Chapter 7
Amos 7:13
Verse: But prophesy not again any more at Bethel for it is the king’s chapel and it is the king’s court.
English Explanation: Amaziah, the priest of Bethel, orders the prophet Amos to stop preaching his messages of doom. Bethel was a state-sanctioned sanctuary established by the king of Israel, not the true temple of God in Jerusalem. Amaziah views religion purely through a political lens, claiming that because it is the king’s sanctuary and royal court, words that upset the political peace or criticize the king cannot be tolerated. It shows how the religious establishment favored political comfort over divine truth.
Amos 7:14
Verse: Then answered Amos and said to Amaziah I was no prophet neither was I a prophet’s son but I was an herdman and a gatherer of sycomore fruit
English Explanation: Amos defends his credentials. He clarifies that he is not a professional prophet by trade, nor did he attend a “school of prophets” (a prophet’s son). He was an ordinary working-class man—a shepherd and a tender of sycamore-fig trees. Amos emphasizes that his authority does not come from human training or a career path, but directly from God’s unexpected interruption in his daily life.
Amos 7:15
Verse: And the LORD took me as I followed the flock and the LORD said unto me Go prophesy unto my people Israel.
English Explanation: Amos explains his divine commission. While he was simply following his flock, Yahweh laid hold of him and gave him a direct command: “Go, prophesy to My people Israel.” This highlights that a true prophet cannot be silenced by human authorities because they answer to a higher divine mandate. Amos had no choice but to speak what God commanded.
Amos 7:16
Verse: Now therefore hear thou the word of the LORD Thou sayest Prophesy not against Israel and drop not thy word against the house of Isaac.
English Explanation: Amos directly addresses Amaziah. The priest had commanded Amos to stop “dropping” (preaching) words against Israel and the house of Isaac (a synonym for the northern kingdom). Amos sets up a direct clash of authorities: Amaziah says “Do not speak,” but God says “Listen to what is about to happen because you tried to silence the truth.”
Amos 7:17
Verse: Therefore thus saith the LORD Thy wife shall be an harlot in the city and thy sons and thy daughters shall fall by the sword and thy land shall be divided by line and thou shalt die in a polluted land and Israel shall surely go into captivity forth of his land.
English Explanation: Because Amaziah tried to suppress God’s word, Amos delivers a devastating personal prophecy against him alongside the national judgment. When the Assyrians invade, Amaziah’s wife will be forced into destitution/prostitution, his children will be slaughtered, his private property will be divided among invaders, and he will die in exile in a pagan (“polluted”) land. Furthermore, the captivity of Israel is absolutely guaranteed.
Chapter 8
Amos 8:1
Verse: Thus hath the Lord GOD shewed unto me and behold a basket of summer fruit.
English Explanation: God grants Amos his fourth vision: a basket filled with ripe summer fruit. While summer fruit looks pleasant and harvest-ready, it represents something else in prophetic symbolism. Summer fruit is picked at the very end of the agricultural season; it cannot sit out long without rotting, signaling that the timeline for Israel has run out.
Amos 8:2
Verse: And he said Amos what seest thou? And I said A basket of summer fruit. Then said the LORD unto me The end is come upon my people of Israel I will not again pass by them any more.
English Explanation: God asks Amos what he sees, and Amos answers correctly. God then uses a powerful Hebrew wordplay (between qayits meaning summer fruit, and qets meaning the end). God declares that “the end” has arrived for Israel. His patience has run out, and He will no longer overlook or spare them from judgment.
Amos 8:3
Verse: And the songs of the temple shall be howlings in that day saith the Lord GOD there shall be many dead bodies in every place they shall cast them forth with silence.
English Explanation: The mood of the nation will instantly shift from joyful religious celebrations to mourning. The songs sung in their temples will turn into cries of agony and wailing. Due to war and plague, dead bodies will be scattered everywhere. The devastation will be so overwhelming that the dead will be thrown out in absolute, traumatized silence without any proper funeral rites.
Amos 8:4
Verse: Hear this O ye that swallow up the needy even to make the poor of the land to fail
English Explanation: God addresses the corrupt wealthy elite who exploit the vulnerable. They are described as “swallowing up” or trampling the needy. Their greed directly aims to eliminate the poor from having a livelihood, destroying their economic survival through unfair systemic practices.
Amos 8:5
Verse: Saying When will the new moon be gone that we may sell corn? and the sabbath that we may set forth wheat making the ephah small and the shekel great and falsifying the balances by deceit?
English Explanation: This verse exposes the heart of the corrupt merchants. They observe religious days like the New Moon and the Sabbath, but they hate them because business stops. They cannot wait for holy days to end so they can cheat people again—by using a smaller measuring basket (ephah) to give less grain, charging a heavier price (shekel), and using rigged scales.
Amos 8:6
Verse: That we may buy the poor for silver and the needy for a pair of shoes yea and sell the refuse of the wheat?
English Explanation: The merchants are so ruthless that they exploit human desperation. If a poor person cannot pay a tiny debt (even the price of a pair of sandals), they buy them into debt slavery. To maximize profits, they even sweep up the chaff and waste material from the floor (“the refuse of the wheat”) and sell it as good grain to the unsuspecting poor.
Amos 8:7
Verse: The LORD hath sworn by the excellency of Jacob Surely I will never forget any of their works.
English Explanation: God swears a solemn oath by Himself (“the excellency of Jacob”). He reassures that none of these wicked deeds, social injustices, and acts of greed will ever be forgotten or ignored. Justice will eventually be served, and accountability is guaranteed.
Amos 8:8
Verse: Shall not the land tremble for this and every one mourn that dwelleth therein? and it shall rise up wholly as a flood and it shall be cast out and drowned as by the flood of Egypt.
English Explanation: The physical earth itself responds to the moral corruption of the people. God describes judgment like a massive earthquake or an unstoppable flood, comparing it to the yearly overflowing of the Nile River in Egypt. The entire land will heave, rise, and be thrown into complete chaos and mourning because of their sins.
Amos 8:9
Verse: And it shall come to pass in that day saith the Lord GOD that I will cause the sun to go down at noon and I will darken the earth in the clear day
English Explanation: God promises cosmic signs of judgment. He will cause the sun to set at noon, plunging the earth into darkness during broad daylight. While this can historically refer to literal solar eclipses that occurred around that time, prophetically it signifies the sudden, unexpected arrival of tragedy and the loss of God’s favor when they feel most secure.
Amos 8:10
Verse: And I will turn your feasts into mourning and all your songs into lamentation and I will bring up sackcloth upon all loins and baldness upon every head and I will make it as the mourning of an only son and the end thereof as a bitter day.
English Explanation: All joyous religious festivals will instantly transform into funeral services. Instead of wearing beautiful clothes, everyone will wear sackcloth (a sign of deep grief), and shave their heads in mourning. The sorrow will be deep and agonizing, comparable to parents losing their only son, ending in absolute bitterness.
Amos 8:11
Verse: Behold the days come saith the Lord GOD that I will send a famine in the land not a famine of bread nor a thirst for water but of hearing the words of the LORD
English Explanation: This is one of the most sobering verses in the book. God declares a unique spiritual famine. It is not a lack of physical food or water, but a famine of hearing the word of God. Because Israel repeatedly rejected and silenced the prophets, God will pull back His voice, leaving them without guidance when they need it most.
Amos 8:12
Verse: And they shall wander from sea to sea and from the north even to the east they shall run to and fro to seek the word of the LORD and shall not find it.
English Explanation: In desperation during the crisis, people will travel all over the world—from the Dead Sea to the Mediterranean, from north to east—searching for a true prophetic word or direction from God. However, because they rejected it when it was freely available, they will find nothing but silence.
Amos 8:13
Verse: In that day shall the fair virgins and young men faint for thirst.
English Explanation: Even the strongest, most resilient, and vibrant members of society—the young men and beautiful young women—will collapse from this intense physical and spiritual thirst. If the young and strong cannot survive the spiritual and physical drought, the entire society is doomed.
Amos 8:14
Verse: They that swear by the sin of Samaria and say Thy god O Dan liveth and The manner of Beer-sheba liveth even they shall fall and never rise up again.
English Explanation: This verse targets those who worship idols. The “sin of Samaria” refers to the golden calves set up by the kings. People swore oaths by the false gods at Dan and Beersheba. Because they put their trust in dead idols rather than the living God, they will fall catastrophically during the invasion and never recover.
Chapter 9
Amos 9:1
Verse: I saw the LORD standing upon the altar and he said Smite the lintel of the door that the posts may shake and cut them in the head all of them and I will slay the last of them with the sword he that fleeth of them shall not flee away and he that escapeth of them shall not be delivered.
English Explanation: Amos receives his fifth and final vision. He sees God standing right next to the sacrificial altar (likely at Bethel), commanding destruction. God orders the temple structures to be smashed down upon the heads of the false worshippers. The temple, which they thought was a safe haven, becomes their tomb. There is absolutely no escape; those who survive the collapsing building will fall by the sword of invaders.
Amos 9:2
Verse: Though they dig into hell thence shall mine hand take them though they climb up to heaven thence will I bring them down
English Explanation: God emphasizes the absolute impossibility of hiding from His judgment. Even if they could dig deep down into Sheol (the realm of the dead/hell) or climb up into the highest heavens, God’s reach is omnipresent. Human beings cannot find a single corner in the universe to escape divine accountability.
Amos 9:3
Verse: And though they hide themselves in the top of Carmel I will search and take them out thence and though they be hid from my sight in the bottom of the sea thence will I command the serpent and he shall bite them
English Explanation: Mount Carmel was famous for its thick forests, caves, and places to hide, while the deep ocean floor represents total invisibility. God states that even if they hide in the thickest brush of Carmel or on the dark floor of the ocean, He will find them. He will even command the creatures of the deep (the serpent) to strike them. Judgment is inescapable.
