Genesis 46:23 — The Son of Dan

The verse says:

“And the sons of Dan; Hushim.”

Dan was one of Jacob’s sons, and his mother was Bilhah, Rachel’s maidservant. Rachel had been unable to have children at that time, so she gave Bilhah to Jacob, and Bilhah became the mother of Dan.

Unlike some of Jacob’s other sons, Dan is recorded here as having only one son: Hushim.

The shortness of this verse reminds us that biblical genealogies do not always provide lengthy descriptions of every person. Sometimes only a name is preserved. Yet the inclusion of Hushim shows that his place in the family history mattered.

Dan’s descendants eventually became associated with the tribe of Dan, one of the tribes of Israel. The tribe would later have its own territory and role among the people of Israel.

The verse therefore helps establish the family line that began with Jacob and continued through his children and grandchildren.

Genesis 46:24 — The Sons of Naphtali

The next verse gives the descendants of Naphtali:

“And the sons of Naphtali; Jahzeel, and Guni, and Jezer, and Shillem.”

Naphtali was also a son of Bilhah. He was Rachel’s second son through Bilhah.

Four sons are listed:

  1. Jahzeel
  2. Guni
  3. Jezer
  4. Shillem

These four names demonstrate that Naphtali’s family had already grown before Jacob’s household settled in Egypt.

The genealogy is important because the descendants of Naphtali would eventually form the tribe of Naphtali. Later biblical history frequently refers to the tribes of Israel, and genealogical records such as this one help establish their origins.

The names in this passage also remind readers that the people of Israel did not suddenly appear as a nation. Their history developed through individual families and generations.

Genesis 46:25 — The Family of Bilhah

Genesis 46:25 explains the relationship between these individuals:

“These are the sons of Bilhah, which Laban gave unto Rachel his daughter, and she bare these unto Jacob: all the souls were seven.”

Bilhah was given by Laban to his daughter Rachel. Rachel was Jacob’s wife. Bilhah therefore became part of Jacob’s household and bore two sons to Jacob: Dan and Naphtali.

The passage counts the descendants associated with Bilhah as seven souls.

This total includes Dan and his son Hushim, together with Naphtali and his four sons: Jahzeel, Guni, Jezer, and Shillem. That produces seven people in this particular family group.

The careful counting of Jacob’s family is part of the larger purpose of Genesis 46. The chapter records the people who went to Egypt and establishes the family structure from which the nation of Israel would grow.

The Importance of Biblical Genealogies

Modern readers sometimes find genealogies difficult to understand because they consist mainly of names. However, genealogies are extremely valuable in Scripture.

First, they preserve family identity. The Bible repeatedly shows the importance of knowing one’s family line.

Second, genealogies demonstrate continuity across generations. Jacob was part of the family of Isaac and Abraham, and his descendants continued that family history.

Third, these records establish the beginnings of the tribes of Israel. Dan and Naphtali became tribal ancestors, and their descendants later appear throughout the Old Testament.

Fourth, genealogies demonstrate that God’s work takes place through real people and real families. The names may seem brief, but each person belonged to a larger story.

A Lesson About Every Person’s Place

One meaningful lesson from Genesis 46:23–25 is that Scripture preserves names even when it does not provide extensive details about the individuals.

Hushim, Jahzeel, Guni, Jezer, and Shillem receive only a small amount of attention in the biblical narrative. Nevertheless, their names are recorded as part of Israel’s history.

This can encourage readers to recognize that a person’s significance is not necessarily measured by how much attention they receive. Families, communities, and nations are built through generations of people whose individual stories may not all be recorded in detail.

The passage therefore encourages respect for family history and reminds us that generations are connected.

God’s Faithfulness Through Generations

Genesis 46 occurs during a major transition. Jacob’s family is leaving Canaan and entering Egypt because of famine. At first glance, this could appear to be merely a response to a difficult economic situation. Yet it is also connected to the larger story that God had been unfolding through Abraham, Isaac, Jacob, and Joseph.

Joseph had risen to an important position in Egypt and was able to provide food during the famine. Jacob’s family came to Egypt, where they would eventually become a large people.

The genealogy in Genesis 46 shows the family at an early stage of this transition. The seven people connected with Bilhah are part of the larger household that would eventually become the nation of Israel.

The passage therefore teaches that God’s purposes can continue through circumstances that appear uncertain or difficult. Famine, migration, separation, and family hardship did not end the story.

Family and Heritage

Another important theme is heritage.

Jacob’s sons did not exist independently from previous generations. Dan and Naphtali were sons of Jacob, and their children belonged to the next generation. The passage carefully identifies Bilhah as their mother and Laban as part of the family background.

This attention to relationships shows the biblical value placed upon remembering where a family came from.

Family heritage can help people understand their identity, responsibilities, traditions, and connections with previous generations. Genesis repeatedly returns to these relationships because the story of God’s people is also a story of families.

Spiritual Reflection

Genesis 46:23–25 encourages readers to appreciate the value of faithfulness across generations.

The passage does not describe a dramatic miracle or a major speech. Instead, it simply records names. Yet these names form part of a much larger biblical story.

This reminds us that God’s work is not always seen only in dramatic events. Sometimes it is visible in the continuation of families, the preservation of relationships, and the passing of faith and history from one generation to another.

Jacob’s family entered Egypt as a household. In later biblical history, the descendants of this household would become the people of Israel.

The genealogy therefore points toward something much larger than the names themselves.
