Verse-by-Verse Commentary & Explanation
Amos 2:4
Verse:
Thus saith the LORD For three transgressions of Judah and for four I will not turn away the punishment thereof because they have despised the law of the LORD and have not kept his commandments and their lies caused them to err after the which their fathers have walked
English Explanation: God directs His judgment toward Judah, the southern kingdom. Unlike the pagan nations around them who violated basic human conscience, Judah’s sin is a deliberate rejection of God’s written law (the Torah). They replaced divine truth with “lies” (false idols and pagan traditions) inherited from their ancestors. The phrase “for three transgressions and for four” signifies that their sins have overflowed past the limit of divine patience, making judgment inevitable.
Amos 2:5
Verse:
But I will send a fire upon Judah and it shall devour the palaces of Jerusalem
English Explanation: Because of Judah’s spiritual rebellion, God promises a consuming judgment represented as “fire.” This fire will specifically target the symbols of their wealth, pride, and human security—the palaces of Jerusalem. This prophecy was historically fulfilled when Nebuchadnezzar and the Babylonian army burned Jerusalem and its temple.
Amos 2:6
Verse:
Thus saith the LORD For three transgressions of Israel and for four I will not turn away the punishment thereof because they sold the righteous for silver and the poor for a pair of shoes
English Explanation: The focus shifts to the northern kingdom, Israel. Amos highlights their systemic societal corruption. The rich and powerful were corrupting the legal system, selling innocent, righteous people into slavery for a meager silver bribe, and bankrupting the poor over minor debts as small as the price of a pair of sandals.
Amos 2:7
Verse:
That pant after the dust of the earth on the head of the poor and turn aside the way of the meek and a man and his father will go in unto the same maid to profane my holy name
English Explanation: This verse describes intense greed and moral decay. The oppressors are so money-hungry that they even covet the dust thrown on a poor man’s head in times of mourning. They block the humble from getting justice. Furthermore, sexual immorality is rampant, to the extent that a father and son visit the same shrine prostitute, utterly dishonoring God’s holy name.
Amos 2:8
Verse:
And they lay themselves down upon clothes laid to pledge by every altar and they drink the wine of the condemned in the house of their god
English Explanation: According to God’s law, a garment taken from a poor person as collateral for a loan had to be returned before sunset so they wouldn’t freeze. Instead, Israel’s wealthy elite kept these garments and used them as blankets to lounge on while worshiping idols. They also drank wine purchased with unjust fines collected from the falsely condemned, celebrating inside their pagan temples.
Amos 2:9
Verse:
Yet destroyed I the Amorite before them whose height was like the height of the cedars and he was strong as the oaks yet I destroyed his fruit from above and his roots from beneath
English Explanation: God reminds Israel of His past faithfulness to expose their ingratitude. He destroyed the powerful, giant-like Amorites (Canaanites) who seemed as unbreakable as cedar and oak trees. God wiped them out completely—from “fruit” (descendants) to “roots” (ancestors)—to give Israel this land.
Amos 2:10
Verse:
Also I brought you up from the land of Egypt and led you forty years through the wilderness to possess the land of the Amorite
English Explanation: God continues to recount His grace. He rescued Israel from harsh Egyptian slavery and sustained them miraculously for forty years in the barren desert, ensuring they survived to inherit the land of the Amorites. Their current sins are a direct betrayal of this redemptive love.
Amos 2:11
Verse:
And I raised up of your sons for prophets and of your young men for Nazarites Is it not even thus O ye children of Israel saith the LORD
English Explanation: God blessed Israel not just with physical land, but with spiritual leaders. He raised prophets to speak His truth and young Nazarites (people consecrated to God by a vow of holiness and abstinence) as examples of clean living. God challenges Israel to deny this undeniable reality.
Amos 2:12
Verse:
But ye gave the Nazarites wine to drink and commanded the prophets saying Prophesy not
English Explanation: Instead of honoring God’s spiritual gifts, Israel actively corrupted them. They pressured the Nazarites to break their holy vows by drinking wine, and they silenced the prophets because they did not want to hear God’s warnings and rebukes against their sins.
Amos 2:13
Verse:
Behold I am pressed under you as a cart is pressed that is full of sheaves
English Explanation: God uses a vivid agricultural metaphor. He describes Himself as being weighed down, crushed, and burdened by Israel’s continuous sins, just as a wooden harvest cart groans and buckles under the heavy weight of freshly cut grain sheaves.
Amos 2:14
Verse:
Therefore the flight shall perish from the swift and the strong shall not strengthen his force neither shall the mighty deliver himself
English Explanation: When God’s judgment finally falls, human power will prove utterly useless. The fastest runner will not be able to escape the invading army, the strong soldier will lose his energy, and the elite warrior will fail to save his own life.
Amos 2:15
Verse:
Neither shall he stand that handleth the bow and he that is swift of foot shall not deliver himself neither shall he that rideth the horse deliver himself
English Explanation: The collapse of Israel’s defense forces will be complete. Archers with long-range weapons will retreat, fast foot-soldiers will fail to flee, and cavalrymen on swift horses will find no escape route from the divine wrath.
Amos 2:16
Verse:
And he that is courageous among the mighty shall flee away naked in that day saith the LORD
English Explanation: On that terrifying day of military defeat, even the bravest and most elite soldiers will lose their courage. Stripping off their heavy armor and weapons to run faster, they will flee the battlefield completely naked and humiliated.
Amos 3:1
Verse:
Hear this word that the LORD hath spoken against you O children of Israel against the whole family which I brought up from the land of Egypt saying
English Explanation: Chapter 3 opens with a formal summons. God commands the entire nation—all descendants of the twelve tribes rescued from Egypt—to pay absolute attention. Because of their special covenant relationship, they are uniquely accountable for their actions.
Amos 3:2
Verse:
You only have I known of all the families of the earth therefore I will punish you for all your iniquities
English Explanation: The word “known” here implies a deep, intimate covenant love, not just cognitive awareness. Out of all the nations on earth, God chose Israel uniquely. However, privilege brings accountability. Because they received the most light and grace, their sins are more serious, requiring strict divine punishment.
Amos 3:3
Verse:
Can two walk together except they be agreed
English Explanation: Amos begins a series of cause-and-effect rhetorical questions to justify his prophetic message. Two people cannot travel together on a lonely road unless they have met and agreed on the destination. Likewise, Israel cannot expect to walk in fellowship with a holy God while they live in open sin.
Amos 3:4
Verse:
Will a lion roar in the forest when he hath no prey will a young lion cry out of his den if he have taken nothing
English Explanation: A lion does not roar in the wild unless it has located its target, and a young lion does not growl in its den unless it is already consuming its catch. The lesson here is that Amos’s terrifying prophecies are not random; they are a direct response to Israel’s obvious guilt.
Amos 3:5
Verse:
Can a bird fall in a snare upon the earth where no gin is for him shall one take up a snare from the earth and have taken nothing at all
English Explanation: A bird does not plummet into a trap on the ground unless a snare was deliberately set for it. Similarly, a mechanical trap doesn’t snap shut and get triggered unless it catches something. Judgment does not happen by accident; Israel has trapped itself through its own transgressions.
Amos 3:6
Verse:
Shall a trumpet be blown in the city and the people not be afraid shall there be evil in a city and the LORD hath not done it
English Explanation: When a watchman blows a warning trumpet in a city, the citizens naturally tremble in fear of an invasion. Amos notes that if “evil” (meaning calamity or disaster, not moral evil) strikes a city, it is ultimately allowed or orchestrated by the Lord as a sovereign judgment.
Amos 3:7
Verse:
Surely the Lord GOD will do nothing but he revealeth his secret unto his servants the prophets
English Explanation: Before executing His ultimate judgments, God graciously warns His people. He does not act in total secrecy; He shares His divine decrees and upcoming plans with His loyal messengers, the prophets, so people have a final chance to repent.
Amos 3:8
Verse:
The lion hath roared who will not fear the Lord GOD hath spoken who can but prophesy
English Explanation: God is compared to a roaring lion. When He speaks a word of warning and judgment, fear is the only natural human reaction. Since the Sovereign Lord has given Amos a direct message, the prophet has no choice but to speak out, regardless of how unpopular the message is.
Amos 3:9
Verse:
Publish in the palaces at Ashdod and in the palaces in the land of Egypt and say Assemble yourselves upon the mountains of Samaria and behold the great tumults in the midst thereof and the oppressed in the midst thereof
English Explanation: God commands a public proclamation to the pagan nations of Ashdod (Philistia) and Egypt. He invites these heathen empires to stand on the mountains surrounding Samaria (Israel’s capital) to witness the shocking lawlessness, chaos, and systemic oppression happening inside God’s chosen nation. Ironically, pagan nations are called to judge Israel’s lack of morality.
Amos 3:10
Verse:
For they know not to do right saith the LORD who store up violence and robbery in their palaces
English Explanation: Israel has practiced evil for so long that they have completely lost their moral compass—they literally “know not to do right.” Their grand palaces, built on exploitation, are nothing more than warehouses filled with goods obtained through violence, plunder, and robbery.
Amos 3:11
Verse:
Therefore thus saith the Lord GOD An adversary there shall be even round about the land and he shall bring down thy strength from thee and thy palaces shall be spoiled
English Explanation: Because of their crimes, God pronounces sentence. An enemy (historically fulfilled by the Assyrian Empire) will encircle the land. This invading power will completely dismantle Israel’s military defenses and plunder all the wealthy palaces they filled with stolen goods.
Amos 3:12
Verse:
Thus saith the LORD As the shepherd taketh out of the mouth of the lion two legs or a piece of an ear so shall the children of Israel be taken out that dwell in Samaria in the corner of a bed and in Damascus in a couch
English Explanation: Amos uses a bleak shepherd analogy to describe the remnant. According to ancient Middle Eastern laws, a shepherd had to produce remnants of a sheep (like two leg bones or a torn ear) to prove to the owner that a predator killed it. Similarly, Israel’s rescue will not be a grand deliverance, but a near-total destruction. Only a tiny, broken remnant of Samaria’s wealthy elite—who lounge lazily on luxurious beds and couches—will survive the coming onslaught.
