Verse-by-Verse Commentary

2 Kings 8:13

Verse: And Hazael said But what is thy servant a dog that he should do this great thing? And Elisha answered The LORD hath shewed me that thou shalt be king over Syria.

  • English Explanation: Hazael reacts with feigned or genuine shock to Elisha’s prophecy that he will commit atrocities. Elisha confirms that God has revealed Hazael’s future as the King of Syria.

  • Urdu Explanation: حزائیل نے حیرت کا اظہار کیا کہ وہ ایسی گھناؤنی حرکتیں کیسے کر سکتا ہے؟ الیشع نے جواب دیا کہ خداوند نے مجھ پر ظاہر کیا ہے کہ تو شام کا بادشاہ بنے گا۔

2 Kings 8:14

Verse: So he departed from Elisha and came to his master who said to him What said Elisha to thee? And he answered He told me that thou shouldest surely recover.

  • English Explanation: Hazael returns to King Ben-hadad but lies by omission, mentioning only the recovery and hiding the prophecy of his own kingship.

  • Urdu Explanation: حزائیل نے اپنے مالک (بادشاہ) سے جھوٹ بولا اور صرف یہ بتایا کہ وہ ٹھیک ہو جائے گا، جبکہ اپنی بادشاہت کی بات چھپا لی۔

2 Kings 8:15

Verse: And it came to pass on the morrow that he took a thick cloth and dipped it in water and spread it on his face so that he died and Hazael reigned in his stead.

  • English Explanation: Hazael murders the king by suffocation using a wet cloth, fulfilling the prophecy of his ascension through treachery.

  • Urdu Explanation: اگلے دن حزائیل نے ایک موٹا کپڑا پانی میں بھگو کر بادشاہ کے منہ پر ڈال دیا جس سے وہ مر گیا، اور حزائیل اس کی جگہ بادشاہ بن گیا۔

2 Kings 8:16–18

Verse: And in the fifth year of Joram the son of Ahab king of Israel Jehoshaphat being then king of Judah Jehoram the son of Jehoshaphat king of Judah began to reign… And he walked in the way of the kings of Israel… for the daughter of Ahab was his wife…

  • English Explanation: Jehoram of Judah begins his reign. Unfortunately, he follows the wicked ways of Israel because he married Athaliah, Ahab’s daughter.

  • Urdu Explanation: یہوداہ کے بادشاہ یہورام نے اسرائیل کے بادشاہوں کی پیروی کی کیونکہ اس کی بیوی اخی اب کی بیٹی تھی، جس نے اسے برائی کی طرف مائل کیا۔

2 Kings 8:19

Verse: Yet the LORD would not destroy Judah for David his servant’s sake as he promised him to give him alway a light and to his children.

  • English Explanation: Despite Jehoram’s sin, God spares Judah from total destruction to honor His eternal covenant with King David.

  • Urdu Explanation: یہورام کے گناہوں کے باوجود، خدا نے داؤد سے کیے گئے عہد کی خاطر یہوداہ کو ہلاک نہ کیا۔

2 Kings 8:20–22

Verse: In his days Edom revolted from under the hand of Judah… Yet Edom revolted… Then Libnah revolted at the same time.

  • English Explanation: Because of the king’s unfaithfulness, Judah begins to lose political power, with Edom and Libnah successfully rebelling against their authority.

  • Urdu Explanation: بادشاہ کی نافرمانی کی وجہ سے ادوم اور لبناہ نے یہوداہ کے خلاف بغاوت کر دی اور خود مختار ہو گئے۔

2 Kings 8:23–24

Verse: And the rest of the acts of Joram… And Joram slept with his fathers… and Ahaziah his son reigned in his stead.

  • English Explanation: Joram dies and is succeeded by his son Ahaziah. The records of his reign are kept in the royal chronicles.

  • Urdu Explanation: یہورام کی موت کے بعد اس کا بیٹا اخزیاہ تخت پر بیٹھا۔

2 Kings 8:25–27

Verse: In the twelfth year of Joram… Ahaziah the son of Jehoram… walked in the way of the house of Ahab… for he was the son in law of the house of Ahab.

  • English Explanation: Ahaziah continues the spiritual decline of Judah, influenced heavily by his mother Athaliah and his family ties to the house of Ahab.

  • Urdu Explanation: اخزیاہ نے بھی اخی اب کے خاندان کی طرح برے کام کیے کیونکہ وہ ان کا داماد تھا اور ان کے زیرِ اثر تھا۔

2 Kings 8:28–29

Verse: And he went with Joram… to the war against Hazael… and the Syrians wounded Joram… And Ahaziah… went down to see Joram… because he was sick.

  • English Explanation: The kings of Israel and Judah unite against Hazael of Syria. Joram is wounded and retreats to Jezreel, where Ahaziah visits him.

  • Urdu Explanation: اسرائیل اور یہوداہ کے بادشاہوں نے مل کر حزائیل سے جنگ کی، جہاں یورام زخمی ہوا اور اخزیاہ اس کی عیادت کے لیے یزرعیل گیا۔

Chapter 9: The Anointing of Jehu

2 Kings 9:1–3

Verse: And Elisha the prophet called one of the children of the prophets and said… take this box of oil… and go to Ramoth-gilead… And… pour it on his head and say Thus saith the LORD I have anointed thee king over Israel.

  • English Explanation: Elisha sends a young prophet to secretly anoint Jehu as king, signaling the divine end of Ahab’s dynasty.

  • Urdu Explanation: الیشع نے ایک شاگرد کو بھیجا تاکہ وہ یاہو کو اسرائیل کا بادشاہ مسح کرے اور اسے اخی اب کے خاندان پر عدالت کا پیغام دے۔

2 Kings 9:4–6

Verse: So the young man… went to Ramoth-gilead… And he arose and went into the house and he poured the oil on his head… I have anointed thee king over the people of the LORD even over Israel.

  • English Explanation: The young prophet obeys, finds Jehu among the army captains, and performs the anointing in private as instructed.

  • Urdu Explanation: نوجوان نبی نے رامات جلعاد جا کر کپتانوں کے درمیان سے یاہو کو الگ کیا اور تنہائی میں اس کے سر پر تیل ڈال کر اسے بادشاہت کا مژدہ سنایا۔

2 Kings 9:7

Verse: And thou shalt smite the house of Ahab thy master that I may avenge the blood of my servants the prophets and the blood of all the servants of the LORD at the hand of Jezebel.

  • English Explanation: Jehu is given a specific mission: to destroy the house of Ahab to avenge the martyred prophets and the righteous blood spilled by Jezebel.

  • Urdu Explanation: یاہو کو حکم دیا گیا کہ وہ اخی اب کے خاندان کو ختم کر دے تاکہ خدا اپنے نبیوں کے خون کا بدلہ ایزبل اور اس کے خاندان سے لے سکے۔
