Historical and Biblical Context
Before Genesis 47:7, Joseph’s brothers had returned to Canaan and brought their father Jacob to Egypt. Joseph had instructed them to bring their families and possessions because the famine was still affecting the land.
Jacob had lived many years believing that Joseph was dead. However, he eventually learned that Joseph was alive and serving as a ruler in Egypt. The news was overwhelming for Jacob, and he traveled to Egypt with his household.
Joseph then arranged for his father and brothers to meet Pharaoh. Pharaoh had already given Joseph authority to settle his family in Egypt. The previous verses explain that Joseph’s brothers had told Pharaoh that they were shepherds. Pharaoh permitted them to live in the land of Goshen, a suitable area for their families and livestock.
Genesis 47:7 focuses specifically on the personal meeting between Jacob and Pharaoh.
“And Joseph brought in Jacob his father”
The verse begins by saying that Joseph brought in Jacob his father.
This simple statement carries great emotional significance. Joseph and Jacob had been separated for many years. Jacob had suffered greatly because he believed that Joseph had been lost. Now Joseph had the opportunity not only to see his father again but also to introduce him to Pharaoh.
Joseph’s position in Egypt had changed dramatically. He had become an important administrator responsible for managing food during the famine. Nevertheless, Joseph remained deeply connected to his father.
The phrase “his father” emphasizes the family relationship. Joseph was a powerful official, but he did not forget where he came from.
This can also remind readers that success should not cause a person to forget family, history, or the people who supported them.
“And set him before Pharaoh”
Joseph then set Jacob before Pharaoh.
This means Joseph presented his father to the king of Egypt. Jacob was entering the presence of one of the most powerful rulers of the ancient world.
The meeting demonstrates Joseph’s confidence and respect toward both his father and Pharaoh. Joseph did not hide his family or distance himself from them because of their humble occupation as shepherds.
Instead, he openly presented Jacob before Pharaoh.
There is also a remarkable contrast here. Joseph had once been powerless when he was taken into Egypt. Now he stood in a position where he could bring his own father before Pharaoh.
The circumstances had changed, but Joseph’s story shows that God can work through circumstances that initially appear painful or hopeless.
“And Jacob blessed Pharaoh”
The final words are perhaps the most striking:
“and Jacob blessed Pharaoh.”
Pharaoh was the ruler of Egypt. Jacob was a foreigner and an elderly shepherd. Yet Jacob blessed Pharaoh.
In the biblical context, a blessing could involve speaking words of favor, goodwill, and divine blessing upon another person. Jacob’s action shows that spiritual dignity does not depend upon political power or social status.
Pharaoh possessed authority over Egypt, but Jacob carried a history of God’s covenant promises given to Abraham, Isaac, and Jacob.
The scene therefore creates a striking contrast between earthly authority and spiritual blessing.
Jacob did not need to be the political ruler in order to bless someone who possessed greater earthly power. His identity and relationship with God were more important than his social position.
God’s Providence in Joseph’s Story
Genesis 47:7 should also be understood as part of the larger story of God’s providence.
Joseph had experienced many difficult events. His brothers had sold him, he had been taken to Egypt, and he had experienced imprisonment. Yet God used those circumstances to place Joseph in a position where he could save many lives during the famine.
Now the result of that journey is visible.
Jacob’s family has come to Egypt, Joseph has been reunited with his father, and the family has received a place to live.
The meeting between Jacob and Pharaoh therefore represents more than a royal introduction. It is another stage in the unfolding of God’s purposes for Jacob’s family.
A Lesson About Humility
Another important lesson from this verse is humility.
Joseph was highly honored in Egypt, but he still honored his father. Jacob, meanwhile, stood before Pharaoh without allowing Pharaoh’s power to determine his spiritual identity.
The verse does not describe Jacob boasting about his family or demanding recognition. Instead, he simply blessed Pharaoh.
This teaches an important principle: a person’s value is not determined only by wealth, position, or influence.
Someone may have little earthly power but still have great spiritual significance.
Family Restoration
Genesis 47:7 is also part of a beautiful story of family restoration.
Jacob had experienced years of grief because of Joseph’s disappearance. Joseph had experienced rejection and separation from his family. Their reunion was therefore deeply meaningful.
Joseph’s ability to bring Jacob before Pharaoh demonstrates how completely circumstances had changed.
What had once looked like the end of Joseph’s story became part of the path through which his family was preserved.
The verse therefore encourages readers to consider that difficult periods do not necessarily represent the final chapter of a person’s life.
Spiritual Meaning of Jacob’s Blessing
Jacob’s blessing of Pharaoh can also remind Christians of the importance of being a blessing to others.
God’s people are repeatedly called to live in ways that bring good to those around them. Jacob did not need to possess Pharaoh’s throne in order to speak a blessing over him.
The encounter shows that blessing is not limited to people who hold positions of authority.
A person can bless others through words, kindness, wisdom, prayer, encouragement, generosity, and faithful living.
Jacob’s example also shows that respect does not require surrendering one’s identity. He could stand before Pharaoh respectfully while remaining faithful to his relationship with God.
Lessons from Genesis 47:7
Several lessons can be drawn from this verse:
- God can restore what appears to be lost.
Jacob once believed Joseph was gone, but eventually they were reunited. - Earthly status does not determine spiritual value.
Pharaoh was politically powerful, but Jacob could still bless him. - Success should not make us forget our family.
Joseph continued to honor his father despite his high position. - God can use difficult circumstances for a greater purpose.
Joseph’s painful journey eventually helped preserve his family. - We can be a blessing to others regardless of our position.
Jacob blessed Pharaoh even though Pharaoh was the ruler of Egypt. - God’s promises unfold over time.
The events of Joseph’s life form part of the larger story of God’s covenant with Abraham’s descendants.

“And Joseph brought in Jacob his father, and set him before Pharaoh: and Jacob blessed Pharaoh.” — Genesis 47:7
