Verse-by-Verse Commentary (Acts 18:12 – Acts 19:16)
Acts 18:12
Verse: And when Gallio was the deputy of Achaia the Jews made insurrection with one accord against Paul and brought him to the judgment seat
-
English Explanation: This verse marks a significant historical milestone in Paul’s ministry. Gallio, a Roman proconsul known for his fairness, becomes the ruler of Achaia. Seeking to exploit this leadership change, the local Jewish leaders unite to launch a coordinated legal attack against Paul, bringing him before the Bema (the official Roman judgment seat) to stop his gospel preaching.
-
Acts 18:13
Verse: Saying This fellow persuadeth men to worship God contrary to the law
-
English Explanation: The accusation brought against Paul is highly strategic. They argue that his teachings violate their religious law. By phrasing it this way, they hope the Roman authorities will view Paul as a lawbreaker, potentially making his teachings illegal under Roman law, which typically protected established Jewish customs.
-
Acts 18:14
Verse: And when Paul was now about to open his mouth Gallio said unto the Jews If it were a matter of wrong or wicked lewdness O ye Jews reason would that I should bear with you
-
English Explanation: Before Paul can even begin his defense, Gallio cuts to the heart of the matter. He speaks directly to the accusers, stating that if this were a case of an actual civil crime, injustice, or moral wrongdoing, it would be his civic duty as a Roman magistrate to sit and listen to their arguments.
-
Acts 18:15
Verse: But if it be a question of words and names and of your law look ye to it for I will be no judge of such matters
-
English Explanation: Gallio dismisses the case instantly. He recognizes that this is an internal theological dispute involving Jewish words, titles (like “Messiah”), and religious laws. Refusing to entangle Roman law in theological debates, he tells them to settle it among themselves.
-
Acts 18:16
Verse: And he drave them from the judgment seat
-
English Explanation: With absolute authority, Gallio orders the accusers to leave his court. His refusal to rule against Christianity set a critical legal precedent throughout the Roman Empire, effectively allowing the Gospel to be preached without being classified as an illegal religion.
-
Acts 18:17
Verse: Then all the Greeks took Sosthenes the chief ruler of the synagogue and beat him before the judgment seat And Gallio cared for none of those things
-
English Explanation: Seeing the proconsul’s total indifference, the Greek bystanders turned on Sosthenes, the leader of the Jewish synagogue who had likely led the prosecution against Paul, and beat him openly. Gallio deliberately ignored the brawl, demonstrating his complete refusal to get involved in Jewish-related altercations.
-
Acts 18:18
Verse: And Paul after this tarried there yet a good while and then took his leave of the brethren and sailed thence into Syria and with him Priscilla and Aquila having shorn his head in Cenchrea for he had a vow
-
English Explanation: Protected by the legal precedent set by Gallio, Paul safely stayed in Corinth for many more days. When he finally departed for Syria, he was accompanied by his close ministry partners, Priscilla and Aquila. Before sailing, Paul shaved his head at the port of Cenchrea, completing a temporary Jewish vow (likely a Nazirite vow) of thanksgiving to God.
-
Acts 18:19
Verse: And he came to Ephesus and left them there but he himself entered into the synagogue and reasoned with the Jews
-
English Explanation: Arriving at the major strategic city of Ephesus, Paul left Priscilla and Aquila there to establish a base. Following his usual missionary strategy, Paul immediately visited the local synagogue to discuss and debate the scriptures with the Jewish community, proving Jesus is the Messiah.
-
Acts 18:20
Verse: When they desired him to tarry longer time with them he consented not
-
English Explanation: Uncharacteristically, the Jews in Ephesus responded positively and asked Paul to stay longer to teach them. However, because of his pressing travel timeline and internal commitments, Paul declined their invitation to remain at that moment.
-
Acts 18:21
Verse: But bade them farewell saying I must by all means keep this feast that cometh in Jerusalem but I will return again unto you if God will And he sailed from Ephesus
-
English Explanation: As he said goodbye, Paul explained that he felt compelled to celebrate the upcoming holy feast in Jerusalem. Nevertheless, he left them with a pastoral promise to return to Ephesus in the future, conditional upon God’s sovereign will, and set sail.
-
Acts 18:22
Verse: And when he had landed at Caesarea and gone up and saluted the church he went down to Antioch
-
English Explanation: Paul arrived by sea at the port of Caesarea. He “went up” to Jerusalem to greet the mother church and fulfill his vow, completing his second missionary journey. Afterward, he traveled back down to Antioch in Syria, his sending home church, to report on his ministry.
-
Acts 18:23
Verse: And after he had spent some time there he departed and went over all the country of Galatia and Phrygia in order strengthening all the disciples
-
English Explanation: After spending some time resting and reporting in Antioch, Paul launched his third missionary journey. He traveled overland through the regions of Galatia and Phrygia, systematically visiting the young churches he had planted earlier to encourage and strengthen the believers in their faith.
-
Acts 18:24
Verse: And a certain Jew named Apollos born at Alexandria an eloquent man and mighty in the scriptures came to Ephesus
-
Explanation: While Paul was traveling, a brilliant Jewish believer named Apollos arrived in Ephesus. Originally from Alexandria, Egypt (a world center of education and philosophy), Apollos was an exceptionally gifted speaker and possessed an extraordinarily deep, authoritative understanding of the Old Testament scriptures.
-
Acts 18:25
Verse: This man was instructed in the way of the Lord and being fervent in the spirit he spake and taught diligently the things of the Lord knowing only the baptism of John
-
English Explanation: Apollos had been instructed in the core truths about Jesus and preached with burning spiritual zeal and accuracy. However, his theological knowledge was incomplete; he was only aware of John the Baptist’s message of repentance and was unaware of the full reality of Jesus’ death, resurrection, and the outpouring of the Holy Spirit.
-
Acts 18:26
Verse: And he began to speak boldly in the synagogue whom when Aquila and Priscilla had heard they took him unto them and expounded unto him the way of God more perfectly
-
English Explanation: Apollos began to preach with great courage in the Ephesian synagogue. When Priscilla and Aquila heard him, they recognized his immense potential but noted his incomplete message. Demonstrating great hospitality and tact, they privately invited him to their home and gently explained the full gospel story and the work of the Holy Spirit to him.
-
Acts 18:27
Verse: And when he was disposed to pass into Achaia the brethren wrote exhorting the disciples to receive him who when he was come helped them much which had believed through grace
-
English Explanation: When Apollos decided to travel to Achaia (specifically to Corinth) to minister, the Ephesian believers enthusiastically supported him. They wrote letters of recommendation, urging the Corinthian disciples to welcome him. Upon his arrival, Apollos became a massive asset, profoundly encouraging those who had received salvation through God’s grace.
-
Acts 18:28
Verse: For he mightily convinced the Jews and that publickly shewing by the scriptures that Jesus was Christ
-
English Explanation: Utilizing his vast scriptural knowledge and eloquence, Apollos publicly and powerfully debated the Jewish leaders in Corinth. He thoroughly refuted their arguments, systematically proving from the Old Testament prophecies that Jesus of Nazareth is indeed the promised Messiah.
-
Acts 19:1
Verse: And it came to pass that while Apollos was at Corinth Paul having passed through the upper coasts came to Ephesus and finding certain disciples
-
English Explanation: While Apollos was busy strengthening the church in Corinth, Paul completed his inland journey through the upper regions of Asia Minor and arrived back in Ephesus. There, he encountered a small group of about twelve men who were identified as “disciples” but lacked core Christian experiences.
-
Acts 19:2
Verse: He said unto them Have ye received the Holy Ghost since ye believed And they said unto him We have not so much as heard whether there be any Holy Ghost
-
English Explanation: Noticing something missing in their spiritual life, Paul asked them directly if they had received the Holy Spirit when they believed. Their shocking response revealed that they were completely unaware that the Holy Spirit had already been poured out upon believers at Pentecost.
-
Acts 19:3
Verse: And he said unto them Unto what then were ye baptized And they said Unto John’s baptism
-
English Explanation: Perplexed by their answer, Paul questioned their theological foundation by asking what kind of baptism they had received. They replied that they had received John the Baptist’s baptism, which explained why their knowledge stopped where Apollos’ knowledge had previously stopped.
-
Acts 19:4
Verse: Then said Paul John verily baptized with the baptism of repentance saying unto the people that they should believe on him which should come after him that is on Christ Jesus
-
English Explanation: Paul clarified the purpose of John’s ministry. He explained that John’s baptism was merely a preparatory step focused on repentance, designed to point people forward to the one coming after him—Jesus Christ, who would baptize with the Holy Spirit.
-
Acts 19:5
Verse: When they heard this they were baptized in the name of the Lord Jesus
-
English Explanation: Upon hearing Paul’s explanation and recognizing the full revelation of the Gospel, these twelve men immediately submitted to Christian baptism, being baptized explicitly in the name and authority of the Lord Jesus.
-
Urdu Explanation:
Acts 19:6
Verse: And when Paul had laid his hands upon them the Holy Ghost came on them and they spake with tongues and prophesied
-
English Explanation: As Paul laid his hands on them to welcome them into the full body of Christ, the Holy Spirit fell upon them dynamically. Similar to the original Day of Pentecost, they received supernatural validation, speaking in unlearned languages and uttering prophetic praises to God.
-
Urdu Explanation:
Acts 19:7
Verse: And all the men were about twelve
-
English Explanation: The author, Luke, notes that this group consisted of about twelve men. This small core group formed the foundation of what would soon become one of the most powerful and influential churches in the ancient world: the church at Ephesus.
-
Urdu Explanation:
Acts 19:8
Verse: And he went into the synagogue and spake boldly for the space of three months disputing and persuading the things concerning the kingdom of God
-
English Explanation: Paul then spent three solid months preaching boldly in the Ephesian synagogue. He focused his teachings entirely on the Kingdom of God, reasoning logically and persuasively with the Jews to convince them that Jesus fulfilled all messianic expectations.
-
Acts 19:9
Verse: But when divers were hardened and believed not but spake evil of that way before the multitude he departed from them and separated the disciples disputing daily in the school of one Tyrannus
-
English Explanation: Eventually, some Jewish listeners became stubborn, flatly refusing to believe and publicly defaming Christianity (“the Way”). Recognizing the closed door, Paul withdrew from the synagogue, took the believers with him, and moved his daily operations to a public lecture hall owned by a philosopher named Tyrannus.
-
Acts 19:10
Verse: And this continued by the space of two years so that all they which dwelt in Asia heard the word of the Lord Jesus both Jews and Greeks
-
English Explanation: This strategic daily teaching in the school of Tyrannus continued for two whole years. Because Ephesus was a bustling commercial and religious hub, travelers from all over the province of Asia heard the gospel and carried it back to their towns, reaching both Jews and Greeks.
-
Acts 19:11
Verse: And God wrought special miracles by the hands of Paul
-
English Explanation: To confirm the authority of the Gospel message over the intense occult culture of Ephesus, God performed extraordinary, unusual miracles through Paul’s physical hands. The text notes that these were not ordinary healings, but “special” miracles driven by divine power.
-
Acts 19:12
Verse: So that from his body were brought unto the sick handkerchiefs or aprons and the diseases departed from them and the evil spirits went out of them
-
English Explanation: The miracles were so potent that sweatbands (handkerchiefs) and work aprons used by Paul while tentmaking were carried away to the sick. When these clothes touched afflicted individuals, diseases were miraculously cured and demonic spirits fled, proving God’s sovereign authority over sickness and Satan.
-
Acts 19:13
Verse: Then certain of the vagabond Jews exorcists took upon them to call over them which had evil spirits the name of the Lord Jesus saying We adjure you by Jesus whom Paul preacheth
-
English Explanation: Seeing Paul’s success, a group of traveling Jewish exorcists tried to copy his methods for financial gain. They attempted to treat the name of Jesus like a magical spell, chanting over demon-possessed people, “I command you by the Jesus whom Paul preacheth,” lacking any personal faith in Him.
-
Acts 19:14
Verse: And there were seven sons of one Sceva a Jew and chief of the priests which did so
-
English Explanation: Luke provides specific details of this unauthorized exorcism, noting that it was carried out by the seven sons of a Jewish high-ranking priest named Sceva. They assumed their religious heritage and a formulaic prayer would grant them spiritual power.
-
Acts 19:15
Verse: And the evil spirit answered and said Jesus I know and Paul I know but who are ye
-
English Explanation: The confrontation turned terrifying when the demonic spirit spoke back through the possessed man. The demon clearly stated that it recognized the ultimate authority of Jesus and respected the delegated authority of Paul, but exposed the sons of Sceva as powerless frauds, demanding to know who they thought they were.
-
Acts 19:16
Verse: And the man in whom the evil spirit was leaped on them and overcame them and prevailed against them so that they fled out of that house naked and wounded
-
English Explanation: Possessing supernatural demonic strength, the possessed man violently attacked the seven brothers. He physically overpowered all of them, tearing off their clothes and beating them so severely that they fled from the house stripped, bleeding, and utterly humiliated. This event starkly demonstrated that the name of Jesus cannot be used as a magical formula without genuine faith.
-
