Chapter 1
Ec 1 1
Verse: The words of the Preacher the son of David king in Jerusalem
-
English Explanation: This introductory verse establishes the authorship and authority of the book. The “Preacher” (traditionally translated from the Hebrew word Qoheleth, meaning one who convokes an assembly) identifies himself as a son of King David and a ruler in Jerusalem. This points directly to King Solomon, renowned for his unmatched wisdom, wealth, and power, setting the stage for a deeply philosophical exploration of life.
-
Ec 1 2
Verse: Vanity of vanities saith the Preacher vanity of vanities all is vanity
-
English Explanation: This is the core thesis of Ecclesiastes. The phrase “vanity of vanities” is a Hebrew superlative meaning the uttermost vanity. The word “vanity” (hebel) literally translates to vapor, breath, or something transitory and fleeting. The Preacher is stating that from a purely earthly perspective, human efforts and worldly pursuits are temporary, fragile, and ultimately devoid of lasting substance.
-
Ec 1 3
Verse: What profit hath a man of all his labour which he taketh under the sun
-
English Explanation: The Preacher introduces the phrase “under the sun,” which refers to life lived strictly on a physical, horizontal level without considering the eternal or the divine. He asks a rhetorical question regarding what permanent, ultimate advantage or profit a person gains from all their grueling hard work if everything eventually passes away.
-
Ec 1 4
Verse: One generation passeth away and another generation cometh but the earth abideth for ever
-
English Explanation: This verse highlights the transience of human life compared to the relative permanence of creation. Human generations come and go in a rapid, continuous cycle, yet the earth remains seemingly unchanged. It shows how small and fleeting an individual human existence is against the backdrop of time.
-
Ec 1 5
Verse: The sun also ariseth and the sun goeth down and hasteth to his place where he arose
-
English Explanation: To illustrate the repetitive, cyclical nature of the world, the Preacher points to the sun. It rises, sets, and hurries back to repeat the exact same process day after day. It symbolizes the wearying, endless routine of nature that achieves no ultimate finality.
-
Ec 1 6
Verse: The wind goeth toward the south and turneth about unto the north it whirleth about continually and the wind returneth again according to his circuits
-
English Explanation: The wind is used here as another metaphor for purposeless, repetitive movement. It blows south, turns north, spins constantly, and always returns to its starting cycles. Despite all its violent activity and motion, it essentially goes nowhere new.
-
Ec 1 7
Verse: All the rivers run into the sea yet the sea is not full unto the place from whence the rivers come thither they return again
-
English Explanation: The water cycle is described to show the same ongoing, unfulfilled cycle. Rivers continuously flow into the ocean, yet the ocean is never overflowing. The waters evaporate, return to the sources, and flow again. The Preacher uses this to mirror human desire—always consuming, but never truly satisfied.
-
Ec 1 8
Verse: All things are full of labour man cannot utter it the eye is not satisfied with seeing nor the ear filled with hearing
-
English Explanation: Life is filled with a wearisome effort that words cannot fully describe. The Preacher notes that human senses are inherently insatiable; no matter how much the eye sees or the ear hears, it is never enough. Human nature is plagued by a constant restlessness for more.
-
Ec 1 9
Verse: The thing that hath been it is that which shall be and that which is done is that which shall be done and there is no new thing under the sun
-
English Explanation: History merely repeats itself. Human nature, endeavors, conflicts, and achievements remain essentially unchanged throughout time. True novelty does not exist on the earthly plane (“under the sun”); what modern generations look at as brand new is just a variation of what came before.
-
Ec 1 10
Verse: Is there any thing whereof it may be said See this is new it hath been already of old time which was before us
-
English Explanation: The Preacher challenges the reader to point out anything genuinely unique and unprecedented. He asserts that whatever we think is entirely original has already existed in the vast ages that preceded us, emphasizing the cyclical entrapment of human history.
-
Ec 1 11
Verse: There is no remembrance of former things neither shall there be any remembrance of things that are to come with those that shall come after
-
English Explanation: The reason people believe things are new is due to poor memory and historical amnesia. Past generations and their deeds are largely forgotten, and future generations will likewise be forgotten by those who follow them. Ultimate worldly fame is an illusion.
-
Ec 1 12
Verse: I the Preacher was king over Israel in Jerusalem
-
English Explanation: Here, the author reiterates his identity and socio-political standing. He was not an outsider looking in, but the ruler of Israel, located in Jerusalem—the political and spiritual heart of the nation. He possessed all the resources necessary to conduct an exhaustive study of life.
-
Ec 1 13
Verse: And I gave my heart to seek and search out by wisdom concerning all things that are done under heaven this sore travail hath God given to the sons of man to be exercised therewith
-
English Explanation: Solomon applied his immense intellectual capacities to analyze human behavior and earthly experiences. He concludes that this drive to seek answers and labor through life is a heavy burden (“sore travail”) assigned by God to keep humanity occupied.
-
Ec 1 14
Verse: I have seen all the works that are done under the sun and behold all is vanity and vexation of spirit
-
English Explanation: After surveying everything human beings achieve, build, and experience, the Preacher gives his verdict: it is all vanity and “vexation of spirit” (which can be translated as chasing after the wind). It yields nothing substantial and leads to frustration.
-
Ec 1 15
Verse: That which is crooked cannot be made straight and that which is wanting cannot be numbered
-
English Explanation: Human wisdom and effort have strict limitations. There are flaws in the world, injustices, and broken systems that humans simply cannot correct (“cannot be made straight”). Similarly, what is missing or lacking in life cannot be filled or counted by human means alone.
-
Ec 1 16
Verse: I communed with mine own heart saying Lo I am come to great estate and have gotten more wisdom than all they that have been before me in Jerusalem yea my heart had great experience of wisdom and knowledge
-
English Explanation: Speaking to himself, Solomon acknowledges his unique position. He achieved immense status and acquired greater wisdom than any leader before him in Jerusalem. He possessed both the theoretical knowledge and the life experiences to back up his conclusions.
-
Ec 1 17
Verse: And I gave my heart to know wisdom and to know madness and folly I perceived that this also is vexation of spirit
-
English Explanation: Solomon did not just study good things; he looked at the entire spectrum of human behavior, including madness and foolishness, to understand life completely. Yet, even this exhaustive psychological and philosophical pursuit felt like trying to grasp the wind.
-
Ec 1 18
Verse: For in much wisdom is much grief and he that increaseth knowledge increaseth sorrow
-
English Explanation: The chapter concludes with a sobering reality: intellectual advancement does not guarantee happiness. The more a person truly understands the world, the more they notice its brokenness, injustice, and tragic nature, leading to deeper sorrow and grief.
-
Chapter 2
Ec 2 1
Verse: I said in mine heart Go to now I will prove thee with mirth therefore enjoy pleasure and behold this also is vanity
-
English Explanation: Turning away from pure intellectual pursuit, Solomon decides to test hedonism and pleasure. He tells himself to enjoy life, laughter, and entertainment to see if joy can provide ultimate fulfillment. However, he quickly concludes that this, too, is empty and meaningless.
-
Ec 2 2
Verse: I said of laughter It is mad and of mirth What doeth it
-
English Explanation: Solomon analyzes lighthearted entertainment and laughter. He views excessive, empty laughter as a form of temporary madness because it merely masks the deeper problems of life without solving them. It produces nothing lasting or substantial.
-
Ec 2 3
Verse: I sought in mine heart to give myself unto wine yet acquainting mine heart with wisdom and to lay hold on folly till I might see what was that good for the sons of men which they should do under the heaven all the days of their life
-
English Explanation: Solomon experiments with substance and luxury (wine) while trying to keep his analytical mind sharp. He wanted to sample foolish, carefree living firsthand just to discover what genuinely brings happiness to humans during their short time on earth.
-
Ec 2 4
Verse: I made me great works I builded me houses I planted me vineyards
-
English Explanation: Solomon turns to massive physical achievements and grand architecture. He built spectacular palaces and established expansive vineyards, seeking fulfillment in creativity, ownership, and leaves a physical legacy.
-
Ec 2 5
Verse: I made me gardens and orchards and I planted trees in them of all kind of fruits
-
English Explanation: He expanded his projects to include beautiful, royal parks, botanical gardens, and orchards filled with every variety of fruit-bearing tree. This was an attempt to create a private paradise on earth.
-
Urdu Explanation:
Ec 2 6
Verse: I made me pools of water to water therewith the wood that bringeth forth trees
-
English Explanation: To sustain his massive green developments and forests, he engineered sophisticated irrigation systems and large water reservoirs. This shows his absolute command over resources and environment.
-
Urdu Explanation:
Ec 2 7
Verse: I got me servants and maidens and had servants born in my house also I had great possessions of great and small cattle above all that were in Jerusalem before me
-
English Explanation: Solomon acquired vast human resources, purchasing slaves and employing staff, creating a self-sustaining royal household. He also owned herds of livestock larger than anyone in Jerusalem’s history, showcasing supreme wealth.
-
Ec 2 8
Verse: I gathered me also silver and gold and the peculiar treasure of kings and of the provinces I gat me men singers and women singers and the delights of the sons of men as musical instruments and that of all sorts
-
English Explanation: He accumulated massive financial wealth from taxes, tribute, and trade, collecting rare treasures from foreign lands. He also indulged in cultural luxuries, employing vocalists and gathering musical instruments of every kind for entertainment.
-
Ec 2 9
Verse: So I was great and increased more than all that were before me in Jerusalem also my wisdom remained with me
-
English Explanation: Solomon achieved unprecedented status, eclipsing every previous ruler in wealth and prestige. Crucially, throughout this experimental phase of indulgence, he maintained his cognitive abilities and critical thinking to judge the process.
-
Ec 2 10
Verse: And whatsoever mine eyes desired I kept not from them I withheld not my heart from any joy for my heart rejoiced in all my labour and this was my portion of all my labour
-
English Explanation: He denied himself absolutely nothing. If he saw it or thought of it, he acquired it. He felt a temporary satisfaction while working on these projects, and this fleeting enjoyment was his immediate reward or “portion” at the time.
-
Ec 2 11
Verse: Then I looked on all the works that my hands had wrought and on the labour that I had laboured to do and behold all was vanity and vexation of spirit and there was no profit under the sun
-
English Explanation: When Solomon stepped back to objectively review everything he had built, bought, and experienced, reality set in. Stripped of eternal value, all his achievements were a chasing after the wind. In the grand scheme of life “under the sun,” there was no lasting, ultimate benefit.
-
