2 Samuel Chapter 10: Verses and Explanations

Verse 12

Be of good courage and let us play the men for our people and for the cities of our God and the LORD do that which seemeth him good

  • English Explanation: Joab encourages his brother Abishai and the troops to fight with bravery. He emphasizes that they are fighting for their nation and God’s cities, ultimately surrendering the outcome to God’s sovereign will.

  • Urdu Explanation: یوآب اپنے بھائی ابیشے اور فوج کی ہمت بڑھاتا ہے کہ ہمیں اپنی قوم اور خدا کے شہروں کے لیے مردانگی سے لڑنا چاہیے۔ وہ نتیجہ مکمل طور پر خدا کی مرضی پر چھوڑ دیتا ہے۔

Verse 13

And Joab drew nigh and the people that were with him unto the battle against the Syrians and they fled before him

  • English Explanation: As Joab leads the charge against the Syrian mercenaries, the enemy loses heart and retreats before the Israelite army even engages in full combat.

  • Urdu Explanation: جب یوآب نے شامیوں کے خلاف جنگ شروع کی تو وہ اسرائیلی فوج کے سامنے سے بھاگ کھڑے ہوئے۔

Verse 14

And when the children of Ammon saw that the Syrians were fled then fled they also before Abishai and entered into the city So Joab returned from the children of Ammon and came to Jerusalem

  • English Explanation: Seeing their hired help (the Syrians) retreat, the Ammonites panic and flee back into the safety of their city walls. Joab decides not to start a siege then and returns to Jerusalem.

  • Urdu Explanation: جب بنی عمون نے دیکھا کہ شامی بھاگ گئے ہیں تو وہ بھی ابیشے کے سامنے سے بھاگ کر اپنے شہر میں گھس گئے۔ تب یوآب یروشلیم واپس آگیا۔

Verse 15

And when the Syrians saw that they were smitten before Israel they gathered themselves together

  • English Explanation: The Syrians realize they have been humiliated and regroup to launch a much larger, more unified counter-offensive against Israel.

  • Urdu Explanation: جب شامیوں نے دیکھا کہ وہ اسرائیل سے ہار گئے ہیں تو انہوں نے اپنی طاقت کو دوبارہ اکٹھا کیا تاکہ پھر سے حملہ کر سکیں۔

Verse 16

And Hadarezer sent and brought out the Syrians that were beyond the river and they came to Helam and Shobach the captain of the host of Hadarezer went before them

  • English Explanation: King Hadarezer calls for reinforcements from beyond the Euphrates River. This massive army assembles at Helam under the command of Shobach.

  • Urdu Explanation: ہدرعزر نے دریائے فرات کے پار سے مزید شامی فوجی بلائے۔ وہ حیلام میں جمع ہوئے اور ان کا سپہ سالار شوبک ان کی قیادت کر رہا تھا۔

Verse 17

And when it was told David he gathered all Israel together and passed over Jordan and came to Helam And the Syrians set themselves in array against David and fought with him

  • English Explanation: King David takes personal command of the entire Israelite army, crosses the Jordan River, and meets the Syrian coalition at Helam for a decisive battle.

  • Urdu Explanation: جب داؤد کو خبر ملی تو اس نے تمام اسرائیل کو اکٹھا کیا اور دریائے یردن پار کر کے حیلام پہنچا جہاں شامیوں نے اس کا مقابلہ کیا۔

Verse 18

And the Syrians fled before Israel and David slew the men of seven hundred chariots of the Syrians and forty thousand horsemen and smote Shobach the captain of their host who died there

  • English Explanation: Israel wins a massive victory. They destroy a significant portion of the Syrian chariot force and cavalry, and the enemy general, Shobach, is killed.

  • Urdu Explanation: شامی اسرائیل کے سامنے سے بھاگے۔ داؤد نے ان کے سات سو رتھوں کے سواروں اور چالیس ہزار سواروں کو قتل کیا اور ان کا سپہ سالار شوبک بھی مارا گیا۔

Verse 19

And when all the kings that were servants to Hadarezer saw that they were smitten before Israel they made peace with Israel and served them So the Syrians feared to help the children of Ammon any more

  • English Explanation: The vassal kings under Hadarezer realize Israel’s dominance and switch their allegiance to David. The Syrians stop supporting the Ammonites out of fear.

  • Urdu Explanation: جب ماتحت بادشاہوں نے دیکھا کہ وہ ہار گئے ہیں تو انہوں نے داؤد سے صلح کر لی اور اس کے محکوم بن گئے۔ اس کے بعد شامیوں نے بنی عمون کی مدد کرنے سے توبہ کر لی۔

2 Samuel Chapter 11: Verses and Explanations

Verse 1

And it came to pass after the year was expired at the time when kings go forth to battle that David sent Joab and his servants with him and all Israel and they destroyed the children of Ammon and besieged Rabbah But David tarried still at Jerusalem

  • English Explanation: In the spring, when military campaigns usually resumed, David stayed behind in the luxury of his palace while his army went to war. This set the stage for his temptation.

  • Urdu Explanation: بہار کے موسم میں جب بادشاہ جنگ کے لیے نکلتے تھے، داؤد نے یوآب کو بھیجا لیکن خود یروشلیم میں ہی ٹھہرا رہا۔ یہی اس کی آزمائش کا آغاز تھا۔

Verse 2

And it came to pass in an eveningtide that David arose from off his bed and walked upon the roof of the king’s house and from the roof he saw a woman washing herself and the woman was very beautiful to look upon

  • English Explanation: Restless, David walks on his roof and spots Bathsheba bathing. Instead of looking away, he dwells on her beauty, leading to lustful intent.

  • Urdu Explanation: ایک شام داؤد اپنے بستر سے اٹھ کر چھت پر ٹہل رہا تھا کہ اس نے ایک خوبصورت عورت کو نہاتے دیکھا جو دیکھنے میں بہت ہی حسین تھی۔

Verse 3

And David sent and enquired after the woman And one said Is not this Bath-sheba the daughter of Eliam the wife of Uriah the Hittite

  • English Explanation: David pursues his interest by asking about her. He is explicitly told she is the wife of Uriah, one of his loyal “mighty men,” making any pursuit a grave sin.

  • Urdu Explanation: داؤد نے اس کے بارے میں پوچھا تو اسے بتایا گیا کہ یہ بت سبع ہے جو اوریاہ حتی کی بیوی ہے۔ یہ جاننے کے باوجود کہ وہ شادی شدہ ہے، داؤد پیچھے نہ ہٹا۔

Verse 4

And David sent messengers and took her and she came in unto him and he lay with her for she was purified from her uncleanness and she returned unto her house

  • English Explanation: David abuses his royal power to bring Bathsheba to the palace and commits adultery with her. Afterward, she returns home.

  • Urdu Explanation: داؤد نے پیغامبر بھیج کر اسے بلایا اور اس کے ساتھ گناہ کیا۔ پھر وہ اپنے گھر واپس چلی گئی۔

Verse 5

And the woman conceived and sent and told David and said I am with child

  • English Explanation: Bathsheba becomes pregnant and informs David. This creates a crisis because her husband, Uriah, has been away at war, making the adultery obvious.

  • Urdu Explanation: بت سبع حاملہ ہو گئی اور اس نے داؤد کو پیغام بھیجا کہ میں امید سے ہوں۔ اس سے داؤد کی مشکل بڑھ گئی کیونکہ اوریاہ جنگ پر تھا۔

Verse 6

And David sent to Joab saying Send me Uriah the Hittite And Joab sent Uriah to David

  • English Explanation: To cover up his sin, David initiates a plan to bring Uriah back from the front lines, hoping he will sleep with his wife.

  • Urdu Explanation: اپنے گناہ کو چھپانے کے لیے داؤد نے یوآب کو پیغام بھیجا کہ اوریاہ حتی کو میرے پاس بھیجو۔

Verse 7

And when Uriah was come unto him David demanded of him how Joab did and how the people did and how the war prospered

  • English Explanation: David makes small talk with Uriah about the war to hide his true intentions and make the visit seem like a standard military debriefing.

  • Urdu Explanation: جب اوریاہ آیا تو داؤد نے اس سے جنگ اور یوآب کی خیریت پوچھی تاکہ اسے شک نہ ہو۔

Verse 8

And David said to Uriah Go down to thy house and wash thy feet And Uriah departed out of the king’s house and there followed him a mess of meat from the king

  • English Explanation: David urges Uriah to go home and relax (and sleep with Bathsheba), even sending a gift of food to encourage a celebratory atmosphere.

  • Urdu Explanation: داؤد نے اوریاہ سے کہا کہ اپنے گھر جا کر آرام کر اور اس کے پیچھے شاہی کھانا بھی بھیجا تاکہ وہ اپنی بیوی کے پاس جائے۔

Verse 9

But Uriah slept at the door of the king’s house with all the servants of his lord and went not down to his house

  • English Explanation: Uriah, a man of integrity, refuses to enjoy the comforts of home while his fellow soldiers are in the field. He sleeps at the palace gate instead.

  • Urdu Explanation: لیکن اوریاہ اپنے گھر نہیں گیا بلکہ بادشاہ کے خادموں کے ساتھ محل کے دروازے پر سو گیا کیونکہ اس کے ساتھی میدانِ جنگ میں تھے۔

Verse 10

And when they had told David saying Uriah went not down unto his house David said unto Uriah Camest thou not from thy journey why then didst thou not go down unto thine house

  • English Explanation: David is frustrated that his cover-up plan is failing and questions Uriah’s refusal to go home.

  • Urdu Explanation: جب داؤد کو پتہ چلا کہ اوریاہ گھر نہیں گیا تو اس نے اس سے پوچھا کہ تم اتنے طویل سفر سے آئے ہو تو گھر کیوں نہیں گئے؟

Verse 11

And Uriah said unto David The ark and Israel and Judah abide in tents and my lord Joab and the servants of my lord are encamped in the open fields shall I then go into mine house to eat and to drink and to lie with my wife as thou livest and as thy soul liveth I will not do this thing

  • English Explanation: Uriah expresses a noble soldier’s creed—he cannot justify personal pleasure while the Ark of God and the army are facing hardship. This highlights David’s own lack of discipline.

  • Urdu Explanation: اوریاہ نے جواب دیا کہ جب خدا کا عہد کا صندوق اور اسرائیلی فوج خیموں میں ہیں، تو میں کیسے گھر جا کر عیش کر سکتا ہوں؟ میں ایسا کبھی نہیں کروں گا۔

Verse 12

And David said to Uriah Tarry here to day also and to morrow I will let thee depart So Uriah abode in Jerusalem that day and the morrow

  • English Explanation: David tries one more time to keep Uriah in the city, hoping another night will lead him back to Bathsheba.

  • Urdu Explanation: داؤد نے اسے ایک اور دن روک لیا تاکہ اسے دوبارہ موقع مل سکے کہ وہ اپنے گھر جائے۔

Verse 13

And when David had called him he did eat and drink before him and he made him drunk and at even he went out to lie on his bed with the servants of his lord but went not down to his house

  • English Explanation: David stoops lower by getting Uriah drunk, thinking he will lose his inhibitions and go home. Even in a drunken state, Uriah remains loyal to his duty and stays at the palace.

  • Urdu Explanation: داؤد نے اوریاہ کو بلا کر اسے شراب پلائی تاکہ وہ نشے میں گھر چلا جائے، لیکن اوریاہ پھر بھی اپنے گھر نہیں گیا اور خادموں کے ساتھ ہی سویا۔

Verse 14

And it came to pass in the morning that David wrote a letter to Joab and sent it by the hand of Uriah

  • English Explanation: Realizing the cover-up failed, David resorts to murder. He writes Uriah’s death warrant and, ironically, has the faithful Uriah deliver his own execution order.

  • Urdu Explanation: صبح داؤد نے یوآب کے نام ایک خط لکھا اور اسے اوریاہ کے ہاتھ ہی بھیجا، جس میں اس کی موت کا حکم تھا۔

Verse 15

And he wrote in the letter saying Set ye Uriah in the forefront of the hottest battle and retire ye from him that he may be smitten and die

  • English Explanation: The letter instructs Joab to place Uriah in the most dangerous part of the battle and then abandon him, ensuring his death would look like a casualty of war.

  • Urdu Explanation: خط میں لکھا تھا کہ اوریاہ کو سخت ترین جنگ کے محاذ پر رکھو اور اسے اکیلا چھوڑ دو تاکہ وہ مارا جائے۔
