English Explanation

Matthew 1:6 is part of the genealogy of Jesus Christ recorded at the beginning of the Gospel of Matthew. This verse connects Jesse, David, and Solomon, showing the royal line through which Jesus Christ was born. The genealogy demonstrates that God’s plan worked through generations of people and that the promised Savior came through a carefully preserved family line.

The verse begins with the words, “And Jesse begat David the king.” Jesse was the father of David. Although Jesse was not a famous ruler, his son David became one of the greatest kings in biblical history. David was chosen by God while he was still a young shepherd. His life shows that God can choose and use people who may appear ordinary in the eyes of the world.

David became the king of Israel and established a strong kingdom. His name became closely connected with God’s promises. The Bible records that God made a covenant with David, promising that his royal line would continue. This promise became an important part of the expectation of the coming Messiah.

The second part of the verse says, “and David the king begat Solomon.” Solomon was David’s son and became the next king of Israel. Solomon is known for his wisdom, his peaceful reign, and the building of the temple in Jerusalem. His life represents both great blessings and human weaknesses. Although he was gifted with wisdom, he also faced spiritual challenges later in his life.

The verse then adds a surprising detail: “of her that had been the wife of Urias.” Matthew does not simply name Solomon’s mother; instead, he refers to her connection with Uriah. This is a reference to Bathsheba, whose story is recorded in the Old Testament. David’s relationship with Bathsheba involved serious sin, including the death of Uriah, her husband.

By mentioning Uriah, Matthew highlights an important spiritual truth: God’s work in history was not limited to perfect people. The genealogy of Jesus includes people with failures, struggles, and difficult pasts. This shows God’s mercy and His ability to bring redemption even through broken human situations.

The inclusion of David, Solomon, and Bathsheba also teaches humility. David was a great king, but he was also a person who needed forgiveness. His story reminds believers that greatness does not remove the need for repentance and dependence on God.

Matthew’s purpose in recording this genealogy was to show that Jesus Christ is connected to the royal line of David. The Messiah was expected to come from David’s family, and this verse confirms that connection. The genealogy is not just a list of names; it is a record of God’s faithfulness throughout generations.

This verse also teaches that God’s plans are greater than human mistakes. The history behind David and Bathsheba included failure and sorrow, but God continued His purpose. Through this family line came Jesus Christ, bringing hope, salvation, and restoration.
