English Explanation of 1 John 5:6
“This is he that came by water and blood”
John begins by identifying the person about whom he is speaking: Jesus Christ. The statement is not merely about a religious teacher or prophet. John is presenting Jesus as the Christ who came according to God’s purpose.
The phrase “by water and blood” has an important connection with the earthly ministry of Jesus. One widely held interpretation understands water as referring to Jesus’ baptism and blood as referring to His death.
At His baptism, Jesus publicly entered His ministry. His baptism was accompanied by divine testimony, and the event marked an important public revelation of His identity and mission. Jesus did not simply appear as a teacher; His ministry was connected with God’s plan.
The reference to blood points toward the death of Jesus Christ. The cross is central to the Christian message because Christians believe that Jesus willingly gave His life for the salvation of humanity. His death was not an insignificant ending to His ministry. It was a fundamental part of His mission.
By mentioning both water and blood, John presents a complete testimony concerning Christ rather than allowing attention to remain on only one part of His earthly ministry.
“Even Jesus Christ”
John makes the identity clear: “even Jesus Christ.”
The name Jesus identifies the historical person who lived and ministered among people, while Christ means the Anointed One, the Messiah. John therefore connects the historical Jesus with the Christ whom Christians confess.
This is important because Christian faith is not based simply on abstract spiritual ideas. It is centered on the person and work of Jesus Christ.
“Not by water only, but by water and blood”
This statement is one of the strongest emphases in the verse.
John deliberately says “not by water only.” He wants his readers to understand that Christ’s identity and mission cannot be separated from His death.
If water is understood as Christ’s baptism, John is saying that Jesus’ ministry cannot be considered apart from the cross. The One who was publicly revealed at the beginning of His ministry is the same One who gave His life at the end of His earthly ministry.
The Christian message includes both the ministry of Christ and His sacrificial death. Jesus was not merely an example of righteousness or a teacher of spiritual truth. According to the Christian Gospel, His death has saving significance.
This also reminds believers not to create a partial picture of Jesus. Christianity teaches about His birth, ministry, teachings, miracles, baptism, crucifixion, resurrection, and exaltation. Each part contributes to understanding His identity and mission.
“And it is the Spirit that beareth witness”
John then introduces another witness: the Spirit.
The Holy Spirit is presented as bearing witness to the truth about Jesus Christ. In the New Testament, the Spirit’s testimony is closely connected with revealing and confirming the truth of Christ.
The Spirit does not give a message that contradicts the Gospel. Instead, the Spirit bears witness to the truth concerning Jesus.
This is significant because Christianity is not presented as something based solely on human opinion. John points to divine testimony concerning Christ.
The witness of the Spirit also has a personal significance for believers. Christians understand the Holy Spirit as the One who works in believers, teaches them, guides them into truth, and strengthens their faith.
“Because the Spirit is truth”
John concludes with a powerful statement: “the Spirit is truth.”
Truth is one of the major themes throughout John’s writings. John repeatedly emphasizes that Jesus is connected with truth and that God’s revelation can be trusted.
When John says that the Spirit is truth, he establishes the reliability of the Spirit’s testimony. The Spirit’s witness is not uncertain human speculation. It is consistent with God’s truth.
For believers, this provides encouragement. Faith in Jesus Christ is not meant to rest upon confusion or deception. God’s Spirit bears witness to the truth of Christ.
The Meaning of Water, Blood, and Spirit
A helpful way to understand this verse is to consider the three witnesses together.
Water can be understood as pointing to Jesus’ baptism and the beginning of His public ministry.
Blood points to His death and the sacrifice He made on the cross.
Spirit points to the divine witness that confirms the truth concerning Jesus.
The three together give a unified testimony. Jesus Christ was publicly revealed, gave His life, and is confirmed by the witness of the Spirit.
Different Christian interpreters have explained the details of “water” and “blood” somewhat differently. Some have connected the water with baptism, while others have discussed broader symbolic meanings. The verse itself, however, clearly emphasizes that Jesus Christ came “by water and blood” and that the Spirit bears witness.
Therefore, the central message is not dependent on solving every interpretive question. John wants believers to recognize the true Christ and trust the testimony God has given concerning Him.
Why This Verse Matters for Christian Faith
1 John 5:6 is important because it protects the central Christian confession about Jesus.
John’s message is that Jesus Christ must be understood in the fullness of His mission. His ministry cannot be separated from His death, and His identity cannot be separated from the testimony of the Spirit.
This verse therefore encourages believers to remain grounded in the biblical testimony about Jesus rather than accepting teachings that change His identity or mission.
It also reminds Christians that God’s truth is consistent. The baptism, death, and witness of the Spirit all point toward the same Christ.
“This is he that came by water and blood, even Jesus Christ; not by water only, but by water and blood. And it is the Spirit that beareth witness, because the Spirit is truth.” — 1
