“And we have known and believed the love that God hath to us”

John begins with two closely connected ideas: known and believed.

To know God’s love means to recognize and experience the reality of what God has done. Christian faith is not based only on a general belief that God is loving. The New Testament repeatedly points believers toward God’s actions, especially the sending of Jesus Christ.

God’s love is demonstrated through His willingness to reach humanity with grace, forgiveness, and salvation. Because God’s love has been revealed, believers are called to know it rather than remain uncertain about His character.

John also says that believers have believed this love. Knowing facts about God’s love and trusting that love are related but distinct. A person may understand something intellectually without allowing it to shape their life. John describes a faith that receives God’s love with confidence.

Believing God’s love can provide a foundation for Christian living. When people understand that God’s character is loving and trustworthy, they can approach Him with faith rather than continually living in fear and uncertainty.

“God is love”

This is the central statement of the verse.

When John says “God is love,” he is describing God’s character. The statement does not mean that everything called “love” is automatically God’s will, nor does it mean that love is simply another name for God. Rather, John teaches that genuine love is deeply connected with who God is.

The surrounding verses show what John means by love. God’s love is demonstrated through His actions, particularly His sending of His Son. Therefore, biblical love is more than emotion. It includes self-giving, sacrifice, grace, faithfulness, and concern for the good of others.

This truth is important because human ideas about love can change. Feelings may change, relationships may change, and circumstances may change. But God’s character remains a dependable foundation.

The statement “God is love” should therefore encourage believers to understand God’s actions through His revealed character. God’s love is not weak or passive. It is active and purposeful.

“He that dwelleth in love dwelleth in God”

John then connects God’s love with the believer’s daily life.

To dwell in love means to remain or live in a pattern of genuine love. John is not saying that occasional kindness makes someone spiritually perfect. Instead, he describes a continuing direction of life.

A person who has received God’s love should increasingly demonstrate that love toward others. This includes showing kindness, forgiveness, patience, compassion, humility, and concern for other people.

The phrase “dwelleth in God” describes fellowship with God. The Christian life is not simply about knowing religious information. It is about living in relationship with God.

This gives the verse a practical message: God’s love should become visible in the believer’s behavior.

If someone claims to know God but consistently chooses hatred, cruelty, bitterness, or selfishness, that person’s lifestyle contradicts the message John is teaching. Throughout 1 John, love for other believers is presented as evidence of genuine fellowship with God.

“And God in him”

The final phrase is equally significant: “and God in him.”

John describes a relationship in which the believer dwells in God and God dwells in the believer. This expresses the closeness of fellowship between God and those who belong to Him.

The following verses continue this theme by explaining that believers recognize God’s love through what He has done and that His love reaches its proper expression in those who live according to it.

This does not mean that a Christian becomes God. Instead, it describes God’s presence and work in the life of the believer.

The Christian’s life should increasingly reflect the character of the God they worship. As God’s love shapes a believer’s heart, that love should become visible through words, decisions, relationships, and actions.

The Relationship Between Faith and Love

1 John 4:16 brings faith and love together.

First, believers know God’s love.
Second, they believe God’s love.
Third, they dwell in love.
Finally, John describes fellowship with God.

This shows that Christian love is not separated from Christian faith. Believing God’s love should produce a changed way of living.

A person who understands God’s grace can extend grace to others. A person who has received forgiveness can learn to forgive. A person who has experienced God’s patience can become more patient with others.

This does not mean that Christians will never struggle with anger, disappointment, or conflict. Rather, it means that God’s love becomes the direction and foundation of their lives.

What 1 John 4:16 Teaches About Christian Relationships

This verse has a strong practical application.

Christian love should influence how believers treat family members, friends, neighbors, fellow believers, and even people with whom they disagree.

Love can be expressed through simple actions:

  • Showing kindness to someone who is struggling
  • Forgiving when forgiveness is appropriate
  • Speaking truth without unnecessary harshness
  • Helping someone in need
  • Being patient with others
  • Avoiding hatred and bitterness
  • Praying for others
  • Treating people with dignity and compassion

Biblical love does not mean approving everything another person does. Genuine love can include correction, wisdom, boundaries, and truth. However, it should not be motivated by hatred or a desire to harm.

The example of God’s love provides the standard for Christian conduct.

Why This Verse Matters Today

Modern life can easily become focused on competition, arguments, resentment, and self-interest. 1 John 4:16 calls believers back to a different foundation.

God’s love provides a reason for Christians to treat other people with dignity and compassion. It reminds believers that faith is not only expressed through words but also through character.

The verse also offers encouragement to people who struggle with fear about whether God cares for them. John points believers toward the love God has already revealed. God’s love is something they are called to know and believe.

Rather than building faith entirely on changing emotions, believers can look to God’s revealed character and His actions.

Spiritual Application

There are several questions that can help a believer apply 1 John 4:16:

Do I truly believe that God loves me?

Does God’s love influence the way I treat other people?

Am I allowing bitterness or hatred to control my relationships?

Does my daily life reflect the character of the God I claim to know?

Am I growing in patience, forgiveness, kindness, and compassion?

These questions help move the verse from information into practical Christian living.

“And we have known and believed the love that God hath to us. God is love; and he that dwelleth in love dwelleth in God, and God in him.” — 1 John 4:16 (KJV)

God
