What Does “Every Spirit” Mean?
The phrase “every spirit” should be understood in the context of spiritual teaching and prophetic claims. John is not telling believers to become afraid of every unseen spiritual influence. Instead, he is teaching them to exercise discernment.
People can claim to speak for God, teach spiritual truths, or deliver religious messages. However, a claim does not automatically make a message true. John therefore gives believers a standard by which teachings can be examined.
The important question is: Does the teaching confess the truth about Jesus Christ?
This principle remains important because religious language can sometimes sound convincing while presenting a message that differs from the teaching of Scripture. Discernment means comparing what is being taught with the truth revealed in the Bible.
“Jesus Christ Is Come in the Flesh”
The statement that Jesus Christ “is come in the flesh” is extremely important in John’s message.
John emphasizes that Jesus genuinely entered human history. He came in the flesh, lived among people, and was truly present as a human being. This teaching protects the Christian understanding of the incarnation.
The incarnation refers to the coming of the Son of God in human flesh. Jesus Christ was not merely an appearance or an illusion. His coming was real.
This truth is connected with the message of the Gospel. Jesus came into the world, lived among humanity, and gave Himself for the salvation of sinners. Therefore, denying His true coming in the flesh changes the foundation of the Christian message.
John does not present this teaching as a minor theological detail. He uses it as a test for determining whether a spiritual teaching comes from God.
“Is Not of God”
John then makes a direct statement: a spirit that does not confess that Jesus Christ came in the flesh “is not of God.”
This shows how seriously John treats the identity and incarnation of Jesus Christ.
A person may use religious words, speak about spirituality, or claim to possess special spiritual knowledge. But according to John, such claims must be tested against the truth about Christ.
The message of Christianity is centered on Jesus. Therefore, a teaching that rejects the biblical identity of Jesus cannot be treated as authentic Christian teaching simply because it uses religious language.
This gives believers an important principle of discernment: truth about Christ matters.
What Is the Spirit of Antichrist?
John calls the opposing spiritual influence “the spirit of antichrist.”
The word “antichrist” carries the idea of opposition to or rejection of Christ. In John’s letters, the term is connected with those who deny or distort the truth concerning Jesus.
John says, “this is that spirit of antichrist.” He reminds his readers that they had already heard that such opposition would come.
The important point is that John does not tell believers to become obsessed with identifying one particular person. Instead, he directs their attention toward recognizing opposition to the truth about Christ.
The phrase therefore has a strong connection with spiritual discernment. Christians are called to recognize teachings that contradict the truth about Jesus.
“Even Now Already Is It in the World”
John adds that the spirit of antichrist was already present in the world when he wrote the letter.
This statement shows that opposition to Christ was not only a future concern. It was already affecting the world of the early Christians.
False teaching was not something that believers could simply ignore. They needed to remain grounded in the truth because misleading teachings could arise within the religious environment around them.
This also explains why John repeatedly emphasizes truth, obedience, love, and discernment throughout his letters.
The Importance of Spiritual Discernment
1 John 4:3 teaches believers not to accept every spiritual claim automatically.
Spiritual discernment involves examining a teaching carefully. Christians can ask questions such as:
- What does this teaching say about Jesus Christ?
- Does it agree with Scripture?
- Does it recognize Jesus as truly coming in the flesh?
- Does it preserve the central message of the Gospel?
- Does the teacher’s message agree with the apostolic teaching found in Scripture?
Discernment is not the same as suspicion of everyone. Rather, it is the responsible examination of spiritual claims.
The Bible encourages believers to love truth while remaining alert to false teaching.
Connection With 1 John 4:2
Verse 3 should also be read together with verse 2. John says that the true Spirit of God acknowledges that Jesus Christ has come in the flesh. Verse 3 then presents the opposite position.
Together, these verses provide a contrast:
Truth: Jesus Christ has come in the flesh.
False teaching: Jesus Christ is denied or rejected in this essential truth.
This contrast makes the message easy to understand. John wants his readers to recognize that what people believe and teach about Jesus matters deeply.
Jesus Christ at the Center of Christian Faith
The verse reminds Christians that Jesus cannot be separated from the Gospel.
The Christian faith is not simply a collection of moral instructions. It is centered on the person and work of Jesus Christ.
Jesus came in the flesh. He lived among humanity. He taught the truth. He demonstrated God’s love. He gave Himself for sinners and is presented in Scripture as the Savior.
Therefore, denying essential truth about Christ is not a small disagreement. It affects the foundation of Christian belief.
Practical Lessons From 1 John 4:3
1. Test spiritual teachings
Not every spiritual message should be accepted without examination. Scripture calls believers to discern truth from error.
2. Keep Jesus Christ at the center
A teaching may sound spiritual, but Christians should ask what it actually teaches about Jesus.
3. Take false teaching seriously
John’s warning shows that false teaching was a real concern for early Christians. Believers should therefore remain grounded in Scripture.
4. Know the biblical message
Discernment becomes easier when believers understand Scripture. Knowing the truth helps people recognize teachings that contradict it.
5. Do not be easily deceived
John’s message encourages spiritual maturity. Believers should not follow every impressive claim simply because someone presents it confidently.

“And every spirit that confesseth not that Jesus Christ is come in the flesh is not of God: and this is that spirit of antichrist, whereof ye have heard that it should come; and even now already is it in the world.” — 1 John 4:3 (KJV)
