“If Ye Know That He Is Righteous”

John begins with the statement, “If ye know that he is righteous.” The “he” refers to Jesus Christ in the context of the preceding verses.

To know that Christ is righteous means recognizing His holy and perfect character. Jesus is not merely a teacher who gave moral instructions. He is presented in Scripture as completely righteous and as the One whom believers are called to follow.

The righteousness of Christ provides the standard for Christian living. Human standards can change, and people may disagree about what is right or wrong, but God’s character provides an unchanging foundation for righteousness.

Knowing that Christ is righteous should therefore affect the way a believer lives. Biblical knowledge is not intended to remain merely intellectual. Genuine faith produces a response in everyday life.

“Ye Know That Every One That Doeth Righteousness”

John then gives a practical principle: “every one that doeth righteousness.”

The phrase emphasizes action. Righteousness is not only something a person claims to believe; it becomes visible through conduct.

A Christian may profess faith, attend worship, study Scripture, or speak about God, but Scripture also calls believers to demonstrate their faith through the way they live.

Doing righteousness can include:

  • Choosing honesty instead of deception
  • Showing kindness toward others
  • Forgiving people
  • Practicing justice and fairness
  • Resisting sinful behavior
  • Helping those who are in need
  • Speaking truthfully
  • Showing love and compassion
  • Obeying God’s commands
  • Treating others with dignity and respect

These actions do not purchase salvation. Rather, they can be evidence that God’s transforming work is taking place in a person’s life.

“Is Born of Him”

The final phrase is the foundation of the verse: “is born of him.”

John connects righteous living with being spiritually born of God. This points to the idea of spiritual transformation. A person who belongs to God receives a new spiritual identity and begins to develop a life that reflects the character of the One who gave him new life.

The expression “born of him” reminds believers that spiritual life originates with God. Christianity is not simply about improving one’s behavior through human effort. It involves a relationship with God that changes the heart and produces a different way of living.

Just as children can resemble their parents in various ways, those who are spiritually born of God are expected to reflect His character. Their lives should increasingly display qualities such as love, truth, holiness, mercy, humility, and righteousness.

Righteousness as Evidence of New Life

One of the central lessons of 1 John is that genuine spiritual life produces visible evidence.

John repeatedly contrasts darkness and light, truth and falsehood, love and hatred, righteousness and sin. His purpose is not to encourage believers to become proud of their good works. Instead, he wants them to understand that a transformed relationship with God affects practical behavior.

This provides an important spiritual examination.

A person can ask:

  • Is my life becoming more consistent with God’s teachings?
  • Do I desire to do what is right?
  • Do I recognize and turn away from sinful behavior?
  • Do I treat other people with love?
  • Am I becoming more truthful and compassionate?
  • Does my daily conduct reflect my faith?

These questions are not about claiming perfection. Christians can still fail, make mistakes, and need forgiveness. The broader message of 1 John recognizes the reality of sin while emphasizing the importance of walking in the light and remaining in Christ.

The Difference Between Perfection and Transformation

1 John 2:29 should not be misunderstood as saying that every believer will live a completely flawless life.

The Christian life is a journey of spiritual growth. A believer may stumble, make wrong decisions, or fall into temptation. However, there should be a continuing desire to follow Christ and practice righteousness.

The difference is between deliberately embracing unrighteousness as a way of life and sincerely seeking to follow God while growing in obedience.

Righteous living is therefore not about presenting oneself as perfect. It is about allowing one’s life to increasingly reflect Christ.

A Practical Message for Christians Today

This verse has a direct application to everyday life.

Faith should influence our behavior at home, at school, at work, in friendships, and online. It should affect the way we speak when nobody is watching, the way we respond when we are angry, and the way we treat people who cannot benefit us.

Doing righteousness can sometimes require difficult choices. Honesty may cost us an opportunity. Forgiveness may be difficult. Showing kindness may require sacrifice. Refusing to participate in wrongdoing may make us different from those around us.

Yet 1 John 2:29 reminds believers that righteousness is consistent with their spiritual identity.

If we claim to belong to God, our lives should increasingly demonstrate that relationship.

Relationship Between Faith and Works

This verse also helps explain the biblical relationship between faith and works.

Good works are not a replacement for faith. At the same time, genuine faith is not meant to remain without practical results. A changed relationship with God produces a changed pattern of life.

Therefore, Christians should neither depend on good works as a way to boast nor treat righteous living as unnecessary.

Instead, righteous actions should flow from a relationship with God.

“If ye know that he is righteous, ye know that every one that doeth righteousness is born of him.”
