Verse-by-Verse Commentary & Explanation (Amos 5:6 – Amos 6:4)
Amos 5:6
Verse: Seek the LORD and ye shall live lest he break out like fire in the house of Joseph and devour it and there be none to quench it in Bethel
-
English Explanation: This verse is a passionate plea for repentance. The Prophet Amos warns the Northern Kingdom of Israel (referred to here as the “house of Joseph”) that their only hope for survival is to genuinely turn back to God. If they refuse, God’s judgment will manifest as an unquenchable fire, destroying their false centers of worship like Bethel, which cannot save them.
-
Amos 5:7
Verse: Ye who turn judgment to wormwood and leave off righteousness in the earth
-
English Explanation: Amos condemns the corrupt leaders and judges of Israel. “Wormwood” is a bitter herb; instead of providing sweet, fair justice to the people, the leaders have corrupted the legal system, making it bitter and poisonous for the innocent while abandoning all righteousness.
-
Amos 5:8
Verse: Seek him that maketh the seven stars and Orion and turneth the shadow of death into the morning and maketh the day dark with night that calleth for the waters of the sea and poureth them out upon the face of the earth The LORD is his name
-
English Explanation: To show the folly of idol worship, Amos highlights the supreme power of Yahweh. He is the Creator of the constellations (Pleiades/Seven Stars and Orion), the Ruler of day and night, and the Master of the water cycle. Israel must seek this sovereign Almighty God, not powerless idols.
-
Amos 5:9
Verse: That strengtheneth the spoiled against the strong so that the spoiled shall come against the fortress
-
English Explanation: God shatters human pride and military confidence. He can instantly empower the weak and plundered (“the spoiled”) to overcome mighty oppressors and bring destruction upon their supposedly impenetrable fortresses.
-
Amos 5:10
Verse: They hate him that rebuketh in the gate and they abhor him that speaketh uprightly
-
English Explanation: In ancient Israel, the city gate was the courtroom and marketplace. Amos points out the moral decay of society: people absolutely despise honest judges, prophets, or witnesses who speak the truth and rebuke wickedness in public trials.
-
Amos 5:11
Verse: Forasmuch therefore as your treading is upon the poor and ye take from him burdens of wheat ye have built houses of hewn stone but ye shall not dwell in them ye have planted pleasant vineyards but ye shall not drink wine of them
-
English Explanation: The wealthy elite exploited the poor through heavy taxes and extortion (taking their wheat). God declares a poetic justice: though they used their stolen wealth to build luxurious stone mansions and plant beautiful vineyards, they will be exiled before they can ever enjoy them.
-
Amos 5:12
Verse: For I know your manifold transgressions and your mighty sins they afflict the just they take a bribe and they turn aside the poor in the gate from their right
-
English Explanation: God clearly sees the extent of their corruption. He lists their specific sins: persecuting innocent and righteous people, accepting bribes to pervert justice, and denying the impoverished their legal rights in the public courts.
-
Amos 5:13
Verse: Therefore the prudent shall keep silence in that time for it is an evil time
-
English Explanation: The moral landscape has become so dangerous and warped that wise and prudent individuals realize that speaking out is futile and life-threatening. The times are overwhelmingly evil, and speaking the truth brings immediate persecution.
-
Amos 5:14
Verse: Seek good and not evil that ye may live and so the LORD the God of hosts shall be with you as ye have spoken
-
English Explanation: Israel falsely claimed that God was with them simply because they were His chosen nation. Amos corrects this theology: God will only be with them if they transform their behavior—actively pursuing goodness, establishing justice, and rejecting evil practices.
-
Amos 5:15
Verse: Hate the evil and love the good and establish judgment in the gate it may be that the LORD God of hosts will be gracious unto the remnant of Joseph
-
English Explanation: True repentance requires an emotional and structural shift. They must despise wickedness, cherish goodness, and restore fair legal practices in their courts (“the gate”). If they do, perhaps God will spare a surviving “remnant” of the nation from total destruction.
-
Amos 5:16
Verse: Therefore the LORD the God of hosts the Lord saith thus Wailing shall be in all streets and they shall say in all the highways Alas alas and they shall call the husbandman to mourning and such as are skilful of lamentation to wailing
-
English Explanation: Because Israel refuses to change, a decree of massive devastation is issued. Mourning will consume the nation. It will be so widespread that even professional mourners and ordinary farmers (husbandmen) will be drafted to express the overwhelming grief filling every street and highway.
-
Amos 5:17
Verse: And in all vineyards shall be wailing for I will pass through thee saith the LORD
-
English Explanation: Vineyards were traditionally places of joy, singing, and harvest celebrations. However, God declares that even these places will turn into zones of deep sorrow because He is coming to execute judgment directly among them.
-
Amos 5:18
Verse: Woe unto you that desire the day of the LORD to what end is it for you the day of the LORD is darkness and not light
-
Explanation: The Israelites self-righteously looked forward to the “Day of the LORD,” assuming it would be a day of military triumph over their foreign enemies. Amos shatters this illusion, warning that because of their own wickedness, God’s judgment day will bring them absolute spiritual and physical darkness, not victory.
-
Amos 5:19
Verse: As if a man did flee from a lion and a bear met him or went into the house and leaned his hand on the wall and a serpent bit him
-
English Explanation: Amos uses vivid imagery to show that God’s judgment is completely inescapable. If a person manages to escape one deadly danger (a lion), they will run straight into another (a bear). Even if they reach the apparent safety of their own home, danger (a venomous snake) will strike them there.
-
Amos 5:20
Verse: Shall not the day of the LORD be darkness and not light even very dark and no brightness in it
-
English Explanation: Reemphasizing the previous point for absolute clarity, Amos asks a rhetorical question to affirm that the coming judgment will leave no room for hope, joy, or relief for the unrepentant nation. It will be a time of total desolation.
-
Amos 5:21
Verse: I hate I despise your feast days and I will not smell in your solemn assemblies
-
English Explanation: God expresses deep disgust for hypocritical religion. The elite kept up all the outward appearances of worship—festivals, assemblies, and rituals—but because their daily lives were full of oppression and injustice, God utterly rejects their religious displays.
-
Amos 5:22
Verse: Though ye offer me burnt offerings and your meat offerings I will not accept them neither will I regard the peace offerings of your fat beasts
-
English Explanation: Religious rituals cannot buy off God’s justice. Even if they bring their most expensive burnt offerings, grain offerings, or peace offerings from their finest fattened cattle, God will completely ignore them because ritual without righteousness is empty.
-
Amos 5:23
Verse: Take thou away from me the noise of thy songs for I will not hear the melody of thy viols
-
English Explanation: To God, the beautiful worship songs and instrumental music of a corrupt nation sound like nothing more than irritating noise. He demands that they stop the musical performances because He refuses to listen to praise from unholy lips.
-
Amos 5:24
Verse: But let judgment run down as waters and righteousness as a mighty stream
-
English Explanation: This is the core message of the Book of Amos. God does not want empty religious ceremonies; He desires justice to flow continuously and powerfully through society like a never-ending, life-giving river, transforming how people treat one another.
-
Amos 5:25
Verse: Have ye offered unto me sacrifices and offerings in the wilderness forty years O house of Israel
-
English Explanation: God reminds Israel of their history. During the forty years in the wilderness after the Exodus, Israel’s relationship with God was sustained by devotion and obedience, not just by elaborate sacrificial systems. Their current obsession with superficial rituals misses the historical point of the covenant.
-
Amos 5:26
Verse: But ye have borne the tabernacle of your Moloch and Chiun your images the star of your god which ye made to yourselves
-
English Explanation: Amos exposes Israel’s deep-rooted history of secret idolatry. Even while pretending to worship Yahweh, they carried shrines and images of pagan deities like Moloch and Chiun (associated with star/astrological worship) which they manufactured for themselves.
-
Amos 5:27
Verse: Therefore will I cause you to go into captivity beyond Damascus saith the LORD whose name is The God of hosts
-
English Explanation: Because of this unyielding idolatry and systemic social injustice, God pronounces the ultimate sentence: the nation will be conquered and swept away into exile far beyond Damascus (fulfilled historically by the Assyrian captivity).
-
Amos 6:1
Verse: Woe to them that are at ease in Zion and trust in the mountain of Samaria which are named chief of the nations to whom the house of Israel came
-
English Explanation: Amos shifts his focus to the wealthy leaders of both Jerusalem (Zion) and Samaria. He pronounces a curse (“Woe”) on them because they live in lazy luxury and false security, believing that their strong capital cities and political status make them completely immune to disaster.
-
Amos 6:2
Verse: Pass ye unto Calneh and see and from thence go ye to Hamath the great then go down to Gath of the Philistines be they better than these kingdoms or their border greater than your border
-
English Explanation: God challenges the pride of Israel’s leaders by telling them to look at neighboring great city-states like Calneh, Hamath, and Gath, which were recently destroyed or conquered despite their strength. Israel is no better or bigger than them; if those nations fell, Israel can fall too.
-
Amos 6:3
Verse: Ye that put far away the evil day and cause the seat of violence to come near
-
English Explanation: The elite intentionally blind themselves to reality, pushing the thought of God’s coming judgment (“the evil day”) out of their minds. Ironically, by ignoring God and continuing their systemic oppression, they are actually speeding up the arrival of violence and ruin.
-
Amos 6:4
Verse: That lie upon beds of ivory and stretch themselves upon their couches and eat the lambs out of the flock and the calves out of the midst of the stall
-
English Explanation: Amos provides a detailed picture of the ruling class’s excessive, wasteful lifestyle. While the poor are crushed, these elites lounge on expensive ivory furniture, indulge in lazy pampering, and feast on the finest, tenderest meat selected directly from the flocks and stalls.
-
