1 Kings Chapter

Verse-by-Verse Commentary & Explanation

1 Kings 3:6

  • Verse: And Solomon said Thou hast shewed unto thy servant David my father great mercy according as he walked before thee in truth and in righteousness and in uprightness of heart with thee and thou hast kept for him this great kindness that thou hast given him a son to sit on his throne as it is this day

  • English Explanation: Solomon begins his prayer by acknowledging God’s faithfulness and mercy to his father, King David. He recognizes that David’s blessings were a result of a faithful walk with God in truth and righteousness. Solomon views his own position on the throne not as personal merit, but as the fulfillment of God’s kind promise to David.

1 Kings 3:7

  • Verse: And now O LORD my God thou hast made thy servant king instead of David my father and I am but a little child I know not how to go out or come in

  • English Explanation: Showing profound humility, Solomon expresses his feelings of inadequacy before God. The phrase “little child” is not literal, as he was a young adult, but it signifies his lack of political and leadership experience. The idiom “know not how to go out or come in” refers to managing the basic duties of daily leadership and military command.

1 Kings 3:8

  • Verse: And thy servant is in the midst of thy people which thou hast chosen a great people that cannot be numbered nor counted for multitude

  • English Explanation: Solomon highlights the immense weight of his responsibility. He notes that he is ruling over God’s chosen nation, which has grown so large that it fulfills the promise made to Abraham regarding an innumerable population. He realizes that governing such a vast multitude requires a capacity far greater than his own natural abilities.

1 Kings 3:9

  • Verse: Give therefore thy servant an understanding heart to judge thy people that I may discern between good and bad for who is able to judge this thy so great a people

  • English Explanation: This is the core request of Solomon’s prayer. Instead of asking for personal gain, he requests a “hearing or understanding heart” (Hebrew: shome’a). He wants the ability to listen closely to God and to people so that he can properly distinguish right from wrong and govern the nation with true equity.

1 Kings 3:10

  • Verse: And the speech pleased the Lord that Solomon had asked this thing

  • English Explanation: God is deeply pleased with Solomon’s request because it reflects an unselfish spirit and a desire to align with the divine purpose. It shows that Solomon prioritized his duties as God’s representative over personal ambition, power, or wealth.

1 Kings 3:11

  • Verse: And God said unto him Because thou hast asked this thing and hast not asked for thyself long life neither hast asked riches for thyself nor hast asked the life of thine enemies but hast asked for thyself understanding to discern judgment

  • English Explanation: God acknowledges the typical requests that kings of that era usually made, such as long life, vast riches, or the destruction of military adversaries. By intentionally bypassing these selfish motives, Solomon showed a rare character focused entirely on administrative justice and spiritual wisdom.

1 Kings 3:12

  • Verse: Behold I have done according to thy words lo I have given thee a wise and an understanding heart so that there was none like thee before thee neither after thee shall any arise like unto thee

  • English Explanation: God grants the petition, bestowing upon Solomon unparalleled wisdom. This wisdom was not just academic or intellectual knowledge, but a deep spiritual insight and practical discernment to navigate complex human situations. He is promised a unique status in human history for his exceptional mind.

1 Kings 3:13

  • Verse: And I have also given thee that which thou hast not asked both riches and honour so that there shall not be any among the kings like unto thee all thy days

  • English Explanation: This verse demonstrates the biblical principle that when a person seeks God’s kingdom and righteousness first, secondary blessings are added. Because Solomon valued spiritual discernment above material wealth, God blessed him with unmatched riches and global honor as well.

1 Kings 3:14

  • Verse: And if thou wilt walk in my ways to keep my statutes and my commandments as thy father David did walk then I will lengthen thy days

  • English Explanation: While wisdom and riches were given unconditionally, the promise of longevity (long life) was conditional. Solomon had to remain obedient to God’s laws, walking in integrity just as his father David did. It serves as a reminder that spiritual gifts do not remove the necessity of personal obedience.

1 Kings 3:15

  • Verse: And Solomon awoke and behold it was a dream And he came to Jerusalem and stood before the ark of the covenant of the LORD and offered up burnt offerings and offered peace offerings and made a feast to all his servants

  • English Explanation: Upon waking from this profound prophetic dream, Solomon immediately travels to Jerusalem to worship. Standing before the Ark of the Covenant, he offers sacrifices expressing gratitude and dedication. The public feast for his servants marks a celebration of the divine covenant established with him.

1 Kings 3:16

  • Verse: Then came there two women that were harlots unto the king and stood before him

  • English Explanation: This verse introduces the first practical test of Solomon’s newly granted wisdom. The inclusion of two marginalized women (prostitutes) shows that the royal court was accessible even to the lowest members of society, highlighting the democratic nature of biblical justice.

1 Kings 3:17

  • Verse: And the one woman said O my lord I and this woman dwell in one house and I was delivered of a child with her in the house

  • English Explanation: The first woman presents the background of the case. They lived together alone, and she gave birth to a baby boy. The absence of other witnesses sets up a complex legal dilemma where it is simply one person’s word against another’s.

1 Kings 3:18

  • Verse: And it came to pass the third day after that I was delivered that this woman was delivered also and we were together there was no stranger with us in the house save we two in the house

  • English Explanation: The woman explains that three days later, the other woman also gave birth to a boy. She emphasizes again that they were completely alone in the house, meaning there were no external witnesses, midwives, or neighbors to verify what took place during the night.

1 Kings 3:19

  • Verse: And this woman’s child died in the night because she overlaid it

  • Explanation: The tragedy is revealed: one of the babies died during the night because the mother accidentally rolled over him while sleeping, causing suffocation. This detail shows the harsh reality of infant mortality and accidents in the ancient world.

1 Kings 3:20

  • Verse: And she arose at midnight and took my son from beside me while thine handmaid slept and laid it in her bosom and laid her dead child in my bosom

  • English Explanation: The accuser claims that the grieving mother secretly switched the infants in the middle of the night. She alleges that the woman took the living child away and replaced him with the body of the deceased baby while she was asleep.

1 Kings 3:21

  • Verse: And when I rose in the morning to give my child suck behold it was dead but when I had considered it in the morning behold it was not my son which I did bear

  • English Explanation: The first woman explains that when she woke up at dawn to nurse her child, she found a dead infant. However, upon examining the features of the baby in the clear morning light, her maternal instinct and close observation told her with certainty that this was not her biological son.

1 Kings 3:22

  • Verse: And the other woman said Nay but the living is my son and the dead is thy son And this said No but the dead is thy son and the living is my son Thus they spake before the king

  • English Explanation: The second woman completely denies the accusation, claiming the opposite. The situation becomes a chaotic verbal dispute in front of the throne, with both women making identical claims over the single living child. Without physical evidence or DNA testing, a normal judge would be completely stuck.

1 Kings 3:23

  • Verse: Then said the king The one saith This is my son that liveth and thy son is the dead and the other saith Nay but thy son is the dead and my son is the living

  • English Explanation: Solomon summarizes the entire case out loud. By repeating their arguments exactly, he ensures clarity in the courtroom and shows that he has paid close attention to both sides. He establishes the legal core of the issue before introducing his unique psychological tactic.

1 Kings 3:24

  • Verse: And the king said Bring me a sword And they brought a sword before the king

  • English Explanation: Solomon makes a shocking demand by calling for a weapon of execution. This dramatic action causes an immediate shift in the courtroom’s energy. It sets the stage for a test of raw human emotion rather than legal argumentation.

1 Kings 3:25

  • Verse: And the king said Divide the living child in two and give half to the one and half to the other

  • English Explanation: Solomon proposes a literal division of the child. Logically and legally, this seems absurd and cruel. However, Solomon never intended to harm the baby; he used this extreme measure as a psychological tool to uncover the deep-seated maternal instincts of the true mother.

1 Kings 3:26

  • Verse: Then spake the woman whose the living child was unto the king for her bowels yearned upon her son and she said O my lord give her the living child and in no wise slay it But the other said Let it be neither mine nor thine but divide it

  • English Explanation: The tactic works perfectly. The biological mother, driven by intense love and compassion (“bowels yearned”), is willing to give up her rights and lose her child to the imposter just to save his life. Conversely, the fake mother shows a bitter, spiteful attitude, preferring the destruction of the baby over losing the dispute.

1 Kings 3:27

  • Verse: Then the king answered and said Give her the living child and in no wise slay it she is the mother thereof

  • English Explanation: Solomon delivers his final verdict based on the raw emotional evidence. He correctly identifies the woman who protected the baby’s life as the real mother. He stops any execution and orders that the baby be handed over safely to her, solving a seemingly impossible case.

1 Kings 3:28

  • Verse: And all Israel heard of the judgment which the king had judged and they feared the king for they saw that the wisdom of God was in him to do judgment

  • English Explanation: The news of this brilliant decision spreads quickly across the entire nation. The citizens develop a profound respect and awe (“feared”) for Solomon’s authority. They realize that his exceptional understanding is not merely human intelligence, but a supernatural endowment from God intended to maintain justice in society.
