“There was there with us a young man”

The chief butler refers to Joseph as “a young man.” Joseph had spent years experiencing circumstances that were very different from what God had ultimately prepared for him.

He had been separated from his family, sold into Egypt, falsely accused, and imprisoned. From a human perspective, these events could have appeared to be a series of disappointments. However, the biblical narrative shows that God was working through Joseph’s circumstances.

The phrase reminds readers that God can work through people regardless of their age or social position. Joseph was not introduced as a powerful official. He was introduced simply as a young man.

His position did not determine the importance of what God could accomplish through him.

“An Hebrew”

The chief butler identifies Joseph as “an Hebrew.” Joseph was a foreigner in Egypt. He did not belong to the Egyptian royal household, and he did not possess the social standing of Pharaoh’s advisers.

This detail is significant because Joseph was about to enter a situation in which Egyptian wise men had failed to provide an answer. The person who could provide the needed interpretation was an outsider.

The story demonstrates that God’s purposes are not limited by nationality, social status, or human expectations. Joseph’s identity as a Hebrew did not prevent God from using him in Egypt.

“Servant to the captain of the guard”

Joseph is also described as a servant connected with the captain of the guard. This reflects his low position in Egyptian society at that time.

Joseph had once been favored in his father’s household, but his circumstances had changed dramatically. He had become a servant and later a prisoner.

Yet the biblical story teaches an important lesson: present circumstances do not necessarily reveal a person’s future purpose.

Joseph’s difficult circumstances did not mean that God had abandoned him. His experiences were preparing him for responsibilities that he could not yet see.

“We told him”

The chief butler remembers that Joseph had listened to the dreams of himself and the chief baker.

Joseph did not merely hear the dreams; he gave attention to their meaning. Earlier, Joseph had explained that interpretations belong to God. His ability was therefore presented not as personal supernatural power, but as something associated with God.

This is an important spiritual principle. Joseph did not make himself the center of the interpretation. He served as the person through whom the interpretation was given.

“And he interpreted to us our dreams”

Joseph had interpreted the dreams of the two imprisoned officials accurately.

The chief butler had dreamed about three branches, and Joseph explained the dream as a prediction of his restoration to Pharaoh’s service. The chief baker had also received an interpretation, and Joseph explained what his dream meant.

The fulfillment of those interpretations eventually provided evidence that Joseph’s ability to interpret dreams was trustworthy.

Now, when Pharaoh’s dreams created a crisis, the chief butler remembered Joseph.

This illustrates how something that seemed small in the past could become important later. Joseph’s faithful service in prison had not been wasted.

“To each man according to his dream”

This phrase emphasizes that Joseph gave a specific interpretation to each person’s dream.

The dreams were different, and the interpretations were different. Joseph did not give the same general answer to everyone. He explained each dream according to its meaning.

This reminds readers that wisdom requires careful attention. Joseph listened, considered the circumstances, and communicated the interpretation appropriate to each dream.

“He did interpret”

The repetition emphasizes that Joseph successfully interpreted the dreams.

The chief butler’s testimony about Joseph became especially important because Pharaoh was searching for someone who could explain his own dreams.

The events of Genesis 41 therefore show a major turning point. The prisoner who had seemed forgotten was about to stand before Pharaoh.

Joseph’s journey teaches that difficult seasons can have a purpose even when that purpose is not immediately visible.

Spiritual Lessons from Genesis 41:12

1. God can work through ordinary people

Joseph was described as a young Hebrew servant, yet God used him in a significant way. A person’s social position does not determine whether God can work through them.

2. Faithfulness matters even when nobody seems to notice

Joseph had remained faithful during difficult circumstances. His work in prison eventually became connected to a much larger purpose.

This encourages believers to remain faithful even when their efforts appear unnoticed.

3. God’s gifts should be used to serve others

Joseph used his ability to interpret dreams to help others. He did not use the gift merely to gain attention for himself.

God-given abilities can become opportunities to serve, encourage, and help other people.

4. A difficult past does not have to define the future

Joseph’s past included betrayal, slavery, false accusation, and imprisonment. Nevertheless, those experiences did not prevent him from moving into a new stage of life.

His story provides hope that present difficulties do not necessarily determine what comes next.

5. God can open unexpected doors

Joseph was not planning a meeting with Pharaoh. The opportunity came through circumstances that he could not control.

The chief butler’s remembrance of Joseph became the connection that brought Joseph out of prison.

پیدائش 41:12 (KJV):
“And there was there with us a young man, an Hebrew, servant to the captain of the guard; and we told him, and he interpreted to us our dreams; to each man according to his dream he did interpret.”
