“And we have seen”
John begins with the words, “And we have seen.” This emphasizes the testimony of the apostles. John and the other disciples were witnesses of Jesus Christ during His earthly ministry.
They saw His works, heard His teaching, witnessed His compassion, and observed His life. The apostles’ testimony was therefore connected with their experience of Christ.
Christian faith is presented in the New Testament not simply as belief in an abstract concept but as faith centered on the historical person and work of Jesus Christ. John repeatedly emphasizes the importance of witnessing and proclaiming what the apostles had experienced.
This also reminds Christians that faith should produce testimony. Those who have experienced God’s grace can share what they have learned about Christ with others.
“And do testify”
John continues, “and do testify.” To testify means to give witness or declare something that one knows to be true.
John is not keeping this message private. He and the other apostles are publicly declaring what they know concerning Jesus Christ. Their testimony points people toward the saving work of Christ.
Christian testimony can take different forms. A believer may explain the Gospel, share how Scripture has changed their understanding of God, or speak about the hope found through Jesus Christ.
The central purpose of Christian testimony should remain Christ rather than the person giving the testimony. The message is not primarily about human achievement. It is about what God has done through His Son.
“That the Father sent the Son”
The next phrase gives us the source and mission of Christ: “that the Father sent the Son.”
The word “sent” communicates purpose. Jesus did not come into the world without a mission. According to John, His coming was part of God’s saving purpose.
The Father sent the Son, and the Son came into the world to accomplish the work of salvation. This reveals the unity of purpose between the Father and the Son.
The Gospel message therefore begins with God’s initiative. Humanity’s salvation is not presented as something people accomplish independently. God acted first by sending His Son.
This truth also highlights the depth of God’s love. In the surrounding passage, John explains that God’s love was manifested through sending His Son into the world.
“To be the Saviour”
The purpose of Christ’s mission is stated clearly: “to be the Saviour.”
A saviour is one who delivers or rescues. In the Christian understanding, Jesus is the Saviour because salvation from sin is accomplished through Him.
The Bible repeatedly connects Jesus Christ with salvation. His mission was not simply to become a moral teacher or an example of kindness. He came with a saving purpose.
This gives the Christian message its central focus. Jesus Christ is not merely someone who tells people how to live; He is presented as the One through whom salvation is offered.
The title Saviour also points toward humanity’s need. If Christ is the Saviour, then people need salvation. The Gospel addresses the problem of sin and presents God’s provision through Jesus Christ.
“Of the world”
John concludes with the words, “of the world.”
This expression emphasizes the broad scope of Christ’s saving mission. The message of Jesus is not restricted to one nation, one social group, or one particular culture.
The Gospel is presented as a message for the world.
This does not mean that every person automatically receives salvation without faith or response. Rather, it emphasizes the worldwide scope of God’s saving purpose and the universal proclamation of the Gospel.
Christ’s message is therefore intended to cross geographical, cultural, and social boundaries. Christians are called to share the Gospel with others because Jesus is presented as the Saviour of the world.
The Importance of Christian Testimony
1 John 4:14 also teaches an important lesson about testimony.
John says, “we have seen and do testify.” The apostles did not simply receive information and keep it to themselves. They communicated what they had witnessed.
Christian testimony should be truthful, humble, and centered on Christ. It should not exaggerate personal experiences or make claims that Scripture does not support.
A faithful witness points people toward Jesus and the message of the Gospel.
God’s Love and Christ’s Mission
This verse should also be understood in the context of 1 John 4. The chapter repeatedly emphasizes God’s love.
God’s love is demonstrated through action. He sent His Son into the world. The sending of Christ shows that God’s love is not merely a word or an emotion; it is expressed through His saving work.
The believer’s response should therefore include love for God and love for others. Because God has shown love through Christ, Christians are called to reflect that love in their relationships and daily lives.
What 1 John 4:14 Teaches Christians Today
There are several practical lessons from this verse.
First, salvation begins with God’s initiative. The Father sent the Son. The Gospel therefore directs attention toward God’s grace and provision.
Second, Jesus Christ has a unique saving mission. John identifies Him as the Saviour of the world.
Third, Christians are called to testify. The apostles shared what they had seen and known. Believers today can also communicate the message of Christ faithfully.
Fourth, the Gospel is universal in its scope. The phrase “Saviour of the world” reminds Christians that the message of Christ is intended for people from every nation and background.
Fifth, Christian faith should lead to action. Those who understand God’s love are called to demonstrate love toward others.1 John 4:14 —
“And we have seen and do testify that the Father sent the Son to be the Saviour of the world.”
