2 Chronicles 24:6–24 — Verse-by-Verse Commentary
2 Chronicles 24:6
Verse: And the king called for Jehoiada the chief and said unto him Why hast thou not required of the Levites to bring in out of Judah and out of Jerusalem the collection according to the commandment of Moses the servant of the LORD and of the congregation of Israel for the tabernacle of witness?
English Explanation
King Joash confronts Jehoiada the High Priest regarding the delay in collecting the temple tax. This tax, originally instituted by Moses in the wilderness, was meant for the upkeep of the Tabernacle. Joash shows an early zeal for God’s house, questioning why the spiritual leaders (the Levites) had been sluggish in gathering the resources needed for urgent repairs.
2 Chronicles 24:7
Verse: For the sons of Athaliah that wicked woman had broken up the house of God and also all the dedicated things of the house of the LORD did they bestow upon Baalim
English Explanation
This verse provides the tragic context for why the temple needed repairs. Athaliah, the wicked queen mother who had usurped the throne, and her sons had systematically vandalized the Temple of the Lord. They did not just neglect it; they actively broke into it and stolen the dedicated, holy vessels to use them in the worship of the pagan god Baal.
2 Chronicles 24:8
Verse: And at the king’s commandment they made a chest and set it without at the gate of the house of the LORD
English Explanation
To solve the collection problem and bypass the administrative delays of the Levites, King Joash commands that a special wooden chest be made. They placed this collection box outside the gate of the Temple. This historical innovation allowed people to give their contributions directly, creating transparency and renewing trust.
2 Chronicles 24:9
Verse: And they made a proclamation through Judah and Jerusalem to bring in to the LORD the collection that Moses the servant of God laid upon Israel in the wilderness
English Explanation
A royal decree is sent throughout the entire kingdom of Judah and its capital, Jerusalem. The proclamation reminds the citizens of their ancient, covenantal obligation—the tax instituted by Moses. It was a call to national revival centered on restoring the true worship of God.
2 Chronicles 24:10
Verse: And all the princes and all the people rejoiced and brought in and cast into the chest until they had made an end
English Explanation
The response from both the leadership (“princes”) and the common citizens is overwhelmingly positive. Instead of viewing the collection as a heavy financial burden, the people rejoiced at the opportunity to give. They filled the chest repeatedly until the financial needs for the structural restoration were fully met.
2 Chronicles 24:11
Verse: Now it came to pass that at what time the chest was brought unto the king’s office by the hand of the Levites and when they saw that there was much money the king’s scribe and the high priest’s officer came and emptied the chest and took it and carried it to his place again Thus they did day by day and gathered money in abundance
English Explanation
A systematic audit process is established to handle the vast amount of money. The Levites brought the heavy chest to the king’s oversight office. Then, representatives from both the civil government (the king’s scribe) and the religious leadership (the high priest’s officer) emptied and counted the money together before returning the chest. This dual-accountability system resulted in an abundance of funds.
2 Chronicles 24:12
Verse: And the king and Jehoiada gave it to such as did the work of the service of the house of the LORD and hired masons and carpenters to repair the house of the LORD and also such as wrought iron and brass to mend the house of the LORD
English Explanation
The collected funds are immediately put to practical use. Joash and Jehoiada distribute the money directly to the project overseers, who hire professional craftsmen—masons, carpenters, blacksmiths, and coppersmiths. The focus is entirely on structural integrity and repairing the physical damage inflicted during Athaliah’s reign.
2 Chronicles 24:13
Verse: So the workmen wrought and the work was perfected by them and they set the house of God in his state and strengthened it
English Explanation
The hired laborers work with diligence and integrity. Under their skilled hands, the restoration moves forward efficiently. The Temple is successfully restored to its original, grand proportions and structural soundness, undoing decades of pagan vandalism.
2 Chronicles 24:14
Verse: And when they had finished it they brought the rest of the money before the king and Jehoiada whereof were made vessels for the house of the LORD even vessels to minister and to offer withal and spoons and vessels of gold and silver And they offered burnt offerings in the house of the LORD continually all the days of Jehoiada
English Explanation
Because the project was managed honestly, there was a financial surplus. This remaining money is used to replace the gold and silver worship vessels that had been stolen for Baal worship. With the temple restored and vessels replaced, regular, daily burnt offerings resume, continuing throughout the remainder of Jehoiada’s godly life.
2 Chronicles 24:15
Verse: But Jehoiada waxed old and was full of days when he died an hundred and thirty years old was he when he died
English Explanation
Jehoiada, the godly high priest who had saved Joash’s life as an infant and guided the nation back to God, passes away at the remarkable age of 130. His long life is framed as a divine blessing for his profound faithfulness and spiritual leadership.
2 Chronicles 24:16
Verse: And they buried him in the city of David among the kings because he had done good in Israel both toward God and toward his house
English Explanation
In an unprecedented honor for someone who was not a descendant of King David, Jehoiada is buried in the royal tombs (“the city of David among the kings”). This extraordinary tribute recognized his immense contribution to saving the Davidic royal line, restoring true worship, and serving God’s temple.
2 Chronicles 24:17
Verse: Now after the death of Jehoiada came the princes of Judah and made obeisance to the king Then the king hearkened unto them
English Explanation
A critical, tragic turning point occurs after Jehoiada’s death. With his godly mentor gone, Joash is vulnerable. The corrupt princes of Judah flatter the king, paying him false homage. Lacking deep-rooted personal conviction, Joash listens to their worldly, destructive advice.
2 Chronicles 24:18
Verse: And they left the house of the LORD God of their fathers and served groves and idols and wrath came upon Judah and Jerusalem for this their trespass
English Explanation
The consequences of Joash listening to the corrupt princes are immediate. The leadership and the people abandon the newly restored Temple of Yahweh and turn back to worshipping Asherah poles (“groves”) and pagan idols. This betrayal and spiritual adultery provoke the righteous anger and wrath of God against the nation.
2 Chronicles 24:19
Verse: Yet he sent prophets to them to bring them again unto the LORD and they testified against them but they would not give ear
English Explanation
Even in the face of their betrayal, God demonstrates incredible mercy. Before sending judgment, He sends prophets to warn them and call them back to the covenant. Tragically, the king, the princes, and the people harden their hearts and completely ignore the divine warnings.
2 Chronicles 24:20
Verse: And the Spirit of God came upon Zechariah the son of Jehoiada the priest which stood above the people and said unto them Thus saith God Why transgress ye the commandments of the LORD that ye cannot prosper? because ye have forsaken the LORD he hath also forsaken you
English Explanation
The Holy Spirit empowers Zechariah, the son of the late High Priest Jehoiada, to deliver a direct message. Standing in an elevated position in the temple court, Zechariah confronts the people with a logical and spiritual truth: their disobedience prevents their prosperity, and because they have abandoned God, God has abandoned them to their enemies.
2 Chronicles 24:21
Verse: And they conspired against him and stoned him with stones at the commandment of the king in the court of the house of the LORD
English Explanation
Instead of repenting, the people and leaders form a conspiracy against Zechariah. In an act of shocking wickedness, King Joash—forgetting his debt to Zechariah’s father—orders Zechariah to be stoned to death. Horrifically, this martyrdom takes place right inside the sacred courtyard of the Temple they had recently repaired.
2 Chronicles 24:22
Verse: Thus Joash the king remembered not the kindness which Jehoiada his father had done to him but slew his son And when he died he said The LORD look upon it and require it
English Explanation
This verse highlights the deep ingratitude of King Joash. He completely forgot how Jehoiada had raised him like a father and secured his crown, choosing instead to execute Jehoiada’s son. As Zechariah dies, he utters a prophetic prayer: “The LORD look upon it and require it,” calling for divine justice to avenge his innocent blood.
2 Chronicles 24:23
Verse: And it came to pass at the end of the year that the host of Syria came up against him and they came to Judah and Jerusalem and destroyed all the princes of the people from among the people and sent all the spoil of them unto the king of Damascus
English Explanation
Divine justice strikes swiftly. Within a year of Zechariah’s murder, the Syrian army invades Judah. The Syrians target and execute the corrupt princes who had originally led Joash into idolatry, and they plunder the wealth of Jerusalem, sending the spoils back to Damascus.
2 Chronicles 24:24
Verse: For the army of the Syrians came with a small company of men and the LORD delivered a very great host into their hand because they had forsaken the LORD God of their fathers So they executed judgment against Joash
English Explanation
The spiritual reality behind the military defeat is revealed: the Syrian army was small, while Judah’s army was massive. Under normal circumstances, Judah should have won easily. However, because Judah had forsaken God, Yahweh handed them over to the invaders. The military defeat was, in reality, God’s execution of righteous judgment directly against King Joash for his apostasy and murder.
