss could express family affection, welcome, respect, reconciliation, and joy. Moses and Aaron were brothers, and their meeting after a long separation was an emotional family reunion. The simple statement about their greeting highlights the human side of the story. God’s work was being carried forward through a family relationship.

Verse 28 explains what happened next. Moses told Aaron “all the words of the LORD who had sent him.” Moses did not keep the message to himself. He communicated to Aaron what God had commanded. This included the purpose of Moses’ return to Egypt and the instructions concerning Israel’s deliverance.

Moses also told Aaron “all the signs” that God had commanded him. Earlier in Exodus 4, God had given Moses miraculous signs to demonstrate that he had truly been sent by God. These included Moses’ staff becoming a serpent, his hand becoming affected and then restored, and the water from the Nile being associated with a sign. These signs were intended to confirm God’s message.

This passage therefore emphasizes obedience, communication, partnership, and divine calling.

One important lesson is that God did not require Moses to accomplish the mission entirely by himself. Moses had weaknesses and concerns about speaking, but God provided Aaron as a companion and spokesman. This demonstrates that a person’s limitations do not necessarily prevent God from accomplishing His purposes.

The passage also shows the importance of accurately communicating God’s message. Moses told Aaron the words and signs that God had given him. The mission was not based on Moses’ personal ideas. He was carrying a message that came from God.

Aaron’s role was also important. Although Moses was the central leader chosen to confront Pharaoh, Aaron became an essential partner in the mission. Their relationship demonstrates how God can use different people with different abilities in the same work.

Exodus 4:27–28 also prepares the reader for the events that follow. Moses and Aaron would soon appear before the elders of Israel and then before Pharaoh. Before they could begin publicly proclaiming God’s message, they first had to meet, communicate, and prepare themselves for the task ahead.

The meeting in the wilderness therefore represents more than a family reunion. It marks the beginning of a united mission. Moses had received the divine commission, and Aaron was now brought into that commission. Together they would communicate God’s command concerning the Israelites.

For believers, this passage can encourage trust in God’s guidance. Moses was not given every part of the journey at once. He received instructions step by step. Aaron was also directed where to go. The passage illustrates how God can bring people together for a purpose and provide help where it is needed.

Another lesson is that spiritual work requires faithful communication. Moses told Aaron everything God had said and showed him the signs. He did not alter the message or replace it with his own ideas. This highlights the importance of faithfully communicating what God has revealed.

The passage also reminds readers that God’s calling can involve both individual responsibility and cooperation. Moses had his particular role, while Aaron had his. Neither role was identical, but both contributed to the larger mission.

Ultimately, Exodus 4:27–28 introduces the partnership that would play a major role in the Exodus story. Moses would lead, Aaron would speak alongside him, and both would serve according to the instructions they had received from God.
