2 Chronicles Chapter

Verse-by-Verse Commentary & Explanation

2 Chronicles 18:8

Verse: And the king of Israel called for one of his officers and said Fetch quickly Micaiah the son of Imla

English Explanation: King Ahab of Israel is impatient. Yielding to King Jehoshaphat’s demand for a true prophet of the LORD, Ahab summons Micaiah. However, his choice of words (“Fetch quickly”) reveals his irritation. Ahab prefers the pleasing lies of his 400 court prophets over the uncomfortable truth God delivers through Micaiah.

2 Chronicles 18:9

Verse: And the king of Israel and Jehoshaphat king of Judah sat either of them on his throne clothed in their robes and they sat in a void place at the entering in of the gate of Samaria and all the prophets prophesied before them

English Explanation: This verse sets a dramatic worldly stage. Two powerful kings sit on their thrones in full royal attire at the gateway of Samaria—the hub of public judgment. Before them stands a massive chorus of 400 prophets performing in unison, creating an intense atmosphere of political and psychological pressure to go to war.

2 Chronicles 18:10

Verse: And Zedekiah the son of Chenaanah had made him horns of iron and said Thus saith the LORD With these thou shalt push Syria until they be consumed

English Explanation: Zedekiah acts as the ringleader of the false prophets. He uses a dramatic, physical prop—iron horns—to symbolize unstoppable military power. He manipulates language by using the holy name of the LORD (Yahweh) to falsely validate his prediction that Ahab will completely crush the Syrian army.

2 Chronicles 18:11

Verse: And all the prophets prophesied so saying Go up to Ramoth-gilead and prosper for the LORD shall deliver it into the hand of the king

English Explanation: Peer pressure and groupthink take over. Encouraged by Zedekiah’s theatrical display, all 400 prophets chant the exact same message. They assure Ahab of guaranteed victory and divine endorsement at Ramoth-gilead, telling the king exactly what his itching ears want to hear.

2 Chronicles 18:12

Verse: And the messenger that went to call Micaiah spake to him saying Behold the words of the prophets declare good to the king with one assent let thy word therefore I pray thee be like one of theirs and speak thou good

English Explanation: The royal messenger tries to coach Micaiah on the way to the palace. He warns Micaiah that there is total unanimity among the 400 prophets. The messenger begs Micaiah not to break the peace and to simply conform to the political consensus by delivering a positive, encouraging message to the king.

2 Chronicles 18:13

Verse: And Micaiah said As the LORD liveth even what my God saith that will I speak

English Explanation: Micaiah’s response stands as a monumental declaration of prophetic integrity. He completely rejects the messenger’s advice and binds himself to an oath: he will only speak what God reveals to him, regardless of personal cost, danger, or political isolation.

2 Chronicles 18:14

Verse: And when he was come to the king the king said unto him Micaiah shall we go to Ramoth-gilead to battle or shall I forbear And he said Go ye up and prosper and they shall be delivered into your hand

English Explanation: When asked for his counsel, Micaiah responds with heavy, biting sarcasm. He mirrors the exact words of the false prophets (“Go ye up, and prosper”). His tone is intentionally mocking, signaling to Ahab that the king doesn’t truly want God’s truth, but rather an echo chamber.

2 Chronicles 18:15

Verse: And the king said to him How many times shall I adjure thee that thou say nothing but the truth to me in the name of the LORD

English Explanation: Ahab easily detects Micaiah’s sarcasm. Ironically, even though Ahab hates the truth, his conscience forces him to demand it in this critical moment. He commands Micaiah under a solemn oath to drop the mockery and speak only what Yahweh has actually said.

2 Chronicles 18:16

Verse: And then he said I did see all Israel scattered upon the mountains as sheep that have no shepherd and the LORD said These have no master let them return therefore every man to his house in peace

English Explanation: With the sarcasm dropped, Micaiah delivers a devastating prophetic vision. He sees Israel’s army scattered across mountains like sheep without a shepherd. This metaphor explicitly predicts that King Ahab (the shepherd/master) will die in the upcoming battle, leaving his leaderless army to return home.

2 Chronicles 18:17

Verse: And the king of Israel said to Jehoshaphat Did I not tell thee that he would not prophesy good unto me but evil

English Explanation: Instead of humbling himself or repenting upon hearing God’s warning, Ahab turns to Jehoshaphat to complain. He blames the prophet rather than his own wicked actions, viewing Micaiah’s words as a personal vendetta (“prophesy… evil”) rather than divine truth.

2 Chronicles 18:18

Verse: Again he said Therefore hear the word of the LORD I saw the LORD sitting upon his throne and all the host of heaven standing on his right hand and on his left

English Explanation: Micaiah doubles down, raising the stakes by pulling back the curtain on the cosmic realm. He counters the earthly scene of Ahab and Jehoshaphat on their temporary thrones (v. 9) by describing the ultimate sovereign reality: Yahweh sitting on His eternal heavenly throne, surrounded by the celestial hosts.

2 Chronicles 18:19

Verse: And the LORD said Who shall entice Ahab king of Israel that he may go up and fall at Ramoth-gilead And one spake saying after this manner and another saying after that manner

English Explanation: Micaiah reveals that Ahab’s doom has already been decreed in the divine council. God allows a deliberation on how to entice the stubborn, unrepentant Ahab to his rightful judgment at Ramoth-gilead. This shows that even the schemes of kings are entirely subject to God’s sovereign will.

2 Chronicles 18:20

Verse: Then there came out a spirit and stood before the LORD and said I will entice him And the LORD said unto him Wherewith

English Explanation: A specific spirit steps forward in the vision, volunteering to act as the agent of enticement. God questions the spirit’s methodology (“Wherewith?”). This interactive vision illustrates that God is actively orchestrating the exposure and downfall of Ahab’s corrupt regime.

2 Chronicles 18:21

Verse: And he said I will go out and be a lying spirit in the mouth of all his prophets And the LORD said Thou shalt entice him and thou shalt also prevail go out and do even so

English Explanation: The spirit reveals the plan: to infect Ahab’s 400 prophets with a strong delusion, operating as a “lying spirit” in their mouths. God grants permission. Because Ahab consistently rejected the truth, God justly gives him over to the lies he so deeply desired to believe, sealing his fate.

2 Chronicles 18:22

Verse: Now therefore behold the LORD hath put a lying spirit in the mouth of these thy prophets and the LORD hath spoken evil against thee

English Explanation: Micaiah delivers the raw truth directly to Ahab’s face: the 400 prophets are possessed by a lying spirit allowed by God. Micaiah exposes their unanimous consensus as a divine trap designed to bring about Ahab’s ruin due to his persistent wickedness.

2 Chronicles 18:23

Verse: Then Zedekiah the son of Chenaanah came near and smote Micaiah upon the cheek and said Which way went the Spirit of the LORD from me to speak unto thee

English Explanation: Infuriated by being exposed as a fraud, Zedekiah physically assaults Micaiah by slapping him. He mocks Micaiah with a sarcastic question, asking how the Spirit of God could have possibly bypassed him (the popular leader) to speak to an isolated outcast like Micaiah.

2 Chronicles 18:24

Verse: And Micaiah said Behold thou shalt see on that day when thou shalt go into an inner chamber to hide thyself

English Explanation: Micaiah does not retaliate physically. Instead, he issues a precise prophecy regarding Zedekiah’s future. He tells the false prophet that the ultimate verification of the truth will come when Ahab dies, forcing Zedekiah to flee in terror and hide in an inner room to escape the people’s wrath.

2 Chronicles 18:25

Verse: Then the king of Israel said Take ye Micaiah and carry him back to Amon the governor of the city and to Joash the king’s son

English Explanation: Ahab rejects the final divine warning. He orders his guards to arrest Micaiah and hand him over to Amon, the city governor, and Joash, the prince. This command signals Ahab’s total hardening of heart and his determination to press on with his disastrous war plans.

2 Chronicles 18:26

Verse: And say Thus saith the king Put this fellow in the prison and feed him with bread of affliction and with water of affliction until I return in peace

English Explanation: Ahab orders that Micaiah be put in solitary confinement on a starvation diet (“bread and water of affliction”). Ahab’s words, “until I return in peace,” show his arrogant belief that he can defy God’s word, survive the battle, and punish Micaiah afterward.

2 Chronicles 18:27

Verse: And Micaiah said If thou certainly return in peace then hath not the LORD spoken by me And he said Hearken all ye people

English Explanation: Micaiah leaves his case in the hands of the ultimate Umpire. He stakes his entire validity as a prophet on Ahab’s death: if Ahab returns alive, Micaiah admits he is a false prophet. He then turns to the crowd, shouting, “Hearken, all ye people,” calling the entire nation to witness this divine test.

2 Chronicles 18:28

Verse: So the king of Israel and Jehoshaphat the king of Judah went up to Ramoth-gilead

English Explanation: Despite the explicit, terrifying warnings from a true prophet of God, both kings choose to march out to battle at Ramoth-gilead. Ahab is blinded by his stubborn arrogance, and Jehoshaphat is compromised by his dangerous political alliance with a wicked king.

2 Chronicles 18:29

Verse: And the king of Israel said unto Jehoshaphat I will disguise myself and will go to the battle but put thou on thy robes So the king of Israel disguised himself and they went to the battle

Explanation: Ahab displays incredible cowardice and hypocrisy. Deep down, he fears Micaiah’s prophecy, so he disguises himself as a common soldier while deceptively convincing Jehoshaphat to wear his full royal robes. Ahab attempts to trick God’s judgment by making Jehoshaphat the primary target for the enemy.

2 Chronicles 18:30

Verse: Now the king of Syria had commanded the captains of the chariots that were with him saying Fight ye not with small or great save only with the king of Israel

English Explanation: The focus shifts to the Syrian tactical strategy. The king of Syria orders his chariot commanders to bypass all ordinary soldiers and focus their entire military strength on a single target: assassinating the king of Israel. This sets the stage for Ahab’s inevitable, divinely ordained fate.

2 Chronicles 18:31

Verse: And it came to pass when the captains of the chariots saw Jehoshaphat that they said It is the king of Israel Therefore they compassed about him to fight but Jehoshaphat cried out and the LORD helped him and God moved them to depart from him

English Explanation: Ahab’s trap almost works. The Syrian captains mistake Jehoshaphat for Ahab because of his royal robes and surround him to kill him. In desperate terror, Jehoshaphat cries out to God. In an act of pure grace, the LORD intervenes, revealing to the Syrians that he is not Ahab, and miraculously moves them away to preserve his life.
