Meaning of “If a man say, I love God”

John begins with a person’s confession: “I love God.”

It is possible to speak religious words without allowing those words to transform our behavior. A person may claim devotion to God, pray, attend worship, read Scripture, or speak about faith, but John asks us to look beyond words.

According to this passage, love for God should have practical consequences.

Love for God involves more than saying that we love Him. It involves obedience, faith, compassion, forgiveness, humility, and love toward others. When God’s love becomes central in a person’s life, it should influence the way that person treats family members, friends, neighbors, fellow believers, and even people with whom there are disagreements.

Therefore, John’s teaching is not simply about what someone says. It is about whether their actions are consistent with their confession.

“And hateth his brother, he is a liar”

The next statement is direct: “and hateth his brother, he is a liar.”

John is addressing a serious contradiction. Someone claims to love God while deliberately maintaining hatred toward another person.

The word “brother” in this context points especially toward one’s fellow believer, although the broader teaching of Scripture calls people toward love and compassion more generally.

John is not saying that Christians will never experience anger, disagreement, disappointment, or hurt. People can have difficult relationships and still need to work through genuine conflicts. The warning concerns hatred that is maintained in opposition to the command of love.

Christian love does not mean pretending that wrongdoing never happened. It does not mean ignoring injustice or refusing to establish healthy boundaries. Instead, biblical love means refusing to allow hatred to become the governing attitude of the heart.

A person may disagree with someone while still treating that person with dignity. A person may correct another person without hatred. A person may create distance from someone who causes harm while still refusing to desire evil for them.

“For he that loveth not his brother whom he hath seen”

John then gives a logical question.

A human being can see other people. We encounter them in ordinary life. We can see their needs, hear their words, observe their struggles, and respond to their circumstances.

Because other people are visible to us, our love for them provides an opportunity to demonstrate the love we claim to have for God.

This is an important principle: love should become visible through actions.

If someone says that God is important to them but consistently refuses to show love, mercy, patience, or compassion toward people they can actually see, their claim deserves serious examination.

The Christian faith is not intended to remain only an invisible idea inside the heart. It should influence visible behavior.

“How can he love God whom he hath not seen?”

John contrasts the visible with the invisible.

Human beings can see their brothers and sisters, while God is not presently seen by human eyes in the ordinary physical sense. Yet a person claims to love this unseen God.

John’s question is designed to expose the contradiction:

If someone refuses to love the person standing in front of them, how can they sincerely claim to love the God they cannot see?

This does not mean that God is unknowable. Scripture teaches that God has revealed Himself through His works, His Word, and ultimately through Jesus Christ. But the verse emphasizes that genuine love for God should express itself in relationships with other people.

Our treatment of others can therefore reveal something about the reality of our professed faith.

Love Is More Than an Emotion

One of the most important lessons from 1 John 4:20 is that biblical love is not merely a feeling.

Feelings can change. People may sometimes feel close to someone and at other times feel frustrated or disappointed. Christian love goes deeper than temporary emotions.

Love can involve:

  • Showing kindness
  • Practicing forgiveness
  • Speaking truthfully
  • Showing patience
  • Helping someone in need
  • Refusing revenge
  • Treating others with dignity
  • Praying for those who have wronged us
  • Seeking reconciliation when appropriate
  • Refusing to nurture hatred

This does not mean allowing someone to continue harming us. Biblical love and appropriate boundaries can exist together.

The Connection Between 1 John 4:20 and 1 John 4:19

The previous verse says:

“We love him, because he first loved us.”

This provides an important background to verse 20.

Christian love begins with God’s love. God is the source from which Christian love flows. Because God first loved His people, believers are called to reflect that love in their relationships.

Therefore, 1 John 4:19 and 4:20 can be understood together:

God’s love comes first, and our love toward others should be a response to that love.

If a person truly understands God’s love, that understanding should gradually affect the way they treat others.

Love Does Not Ignore Wrongdoing

It is also important not to misunderstand this verse.

Loving someone does not mean approving everything they do. Christians can recognize sin, injustice, dishonesty, or harmful behavior while still refusing hatred.

Jesus Himself taught His followers to love their enemies and pray for those who persecute them. Biblical love is therefore much stronger than simply loving people who are easy to love.

Love can include correction, wisdom, boundaries, forgiveness, and truth.

The goal is not to call evil good. The goal is to respond without allowing hatred to control the heart.

Practical Lessons for Christians

1. Examine Your Words and Actions

It is easy to say, “I love God.” John encourages believers to examine whether their everyday behavior supports that confession.

2. Do Not Nurture Hatred

Anger may arise because of genuine hurt, but continually feeding hatred can damage both relationships and spiritual life. Believers should seek God’s help in dealing with anger and bitterness.

3. Practice Visible Love

Love should become practical. Helping, encouraging, forgiving, listening, and showing compassion are ways love becomes visible.

4. Remember That People Matter to God

Every person has value as someone created by God. Treating people with dignity reflects an understanding of God’s concern for His creation.

5. Seek Reconciliation When It Is Wise and Safe

When relationships are damaged, believers should seek peace when possible. However, reconciliation does not require returning to unsafe or abusive situations. Wisdom and appropriate boundaries remain important.

A Message for Daily Life

1 John 4:20 challenges believers to look honestly at their relationships.

It is possible to speak passionately about faith while treating others with contempt. John warns that such a contradiction should not be ignored.

The verse calls Christians toward integrity: what we profess with our lips should be reflected in our lives.

If we say that we love God, that love should gradually become visible in our relationships. We should become more willing to forgive, more patient with others, more compassionate toward those in need, and less willing to allow hatred to control our hearts.

The verse therefore brings together two dimensions of Christian faith: love for God and love for people.

Urdu Explanation — 1
