“He That Committeth Sin Is of the Devil”

John begins with a strong statement: “He that committeth sin is of the devil.”

In this context, John is describing a person whose life is characterized by sin. The surrounding passage repeatedly contrasts righteousness with sin. John wants believers to understand that Christianity is not simply a verbal profession. Faith in Christ should produce a changed way of living.

Sin separates people from God’s righteous purposes. When a person knowingly continues in sin without repentance, that pattern reflects opposition to God’s will rather than submission to it.

The statement should therefore be understood as a warning against making peace with sin. A believer should not treat sin as something insignificant or deliberately continue practicing it while claiming that obedience to God does not matter.

At the same time, Christians should remember the message of 1 John 1:9, which teaches that God forgives those who confess their sins. The Christian life involves repentance, forgiveness, growth, and dependence upon Christ.

“For the Devil Sinneth From the Beginning”

John then explains why he connects persistent sin with the devil:

“For the devil sinneth from the beginning.”

The devil is presented in Scripture as an opponent of God and a source of temptation and deception. His rebellion against God’s purposes is associated with sin from the beginning.

John’s point is that sin belongs to the character and work of the devil, whereas righteousness belongs to God. A person who deliberately embraces sin is therefore following a path that is contrary to God’s purposes.

This contrast helps Christians examine their lives. The question is not whether a person has ever made a mistake. Everyone needs God’s mercy. The important question is whether a person desires to follow God, turns away from sin, and seeks to live according to God’s Word.

“For This Purpose the Son of God Was Manifested”

The second half of the verse changes the focus from the problem of sin to the answer found in Jesus Christ:

“For this purpose the Son of God was manifested.”

The word “manifested” means that the Son of God was revealed or made known. John is speaking about the coming of Jesus Christ into the world.

Jesus Christ came with a divine purpose. His earthly ministry, death, resurrection, and continuing work all belong to God’s plan of salvation.

The Christian message is therefore not simply about identifying sin. It is about what God has done through Christ to rescue people from sin and restore them to fellowship with Him.

Jesus came to bring forgiveness and reconciliation. He calls people to repentance and faith and gives believers a new direction for life.

“That He Might Destroy the Works of the Devil”

The final statement is one of the most encouraging parts of the verse:

“That he might destroy the works of the devil.”

The purpose of Christ’s manifestation was to destroy the works of the devil.

This does not mean that every problem or temptation immediately disappears from a Christian’s life. Believers can still experience temptation, struggles, suffering, and spiritual battles. Instead, the verse points to Christ’s decisive victory over the power and purposes of evil.

Jesus’ work confronts sin at its root. Through Christ, believers can receive forgiveness rather than remaining condemned by their past. They can experience spiritual transformation rather than being permanently controlled by sinful patterns.

The victory of Christ also gives Christians confidence that evil does not have the final word. The devil may tempt and deceive, but Christ is greater, and His work provides the foundation for spiritual victory.

What Does 1 John 3:8 Teach Christians?

1. Sin Should Be Taken Seriously

The verse reminds us that sin is not something Christians should deliberately embrace. Sin damages our relationship with God and affects our relationship with other people.

Christians are therefore called to recognize sin, reject it, and turn toward God’s righteousness.

2. Jesus Came With a Specific Purpose

The coming of Jesus Christ was part of God’s plan. Jesus came to deal with sin and destroy the works of the devil.

This gives the Christian faith its message of hope. People do not have to remain trapped in their past failures.

3. Spiritual Transformation Is Possible

Because Jesus came to destroy the works of the devil, believers can experience genuine change. The Christian life is not merely about trying harder through human strength. It is about God’s grace working within a person who trusts and follows Christ.

4. Christians Should Not Make Sin Their Lifestyle

John’s teaching challenges believers to examine the direction of their lives. Occasional failure should lead to repentance rather than despair. But deliberate and continual rebellion against God should never be treated as normal Christian living.

5. Christ Is Greater Than the Works of Evil

The final message of this verse is ultimately about Jesus. The devil is mentioned, but Christ receives the final emphasis. The Son of God came to destroy the works of the devil.

For believers, this provides hope, courage, and confidence in God’s power.

“He that committeth sin is of the devil; for the devil sinneth from the beginning. For this purpose the Son of God was manifested, that he might destroy the works of the devil.”
