Verse-by-Verse Commentary
Mark 9:9
Verse: And as they came down from the mountain he charged them that they should tell no man what things they had seen till the Son of man were risen from the dead
-
English Explanation: Following the glorious Transfiguration, Jesus commands Peter, James, and John to maintain secrecy regarding the supernatural vision. The disciples could not yet fully comprehend the divine identity of Christ without the context of the Cross and Resurrection. Revealing it prematurely would fuel political, nationalistic expectations of the Messiah rather than spiritual understanding.
-
Mark 9:10
Verse: And they kept that saying with themselves questioning one with another what the rising from the dead should mean
-
English Explanation: The disciples obeyed Jesus’ command to stay silent, but they were deeply perplexed by His mention of rising from the dead. While traditional Jewish theology held a belief in a general resurrection at the end of time, the concept of an individual Messiah dying and rising again within history was completely foreign and confusing to them.
-
Mark 9:11
Verse: And they asked him saying Why say the scribes that Elias must first come
-
English Explanation: Referencing the prophecy in Malachi 4:5, the disciples ask why the religious scholars (scribes) taught that Elijah (Elias) must return before the Messiah appears. Having just witnessed Elijah on the mountain, they wonder how this timeline fits with Jesus’ impending suffering.
-
Mark 9:12
Verse: And he answered and told them Elias verily cometh first and restoreth all things and how it is written of the Son of man that he must suffer many things and be set at nought
-
English Explanation: Jesus validates the scribes’ scriptural teaching that Elijah comes first to prepare the way. However, He immediately redirects their attention to a harsher truth found in the scriptures: the Promised Messiah must suffer immensely and be rejected by humanity. True restoration involves the path of suffering.
-
Mark 9:13
Verse: But I say unto you That Elias is indeed come and they have done unto him whatsoever they listed as it is written of him
-
English Explanation: Jesus reveals that the prophetic “Elijah” has already arrived in the person of John the Baptist. Just as the prophets predicted opposition, the corrupt authorities treated John with cruelty and eventually executed him, foreshadowing the violent rejection that Jesus Himself would face.
-
Mark 9:14
Verse: And when he came to his disciples he saw a great multitude about them and the scribes questioning with them
-
English Explanation: Returning from the mountain of glory, Jesus, Peter, James, and John step directly into a scene of earthly chaos. A large crowd has gathered around the remaining nine disciples, and the religious leaders are arguing with them, capitalizing on the disciples’ sudden failure.
-
Mark 9:15
Verse: And straightway all the people when they beheld him were greatly amazed and running to him saluted him
-
English Explanation: As soon as the crowd sees Jesus, they are filled with wonder and awe. Whether this amazement was due to some lingering physical radiance from the Transfiguration (similar to Moses descending Sinai) or simply relief at His timely arrival, the crowd runs to greet Him as the ultimate authority.
-
Urdu Explanation:
Mark 9:16
Verse: And he asked the scribes What question ye with them
-
English Explanation: Jesus steps forward as a protector to shield His struggling disciples. He directly confronts the religious scholars, demanding to know the subject of their argument, shifting the focus and pressure away from His disciples onto Himself.
-
Urdu Explanation:
Mark 9:17
Verse: And one of the multitude answered and said Master I have brought unto thee my son which hath a dumb spirit
-
English Explanation: A desperate father speaks up from the crowd, bypassing the scribes. He explains his tragic plight: he brought his son to find Jesus, because the boy is possessed by a demonic entity that has robbed him of his ability to speak.
-
Urdu Explanation:
Mark 9:18
Verse: And wheresoever he taketh him he teareth him and he foameth and gnasheth with his teeth and pineth away and I spake to thy disciples that they should cast him out and they could not
-
English Explanation: The father details the horrific symptoms of the demonic possession, which resemble severe epileptic seizures (convulsions, foaming at the mouth, teeth grinding, and physical deterioration). Crucially, he reveals the source of the public dispute: Jesus’ disciples tried to cast out the demon but failed completely.
-
Mark 9:19
Verse: He answereth him and saith O faithless generation how long shall I be with you how long shall I suffer you bring him unto me
-
English Explanation: Filled with holy grief, Jesus laments the pervasive lack of faith among the people, the scribes, and even His own disciples. His frustration is directed at humanity’s persistent spiritual blindness. Despite His grief, His compassion shines through as He commands, “Bring him to me.”
-
Mark 9:20
Verse: And they brought him unto him and when he saw him straightway the spirit tare him and he fell on the ground and wallowed foaming
-
English Explanation: As the boy is brought into the presence of Jesus, the demonic spirit reacts violently to Christ’s divine authority. Sensing its impending eviction, the demon throws the boy into a terrible convulsion, causing him to roll on the ground foaming at the mouth.
-
Mark 9:21
Verse: And he asked his father How long is it ago since this came unto him And he said Of a child
-
English Explanation: Jesus calmly questions the father about the history of the affliction, not out of a lack of knowledge, but to highlight the severity of the case and to build a personal, empathetic connection with the grieving father. The father reveals that this agonizing torment has lasted since infancy.
-
Mark 9:22
Verse: And ofttimes it hath cast him into the fire and into the waters to destroy him but if thou canst do any thing have compassion on us and help us
-
English Explanation: The father describes the murderous intent of the demon, which repeatedly drives the boy into fire and water to kill him. Exhausted and discouraged by the disciples’ failure, the father’s faith wavers as he pleads with a desperate, conditional clause: “if thou canst do anything…”
-
Mark 9:23
Verse: Jesus said unto him If thou canst believe all things are possible to him that believeth
-
English Explanation: Jesus instantly corrects the father’s phrasing, shifting the focus from His own ability (“if thou canst”) to the father’s faith. Jesus emphasizes that the limitation does not lie in divine power, but in human belief; limitless possibilities are unlocked through genuine faith.
-
Mark 9:24
Verse: And straightway the father of the child cried out and said with tears Lord I believe help thou mine unbelief
-
English Explanation: In one of the most raw and honest confessions in the New Testament, the weeping father acknowledges both his desperate desire to trust Jesus and his internal doubts. He surrenders his flawed, weak faith to Christ, begging Jesus to overcome and heal his remaining skepticism.
-
Mark 9:25
Verse: When Jesus saw that the people came running together he rebuked the foul spirit saying unto him Thou dumb and deaf spirit I charge thee come out of him and enter no more into him
-
English Explanation: Seeing a larger crowd rushing toward them, Jesus acts swiftly to avoid further public spectacle. Exercising absolute, sovereign authority, He speaks directly to the unclean spirit, commanding it not only to depart but banning it from ever re-entering the boy again.
-
Mark 9:26
Verse: And the spirit cried and rent him sore and came out of him and he was as one dead insomuch that many said He is dead
-
English Explanation: The demon throws a final, malicious tantrum, shrieking and convulsing the boy violently before departing. The exit leaves the boy so utterly exhausted and motionless that the surrounding crowd mistakenly presumes he has died.
-
Urdu Explanation:
Mark 9:27
Verse: But Jesus took him by the hand and lifted him up and he arose
-
English Explanation: Displaying profound tenderness and life-giving power, Jesus takes the lifeless boy by the hand. Just as He did with Jairus’ daughter, Christ raises him up, demonstrating complete physical restoration and victory over demonic oppression.
-
Urdu Explanation:
Mark 9:28
Verse: And when he was come into the house his disciples asked him privately Why could not we cast him out
-
English Explanation: Safe from the public eye inside a private house, the bewildered disciples ask Jesus why they failed. They had previously been given authority to cast out demons (Mark 6:7), so this specific failure confused them.
-
Mark 9:29
Verse: And he said unto them This kind can come forth by nothing but by prayer and fasting
-
English Explanation: Jesus reveals that some spiritual battles involve deep-seated demonic strongholds that require absolute reliance on God. The disciples had likely relied on their past successes or treated the authority as a mechanical magic trick, forgetting that continual spiritual discipline (prayer and fasting) is required to channel divine power.
-
Mark 9:30
Verse: And they departed thence and passed through Galilee and he would not that any man should know it
-
English Explanation: Leaving that region, Jesus journeys through Galilee incognito. He intentionally avoids public ministry and miracles at this stage because He desires uninterrupted, quality time to teach and prepare His core disciples for the tragic events awaiting them in Jerusalem.
-
Mark 9:31
Verse: For he taught his disciples and said unto them The Son of man is delivered into the hands of men and they shall kill him and after that he is killed he shall rise the third day
-
English Explanation: Jesus clearly predicts His impending betrayal, execution, and subsequent resurrection for a second time. He outlines the core gospel message, emphasizing that His death is not a tragic accident but a divine necessity that will ultimately end in victory on the third day.
-
Mark 9:32
Verse: But they understood not that saying and were afraid to ask him
-
English Explanation: Despite the clarity of Jesus’ words, the disciples’ preconceived notions of a conquering political king blinded them from grasping the concept of a suffering savior. Furthermore, fear kept them from asking for clarification, perhaps dreading what the answer might mean for their own safety.
-
Mark 9:33
Verse: And he came to Capernaum and being in the house he asked them What was it that ye disputed among yourselves by the way
-
English Explanation: Upon arriving at their home base in Capernaum, Jesus gently but directly exposes the disciples’ internal behavior. He asks them about the argument they had on the road, demonstrating His omniscience regarding their thoughts and actions.
-
Mark 9:34
Verse: But they held their peace for by the way they had disputed among themselves who should be the greatest
-
English Explanation: The disciples remain silent out of sheer shame. While Jesus was speaking about His supreme humbleness and impending death, they were selfishly arguing over who among them would hold the highest positions of power in His upcoming kingdom.
-
Urdu Explanation:
Mark 9:35
Verse: And he sat down and called the twelve and saith unto them If any man desire to be first the same shall be last of all and servant of all
-
English Explanation: Assuming the traditional posture of a Jewish Rabbi taking formal authority, Jesus flips worldly metrics of success upside down. In God’s Kingdom, greatness is not measured by how many people serve you, but by how many people you willingly serve from the lowest position.
-
Mark 9:36
Verse: And he took a child and set him in the midst of them and when he had taken him in his arms he said unto them
-
English Explanation: Jesus uses a brilliant, living object lesson. He places a small child in the center of the group and then tenderly holds the child in His arms. In first-century society, children had no legal status, power, or social prestige; they represented the helpless and vulnerable.
-
Mark 9:37
Verse: Whosoever shall receive one of such children in my name receiveth me and whosoever shall receive me receiveth not me but him that sent me
-
English Explanation: Jesus teaches that welcoming and serving those who cannot offer anything in return (like a child) is the equivalent of welcoming Jesus Himself, and by extension, God the Father. True spiritual maturity values the insignificant over the influential.
-
Mark 9:38
Verse: And John answered him saying Master we saw one casting out devils in thy name and he followeth not us and we forbad him because he followeth not us
-
English Explanation: John interrupts, perhaps feeling convicted by the teaching on inclusivity. He mentions a sectarian action: they stopped an outsider from performing exorcisms in Jesus’ name simply because he did not belong to their immediate, elite group of followers.
-
Mark 9:39
Verse: But Jesus said Forbid him not for there is no man which shall do a miracle in my name that can lightly speak evil of me
-
English Explanation: Jesus corrects John’s exclusive attitude. He commands them not to stop such people, noting that anyone operating under the authority of His name and performing miracles is an ally, not an enemy, and will not easily turn around and slander Him.
-
Urdu Explanation:
Mark 9:40
Verse: For he that is not against us is on our part
-
English Explanation: Jesus lays down a generous principle of spiritual unity: anyone who is not actively working against Christ’s mission is effectively contributing to it. Kingdom work is vast, and God uses diverse people outside of our immediate circles.
-
Mark 9:41
Verse: For whosoever shall give you a cup of water to drink in my name because ye belong to Christ verily I say unto you he shall not lose his reward
-
English Explanation: God notices even the smallest, most mundane act of kindness—like offering a simple cup of water—provided it is done out of love for Christ. No genuine service to God’s people goes unnoticed or unrewarded in eternity.
-
Mark 9:42
Verse: And whosoever shall offend one of these little ones that believe in me it is better for him that a millstone were hanged about his neck and he were cast into the sea
-
English Explanation: Jesus issues a terrifying warning against leading young believers or vulnerable disciples into sin (“offend”). The consequences of damaging someone’s faith are so catastrophic that drowning in the ocean with a massive donkey-drawn millstone tied to one’s neck is a preferable fate.
-
Mark 9:43
Verse: And if thy hand offend thee cut it off it is better for thee to enter into life maimed than having two hands to go into hell into the fire that never shall be quenched
-
English Explanation: Using hyperbole (extreme exaggeration) to convey spiritual urgency, Jesus urges His followers to ruthlessly eliminate anything from their lives that causes them to sin. If an asset as vital as a hand drives a person toward spiritual ruin, it must be severed; eternity is worth any temporal sacrifice.
-
Mark 9:44
Verse: Where their worm dieth not and the fire is not quenched
-
English Explanation: Quoting Isaiah 66:24, Jesus describes hell (Gehenna) as a place of perpetual internal anguish (“worm dieth not”) and external agony (“fire is not quenched”). It emphasizes the eternal, irreversible consequence of rejecting God and clinging to sin.
-
Urdu Explanation:
Mark 9:45
Verse: And if thy foot offend thee cut it off it is better for thee to enter halt into life than having two feet to be cast into hell into the fire that never shall be quenched
-
English Explanation: Jesus repeats the radical warning, this time using the foot. The foot symbolizes where we go and the paths we choose to walk. If your lifestyle, habits, or places of recreation cause spiritual downfall, they must be radically abandoned.
-
Mark 9:46
Verse: Where their worm dieth not and the fire is not quenched
-
English Explanation: This refrain is repeated to underscore the absolute certainty, gravity, and solemn reality of eternal judgment. It leaves no room for complacency regarding sin.
-
Urdu Explanation:
Mark 9:47
Verse: And if thine eye offend thee pluck it out it is better for thee to enter into the kingdom of God with one eye than having two eyes to be cast into hell fire
-
English Explanation: For the third time, Jesus utilizes radical hyperbole, focusing on the eye—the entry point of desire and temptation. Cutting out a physical body part does not fix a sinful heart, but Jesus uses this shocking imagery to command a ruthless, uncompromising boundary against visual and internal lusts.
-
Mark 9:48
Verse: Where their worm dieth not and the fire is not quenched
-
English Explanation: The final repetition of this sobering reality seals Jesus’ discourse on the utter gravity of personal holiness and the extreme cost of unchecked spiritual corruption.
-
Urdu Explanation:
Mark 9:49
Verse: For every one shall be salted with fire and every sacrifice shall be salted with salt
-
English Explanation: This difficult verse links Old Testament sacrificial laws (Leviticus 2:13) with discipleship. Just as salt purified every altar sacrifice, the fire of trials, self-denial, and divine pruning will purify every believer. For believers, fire purges sin; for unbelievers, fire judges sin.
-
Mark 9:50
Verse: Salt is good but if the salt have lost his saltness wherewith will ye season it Have salt in yourselves and have peace one with another
-
English Explanation: Salt preserves food and adds flavor. Jesus tells His disciples that they must maintain their distinct spiritual character (“saltness”) to influence a corrupt world. Losing their distinctiveness renders them useless. Finally, referencing their earlier argument about greatness, He commands them to stay filled with this internal grace and live in peace with one another.
-
