“I Was in the Spirit”

The phrase “I was in the Spirit” describes John’s spiritual state when he received the revelation. John was physically present on Patmos, but his attention was directed toward a divine revelation.

The expression does not mean that John physically disappeared from the island. Rather, it describes a special spiritual experience in which he received what God was revealing to him.

Throughout Scripture, God sometimes communicated with His servants through visions, dreams, prophetic experiences, and other forms of revelation. In Revelation, John was given a particularly extensive vision concerning Jesus Christ, the churches, events surrounding God’s judgment, and the ultimate triumph of God’s purposes.

John’s words also remind believers that spiritual things require spiritual attention. Human beings can become distracted by ordinary concerns, but God calls His people to listen to His Word and remain attentive to His direction.

“On the Lord’s Day”

John says that this experience occurred “on the Lord’s day.” Christians have traditionally understood this phrase as referring to Sunday, the day associated with the resurrection of Jesus Christ.

The resurrection is central to Christian faith. Jesus Christ rose from the dead, and the early Christian community gave special significance to the first day of the week. The phrase therefore connects John’s revelation with the worship and remembrance of Christ.

The wording also reminds readers that John’s circumstances did not prevent him from being devoted to God. He was on Patmos, separated from many believers, yet he remained spiritually attentive.

This is an encouraging principle. A person’s circumstances do not determine whether they can seek God, worship Him, or listen to His Word. John was in a difficult situation, but God was still able to use him and reveal His message through him.

“I Heard Behind Me”

John then says that he “heard behind me.”

This detail is significant because John did not first describe seeing the source of the voice. He heard it before turning to see what was happening.

The voice came from behind him, immediately demanding his attention. This creates a dramatic transition in the narrative. John was about to encounter a revelation of Jesus Christ unlike anything he had previously experienced.

The passage encourages readers to recognize the importance of listening. Before John describes what he saw, he describes what he heard.

In Scripture, hearing God’s Word is repeatedly associated with responding to Him. Listening is not merely receiving information; it can require obedience and faith.

“A Great Voice”

The voice was not described as ordinary or quiet. John calls it “a great voice.”

The description communicates strength, authority, and unmistakable importance. John was not uncertain that he had heard something significant.

The voice was powerful enough to command attention. In the verses that follow, John learns that he is being instructed to write what he sees and send the message to the seven churches in Asia.

The greatness of the voice therefore corresponds with the importance of the message. Revelation was not presented as John’s personal opinion. John understood himself to be receiving and recording a message connected with Jesus Christ.

“As of a Trumpet”

John compares the voice to the sound of a trumpet.

A trumpet has traditionally been associated with announcements, commands, gatherings, warnings, and important occasions. When a trumpet sounds, people naturally pay attention.

The comparison therefore helps communicate the character of the voice John heard. It was clear, powerful, and commanding.

The imagery is especially appropriate in Revelation because the book contains important announcements concerning God’s purposes and the future. The trumpet-like voice signals that something significant is about to be revealed.

John’s response shows the effect of the voice. In the following verse, he turns to see the voice that spoke with him.

The Importance of Revelation 1:10

Revelation 1:10 serves as a doorway into the visions that follow. The verse moves the reader from John’s earthly circumstances into the revelation he received.

Several important themes can be seen in this short verse:

1. God Can Speak in Difficult Circumstances

John was on Patmos, but his isolation did not prevent God from revealing His message.

This teaches that difficult circumstances do not mean that God has abandoned His people. John could still receive and faithfully communicate God’s message.

2. Spiritual Attention Matters

John says that he heard the voice. His attention was focused enough to recognize the divine message.

Believers are encouraged to remain attentive to Scripture and to the truths God has already revealed.

3. God’s Message Deserves Attention

The voice sounded like a trumpet. This imagery emphasizes that the message was important.

When Scripture teaches something clearly, believers should not treat it as insignificant. God’s Word calls for attention, understanding, and faithful response.

4. Revelation Comes With Responsibility

John was not given the vision simply for his private benefit. He was instructed to write what he saw and communicate it to the churches.

This shows that receiving God’s message carries responsibility. John had to faithfully record and share what had been revealed.

5. Jesus Christ Is Central to Revelation

The Book of Revelation begins by identifying itself as the revelation of Jesus Christ. Revelation 1:10 begins the dramatic vision in which John receives a message concerning Christ and His churches.

The purpose of the book is therefore not merely to satisfy curiosity about future events. It ultimately points readers toward Jesus Christ, His authority, His relationship with His people, and God’s final purposes.

Spiritual Lessons From Revelation 1:10

Revelation 1:10 provides several practical lessons for Christian life.

First, believers should make time to focus on God rather than allowing everyday distractions to control their attention.

Second, worship should involve attentive listening to God’s Word. John was spiritually attentive when the great voice came to him.

Third, difficult circumstances should not automatically be interpreted as evidence that God is absent. John’s location on Patmos became the setting in which he received an extraordinary revelation.

Finally, God’s Word should be approached with reverence. The trumpet-like voice illustrates the authority and importance of the message John was about to receive.

“I was in the Spirit on the Lord’s day, and heard behind me a great voice, as of a trumpet.”

“I Was in the Spirit”

“On the Lord’s Day”

“I Heard Behind Me”

“A Great Voice”

“As of a Trumpet”
