Verse-by-Verse Commentary and Explanation
Amos 6:5
Verse: That chant to the sound of the viol and invent to themselves instruments of musick like David
English Explanation
This verse critiques the elite of Israel who lived in a bubble of luxury and self-indulgence while their nation crumbled morally. They spend their time improvising idle songs on stringed instruments (“the viol”) and composing music. They arrogantly compare their musical innovations to King David, but unlike David—who used music to worship God—they use it purely for self-entertainment and to drown out the reality of impending divine judgment.
Amos 6:6
Verse: That drink wine in bowls and anoint themselves with the chief ointments but they are not grieved for the affliction of Joseph
English Explanation
The prophet highlights the extreme indulgence and total lack of empathy among the wealthy rulers. Instead of drinking from standard cups, they drink wine from large sacrificial bowls, showcasing their excess. They pamper themselves with the finest oils and perfumes. Yet, they show absolutely zero concern or grief over the “affliction of Joseph” (a term representing the northern kingdom of Israel), which is on the verge of spiritual and physical ruin.
Amos 6:7
Verse: Therefore now shall they go captive with the first that go captive and the banquet of them that stretched themselves shall be removed
English Explanation
Because of their arrogance and self-centered luxury, justice will strike them first. Amos prophesies that when the enemy (the Assyrians) invades, these very elites who considered themselves leaders will be the first to be dragged into captivity. Their extravagant lounges, lazy banquets, and endless partying will come to a sudden and violent end.
Amos 6:8
Verse: The Lord GOD hath sworn by himself saith the LORD the God of hosts I abhor the excellency of Jacob and hate his palaces therefore will I deliver up the city with all that is therein
English Explanation
This is a terrifying declaration of judgment where God swears an oath by His own character, as there is no higher authority. He declares that He despises the “excellency of Jacob”—which refers to the arrogant pride, false security, and material wealth of Israel. He hates their grand, ill-gotten palaces. Consequently, God promises to hand over their capital city (Samaria) and everything inside it to the destroying enemy.
Amos 6:9
Verse: And it shall come to pass if there remain ten men in one house that they shall die
English Explanation
Amos emphasizes the total devastation of the coming judgment. Even if a large group, like ten men, manages to survive the initial military siege by hiding in a single large house, they will not escape. Plague, disease, or starvation will follow, ensuring that no one survives.
Amos 6:10
Verse: And a man’s uncle shall take him up and he that burneth him to bring out the bones out of the house and shall say unto him that is by the sides of the house Is there yet any with thee? and he shall say No Then shall he say Hold thy tongue for we may not make mention of the name of the LORD
English Explanation
This grim verse describes the aftermath of the disaster. So many will die that normal burials are impossible; relatives (like an uncle) must burn the bodies to prevent disease. When searching the dark corners of a house for survivors, the relative asks if anyone else is alive. The lone survivor whispers, “No.” The relative quickly tells him to be quiet and not even mention the name of Yahweh, out of absolute terror that mentioning God’s name might draw His devastating judgment back down upon them.
Amos 6:11
Verse: For behold the LORD commandeth and he will smite the great house with breaches and the little house with clefts
English Explanation
Divine judgment is completely impartial and inescapable. God issues the command, and destruction will follow. The “great house” (the mansions of the rich) will be smashed into ruins, and the “little house” (the homes of the poor) will be cracked open. No social class will be spared from the consequences of the nation’s collective rebellion.
Amos 6:12
Verse: Shall horses run upon the rock? will one plow there with oxen? for ye have turned judgment into gall and the fruit of righteousness into hemlock
English Explanation
Amos uses rhetorical questions about absurdities in nature to highlight the moral absurdity of Israel’s behavior. Horses cannot gallop safely on steep, slippery rocks, nor can a farmer plow a rocky cliff with oxen. Yet, Israel has done something equally unnatural and destructive: they have turned justice into bitterness (“gall”) and the life-giving fruits of righteousness into deadly poison (“hemlock”). They shattered the very foundations of divine law.
Amos 6:13
Verse: Ye which rejoice in a thing of nought which say Have we not taken to us horns by our own strength
English Explanation
The people of Israel were boasting about their recent minor military victories and territorial gains, which Amos dismisses as a “thing of nought” (something worthless and temporary). In their arrogance, they claimed that they gained power (“horns” symbolize military strength in biblical imagery) through their own might, completely forgetting that any success was a temporary mercy from God.
Amos 6:14
Verse: But behold I will raise up against you a nation O house of Israel saith the LORD the God of hosts and they shall afflict you from the entering in of Hamath unto the river of the wilderness
English Explanation
As a direct response to their hollow pride, God declares that He is raising up a foreign superpower (Assyria) to crush them. This invader will oppress and afflict Israel across the entire length of their territory—stretching from Hamath in the far north to the brook of the Arabah (river of the wilderness) in the south. The very borders they boasted of expanding would become the boundaries of their total defeat.
Chapter 7
Amos 7:1
Verse: Thus hath the Lord GOD shewed unto me and behold he formed grasshoppers in the beginning of the shooting up of the latter growth and lo it was the latter growth after the king’s mowings
English Explanation
Chapter 7 shifts into a series of prophetic visions given to Amos. In this first vision, God shows him a swarm of locusts (“grasshoppers”) being formed. They appear right during the “latter growth”—the crucial second harvest of the season. The first harvest (“the king’s mowings”) had already been taken as taxes for the royal court. Therefore, if these locusts destroy this second crop, the common people will face absolute starvation.
Amos 7:2
Verse: And it came to pass that when they had made an end of eating the grass of the land then I said O Lord GOD forgive I beseech thee by whom shall Jacob arise? for he is small
English Explanation
In the vision, the locusts strip the land bare. Realizing the total devastation this means for his people, Amos steps in as an intercessor. He pleads passionately with God, asking for forgiveness for Israel. He argues that “Jacob” (Israel) is too weak, small, and fragile to survive such a crushing economic and agricultural blow.
Amos 7:3
Verse: The LORD repented for this It shall not be saith the LORD
English Explanation
God responds favorably to the prophet’s heartfelt prayer. Out of His immense mercy, the Lord “repents” (relents or changes His planned course of action). He calls off the locust plague, promising that this specific form of total destruction will not happen. This highlights the incredible power of intercessory prayer.
Amos 7:4
Verse: Thus hath the Lord GOD shewed unto me and behold the Lord GOD called to contend by fire and it devoured the great deep and did eat up a part
English Explanation
God presents Amos with a second vision. This time, the judgment is much more severe: a supernatural, consuming fire. This cosmic judgment is so intense that it dries up the “great deep” (the subterranean waters and oceans) and begins consuming the land. It represents total annihilation by war or climate catastrophe.
Amos 7:5
Verse: Then said I O Lord GOD cease I beseech thee by whom shall Jacob arise? for he is small
English Explanation
Just as he did with the locust vision, Amos steps into the gap as a mediator. He begs God to stop (“cease”) the fire, repeating his poignant defense: Israel is too small and fragile to endure such an apocalyptic judgment.
Amos 7:6
Verse: The LORD repented for this This also shall not be saith the Lord GOD
Explanation
Once again, God’s mercy triumphs over immediate wrath in response to the prophet’s intercession. The Lord relents and declares that this devastating fire judgment will also not take place.
Amos 7:7
Verse: Thus he shewed me and behold the Lord stood upon a wall made by a plumbline with a plumbline in his hand
English Explanation
In the third vision, the metaphor changes. Amos sees the Lord standing next to a wall that had been built perfectly straight using a plumb line (a tool used by builders to ensure a wall is perfectly vertical). In His hand, God holds this plumb line. This signifies that God is about to measure Israel against His standard of absolute righteousness and justice.
Amos 7:8
Verse: And the LORD said unto me Amos what seest thou? And I said A plumbline Then said the Lord Behold I will set a plumbline in the midst of my people Israel I will not again pass by them any more
English Explanation
God asks Amos what he sees, and Amos answers directly. God then explains the meaning: He is placing the plumb line in the middle of His people. Israel has warped and crookedly deviated from God’s law. Because they failed the test of alignment with His righteousness, God declares He will no longer “pass by” them—meaning He will no longer spare them or withhold His judgment. Intercession will no longer stop the decree.
Amos 7:9
Verse: And the high places of Isaac shall be desolate and the sanctuaries of Israel shall be laid waste and I will rise against the house of Jeroboam with the sword
English Explanation
The judgment measured by the plumb line targets the core of Israel’s corruption: their false religious centers and corrupt political leadership. The pagan shrines (“high places of Isaac”) and the apostate temples (“sanctuaries of Israel”) will be completely demolished. Furthermore, God promises to bring military destruction (“the sword”) against the royal dynasty of King Jeroboam II.
Amos 7:10
Verse: Then Amaziah the priest of Bethel sent to Jeroboam king of Israel saying Amos hath conspired against thee in the midst of the house of Israel the land is not able to bear all his words
English Explanation
Amos’s bold preaching sparks a backlash from the corrupt religious establishment. Amaziah, the high priest of the state-sponsored golden calf shrine at Bethel, sends a politically charged message to King Jeroboam II. He falsely accuses Amos of treason and conspiracy, exaggerating the threat by claiming that the nation cannot physically endure or tolerate Amos’s disruptive prophecies.
Amos 7:11
Verse: For thus Amos saith Jeroboam shall die by the sword and Israel shall surely be led away captive out of their own land
English Explanation
Amaziah twists Amos’s prophetic words to make them sound like personal treason against the crown. He tells the king that Amos is predicting Jeroboam’s death by the sword and the absolute exile of the entire population of Israel. While Amos did prophesy exile and judgment on the house of Jeroboam, Amaziah frames it maliciously to incite the king’s wrath.
Amos 7:12
Verse: Also Amaziah said unto Amos O thou seer go flee thee away into the land of Judah and there eat bread and prophesy there
English Explanation
Turning directly to Amos, Amaziah tries to banish and silence him. He mockingly addresses him as a “seer” (prophet) and tells him to run back home to the southern kingdom of Judah. Amaziah condescendingly implies that Amos is only prophesying for money (“eat bread”) and tells him to go earn his living making predictions somewhere else where people might actually want to hear it.
