English Explanation

Revelation 1:6 is a powerful statement about the identity, calling, and spiritual position of believers through Jesus Christ. The verse follows the description of Jesus Christ as the faithful witness, the first begotten of the dead, and the Prince of the kings of the earth. It then declares what Christ has done for His people: He has made them “kings and priests unto God and his Father.”

The phrase “hath made us” points to an action accomplished by Jesus Christ. Believers do not obtain their spiritual standing through personal achievement, wealth, social position, or human authority. Their new relationship with God comes through Christ. The verse therefore emphasizes grace and the work of Jesus rather than human accomplishment.

“Kings and priests”

The expression “kings and priests” describes two important aspects of the believer’s calling.

A king traditionally represents authority, responsibility, and service in a kingdom. In the context of Revelation, the phrase does not simply mean that Christians should seek earthly political power. Rather, it points toward their spiritual identity and participation in Christ’s kingdom. Believers are called to live under the authority of Christ and to represent His kingdom faithfully.

The word priests emphasizes access to God and service to Him. In the Old Testament, priests had particular responsibilities connected with worship and the ministry of God’s people. Revelation uses this language to describe the spiritual calling of believers. Through Christ, they belong to God and are called to worship Him, serve Him, and live as people devoted to His purposes.

Together, “kings and priests” communicates dignity and responsibility. Christians are given a significant spiritual identity, but that identity should produce faithful living rather than pride. Authority in the biblical sense is connected with service, obedience, and responsibility.

“Unto God and his Father”

The purpose of this calling is clearly stated: it is “unto God and his Father.” The believer’s identity is ultimately directed toward God. Spiritual privileges are not given merely for personal status or recognition. They are intended for God’s glory and service.

This phrase also reminds readers that Christian faith is centered on a relationship with God through Jesus Christ. The blessings described in Revelation are connected with the work of Christ and lead believers toward worship and devotion.

“To him be glory and dominion”

The verse then moves from what Christ has done for believers to what belongs to Him: “glory and dominion.”

Glory refers to honor, praise, and recognition of God’s greatness. The proper response to Christ’s work is worship. When believers understand what Christ has accomplished for them, the attention should ultimately return to Him.

Dominion refers to authority and rule. Revelation repeatedly presents Christ as the One who has authority over history and ultimately over every kingdom and power. Human circumstances may change, rulers may rise and fall, and earthly kingdoms may pass away, but Christ’s authority remains.

The final phrase, “for ever and ever,” emphasizes the everlasting nature of this glory and dominion. Revelation looks beyond temporary earthly circumstances toward God’s eternal purposes.

“Amen”

The verse concludes with “Amen.” In biblical usage, Amen expresses agreement, affirmation, and certainty. It is a fitting conclusion because the statement is not presented merely as a human hope. It is a declaration of praise and confidence in God.

Spiritual Lessons from Revelation 1:6

Revelation 1:6 contains several important lessons for Christian life.

First, our spiritual identity comes from Christ. The verse says that He “hath made us.” This directs attention away from human achievement and toward Christ’s work.

Second, believers have a calling to serve God. Being described as priests emphasizes devotion, worship, and service. Christianity is not only about receiving blessings; it also involves living faithfully before God.

Third, spiritual authority should be accompanied by responsibility. The language of kingship should not be interpreted as permission for pride or domination. A believer’s life should reflect the character of Christ through humility, faithfulness, love, and service.

Fourth, God deserves the glory. The verse does not end by celebrating the status of believers. It ends by giving glory and dominion to God. This is an important principle: every spiritual blessing should ultimately lead to worship.

Finally, Christ’s kingdom is eternal. The words “for ever and ever” direct attention beyond temporary circumstances. Revelation presents history from the perspective of God’s ultimate and everlasting authority.

Revelation 1:6
