Matthew Chapter

Matthew Chapter 25

Matthew 25:25

Verse: And I was afraid and went and hid thy talent in the earth lo there thou hast that is thine

English Explanation: This verse highlights the mindset of the wicked and lazy servant. Driven by fear and a distorted view of his master’s character, he chose self-preservation over productivity. By burying the money, he ensured it would not be lost, but he also guaranteed it would not grow. It teaches that fear paralyzes potential and that God expects us to use our gifts actively rather than playing it safe out of fear.

Matthew 25:26

Verse: His lord answered and said unto him Thou wicked and slothful servant thou knewest that I reap where I sowed not and gather where I have not strawed

English Explanation: The master exposes the servant’s excuse. He calls him “wicked and slothful” (lazy). The master uses the servant’s own logic against him: if the servant truly believed the master was demanding and strict, he should have worked even harder to produce a return, rather than doing absolutely nothing.

Matthew 25:27

Verse: Thou oughtest therefore to have put my money to the exchangers and then at my coming I should have received mine own with usury

English Explanation: The master points out that even the absolute minimum effort would have yielded better results. Taking the money to the money changers (bankers) would have required very little effort but would have earned interest. God holds us accountable not just for blatant wrongdoing, but also for passive neglect of our divine potential.

Matthew 25:28

Verse: Take therefore the talent from him and give it unto him which hath ten talents

English Explanation: Judgment is pronounced through stripped opportunities. The unused resource is taken away and rewarded to the one who demonstrated the highest level of faithfulness and productivity. Spiritual resources that are neglected are eventually lost.

Matthew 25:29

Verse: For unto every one that hath shall be given and he shall have abundance but from him that hath not shall be taken away even that which he hath

English Explanation: This describes a spiritual law of the Kingdom. Those who faithfully utilize what God entrusts to them will receive even more, entering a state of spiritual abundance. Conversely, those who ignore or waste what they have been given will lose even the little they started with.

Matthew 25:30

Verse: And cast ye the unprofitable servant into outer darkness there shall be weeping and gnashing of teeth

English Explanation: The ultimate consequence of unfaithfulness is absolute separation from the presence of God, symbolized here as “outer darkness.” The phrase “weeping and gnashing of teeth” portrays intense regret, agony, and eternal sorrow for missing out on the joy of the Lord.

Matthew 25:31

Verse: When the Son of man shall come in his glory and all the holy angels with him then shall he sit upon the throne of his glory

English Explanation: Jesus shifts from parables to a vivid prophetic description of the Final Judgment. He claims His ultimate identity as the “Son of man” returning not in humility as a suffering servant, but in absolute, cosmic glory surrounded by heavenly hosts to take His rightful place as King and Judge.

Matthew 25:32

Verse: And before him shall be gathered all nations and he shall separate them one from another as a shepherd divideth his sheep from the goats

English Explanation: The judgment will be universal, encompassing “all nations.” The metaphor of a shepherd separating sheep from goats was highly relatable to an agricultural society. Sheep and goats often grazed together during the day, but were separated at night. Christ will perform a definitive, unerring separation of humanity.

Matthew 25:33

Verse: And he shall set the sheep on his right hand but the goats on the left

English Explanation: The right hand represents the position of honor, acceptance, and blessing, where the righteous (the sheep) are placed. The left hand signifies disfavor and condemnation, where the unrighteous (the goats) are positioned.

Matthew 25:34

Verse: Then shall the King say unto them on his right hand Come ye blessed of my Father inherit the kingdom prepared for you from the foundation of the world

English Explanation: The King welcomes the righteous to receive their ultimate inheritance. This kingdom was not an afterthought; it was prepared by God for His chosen people since the creation of the world. Their status is defined as “blessed of my Father.”

Matthew 25:35

Verse: For I was an hungred and ye gave me meat I was thirsty and ye gave me drink I was a stranger and ye took me in

English Explanation: Jesus explains the criteria of the judgment: practical, tangible love shown to those in distress. True righteousness is manifested in acts of compassion meeting basic human needs—feeding the hungry, giving water to the thirsty, and welcoming the lonely outsider.

Matthew 25:36

Verse: Naked and ye clothed me I was sick and ye visited me I was in prison and ye came unto me

English Explanation: The list of compassionate acts continues, emphasizing care for the vulnerable, the sick, and the marginalized. Visiting those in prison or looking after the sick requires personal sacrifice, time, and entering into the suffering of others, which reflects the heart of Christ.

Matthew 25:37

Verse: Then shall the righteous answer him saying Lord when saw we thee an hungred and fed thee or thirsty and gave thee drink

English Explanation: The righteous are surprised. Their acts of service were done out of genuine love and humility, not for display or to earn points with God. They did not realize that in serving the broken, they were directly serving the Lord.

Matthew 25:38

Verse: When saw we thee a stranger and took thee in or naked and clothed thee

English Explanation: The righteous continue their humble inquiry, tracing back the instances mentioned by the King. This highlights their pure motives; they treated the vulnerable with dignity simply because it was the right, loving thing to do.

Matthew 25:39

Verse: Or when saw we thee sick or in prison and came unto thee

English Explanation: The final question of astonishment from the righteous regarding the sick and imprisoned. It underscores that true Christian service is often quiet, unassuming, and completely focused on the neighbor in need, without seeking cosmic recognition.

Matthew 25:40

Verse: And the King shall answer and say unto them Verily I say unto you Inasmuch as ye have done it unto one of the least of these my brethren ye have done it unto me

English Explanation: This is the pinnacle of the passage. Jesus completely identifies Himself with the poor, the suffering, and the marginalized. What we do to the “least” of society—those deemed unimportant by the world—we do directly to Jesus Christ Himself.

Matthew 25:41

Verse: Then shall he say also unto them on the left hand Depart from me ye cursed into everlasting fire prepared for the devil and his angels

English Explanation: The King turns to the unrighteous on His left. Their judgment is severe: eternal banishment from God’s presence into the everlasting fire. Notably, this punishment was originally prepared for the devil and his fallen angels, but those who reject love and follow wickedness share in their ultimate destiny.

Matthew 25:42

Verse: For I was an hungred and ye gave me no meat I was thirsty and ye gave me no drink

English Explanation: The condemnation of the goats is not based on crimes they actively committed, but on the good they failed to do (sins of omission). Their sin was indifference. They saw suffering and did absolutely nothing to alleviate it.

Matthew 25:43

Verse: I was a stranger and ye took me not in naked and ye clothed me not sick and in prison and ye visited me not

English Explanation: Jesus lists their failure to love the stranger, clothe the naked, and visit the sick and imprisoned. A life devoid of active compassion and charity is a life that rejects the identity of a true disciple of Christ.

Matthew 25:44

Verse: Then shall they also answer him saying Lord when saw we thee an hungred or athirst or a stranger or naked or sick or in prison and did not minister unto thee

English Explanation: Like the righteous, the unrighteous are also surprised, but for the opposite reason. They imply that if they had seen Jesus Himself in these conditions, they would have gladly helped. They failed to realize that Christ was present in the daily suffering of ordinary people around them.

Matthew 25:45

Verse: Then shall he answer them saying Verily I say unto you Inasmuch as ye did it not to one of the least of these ye did it not to me

English Explanation: The definitive response: ignoring the needy is identical to ignoring Christ. Indifference toward human suffering is a direct rejection of God. Religion without active love for our neighbor is hollow and empty.

Matthew 25:46

Verse: And these shall go away into everlasting punishment but the righteous into life eternal

English Explanation: The chapter concludes with the finality of eternity. There are only two destinations based on the cosmic judgment: everlasting punishment for the unrighteous and life eternal for those who lived out the love of God. Both states are permanent and final.

Matthew Chapter 26

Matthew 26:1

Verse: And it came to pass when Jesus had finished all these sayings he said unto his disciples

English Explanation: This marks a major transition in the Gospel of Matthew. Jesus finishes His major public discourses and teachings (including the Olivet Discourse of chapters 24-25) and shifts His focus entirely toward the impending events of His passion, cross, and crucifixion.

Matthew 26:2

Verse: Ye know that after two days is the feast of the passover and the Son of man is betrayed to be crucified

English Explanation: Jesus accurately predicts the exact timing of His crucifixion, linking it to the Feast of the Passover. Just as the Passover lamb was sacrificed to save Israel from death in Egypt, Jesus, the true Lamb of God, was preparing to be betrayed and sacrificed for the sins of the world.

Matthew 26:3

Verse: Then assembled together the chief priests and the scribes and the elders of the people unto the palace of the high priest who was called Caiaphas

English Explanation: While Jesus is preparing His disciples for His sacrifice, His enemies are actively plotting His demise. The political and religious elite—chief priests, scribes, and elders—convene a secret council at the palace of Caiaphas, the High Priest, showcasing the institutional conspiracy against Christ.

Matthew 26:4

Verse: And consulted that they might take Jesus by subtilty and kill him

English Explanation: The religious authorities realized they could not arrest Jesus openly because of His massive popularity among the common people. Therefore, they actively plotted to use “subtilty” (stealth, trickery, or deceit) to capture and execute Him away from public view.

Matthew 26:5

Verse: But they said Not on the feast day lest there be an uproar among the people

English Explanation: The conspirators feared a political revolt or riot, as Jerusalem was filled with hundreds of thousands of pilgrims celebrating the Passover who revered Jesus as a prophet. They wanted to wait until after the festival, but divine timing overrode their plans to ensure Christ died exactly on the Passover.

Matthew 26:6

Verse: Now when Jesus was in Bethany in the house of Simon the leper

English Explanation: The narrative moves to Bethany, a small village near Jerusalem where Jesus often stayed. He is hosted at the house of “Simon the leper,” a man who had likely been healed by Jesus, symbolizing Christ’s constant fellowship with those who were once outcasts.

Matthew 26:7

Verse: There came unto him a woman having an alabaster box of very precious ointment and poured it on his head as he sat at meat

English Explanation: A woman (identified elsewhere as Mary, sister of Lazarus) approaches Jesus with an alabaster flask of incredibly expensive perfume. In an act of profound, lavish devotion and worship, she pours it over His head as He dines, holding nothing back from her Savior.

Matthew 26:8

Verse: But when his disciples saw it they had indignation saying To what purpose is this waste

English Explanation: The disciples, viewed through a purely pragmatic and worldly lens, misinterpret this beautiful act of worship as a “waste.” They focus on the monetary value of the perfume rather than the spiritual significance and devotion behind the gesture.

Matthew 26:9

Verse: For this ointment might have been sold for much and given to the poor

English Explanation: The disciples argue that the perfume could have been converted into cash to help the poor. While caring for the poor is a vital biblical mandate, they used it here as a pious excuse, missing the historic, unique moment of honoring the Son of God right before His death.

Matthew 26:10

Verse: When Jesus understood it he said unto them Why trouble ye the woman for she hath wrought a good work upon me

English Explanation: Jesus defends the woman against the critical disciples. He commands them to stop troubling her, validating her actions not as a waste, but as a “good work.” Christ values deep, sacrificial devotion directed toward Him.

Matthew 26:11

Verse: For ye have the poor always with you but me ye have not always

English Explanation: Jesus states a practical reality: poverty is an ongoing issue that they will always have opportunities to address. However, His physical presence on earth was coming to an end within days. This highlights the principle of prioritization in worship and recognizing unique seasons of divine opportunity.

Matthew 26:12

Verse: For in that she hath poured this ointment on my body she did it for my burial

English Explanation: Jesus reveals the prophetic dimension of the woman’s action. Whether she fully realized it or not, anointing His body with perfume prefigured the preparation of a body for burial. Jesus uses this moment to remind everyone once again of His impending death.

Matthew 26:13

Verse: Verily I say unto you Wheresoever this gospel shall be preached in the whole world there shall also this that this woman hath done be told for a memorial of her

English Explanation: Jesus grants this woman a lasting legacy. Wherever the global message of the Gospel is shared, her act of selfless devotion will be remembered. True devotion to Christ is never forgotten by God and serves as an eternal inspiration to the global church.

Matthew 26:14

Verse: Then one of the twelve called Judas Iscariot went unto the chief priests

English Explanation: The scene abruptly contrasts the lavish love of the woman with ultimate betrayal. Judas Iscariot, one of Christ’s chosen twelve disciples, willingly walks away from Christ and seeks out the chief priests to conspire against his Master.

Matthew 26:15

Verse: And said unto them What will ye give me and I will deliver him unto you And they covenanted with him for thirty pieces of silver

English Explanation: Judas reduces the worth of the Savior to financial gain, asking, “What will ye give me?” They agree on thirty pieces of silver—the exact prophetic price of a common slave under Mosaic law (Exodus 21:32), demonstrating how cheaply the world valued the Son of God.

Matthew 26:16

Verse: And from that time he sought opportunity to betray him

English Explanation: Once the transaction was completed, Judas actively looked for the perfect context—away from the protective crowds—to hand Jesus over quietly to the authorities. His heart was fully hardened and committed to the betrayal.

Matthew 26:17

Verse: Now the first day of the feast of unleavened bread the disciples came to Jesus saying unto him Where wilt thou that we prepare for thee to eat the passover

English Explanation: As the Feast of Unleavened Bread (integrated with Passover) begins, the disciples ask Jesus where they should set up the traditional Passover meal. This shows Jesus’ commitment to fulfilling the requirements of the Jewish Law and setting the stage for the Last Supper.

Matthew 26:18

Verse: And he said Go into the city to such a man and say unto him The Master saith My time is at hand I will keep the passover at thy house with my disciples

English Explanation: Jesus gives specific yet discreet instructions to go to a certain man in Jerusalem. By saying “My time is at hand,” Jesus acknowledges His sovereign awareness that the hour of His sacrifice has arrived, choosing a private home to celebrate with His spiritual family.

Matthew 26:19

Verse: And the disciples did as Jesus had appointed them and they made ready the passover

English Explanation: The disciples demonstrate obedience, executing Christ’s instructions exactly as commanded. They prepared the traditional elements of the Passover—such as the lamb, bitter herbs, and unleavened bread—unwittingly setting the table for the new covenant.

Matthew 26:20

Verse: Now when the even was come he sat down with the twelve

English Explanation: As evening falls, the intimate fellowship begins. Jesus sits down with His inner circle—the twelve apostles, including His betrayer, Judas. This bittersweet moment initiates the historic events of the Last Supper, where Christ willingly spends His final hours showing love to His disciples.
