Esther Chapter

Part 1: Nehemiah Chapter 13 (Verses 24–31)

Nehemiah 13:24

  • Verse: And their children spake half in the speech of Ashdod and could not speak in the Jews’ language but according to the language of each people.

  • English Explanation: Nehemiah observed that intermarriages between Jews and neighboring pagan nations (like Ashdod, Ammon, and Moab) were eroding the cultural and spiritual identity of the next generation. The children could no longer speak Hebrew—the language of the Holy Scriptures—which meant they could not properly learn God’s laws or participate in temple worship.

Nehemiah 13:25

  • Verse: And I contended with them and cursed them and smote certain of them and plucked off their hair and made them swear by God saying Ye shall not give your daughters unto their sons nor take their daughters unto your sons or for yourselves.

  • English Explanation: Outraged by this blatant disobedience to God’s covenant, Nehemiah took extreme disciplinary actions. He confronted the people, pronounced legal curses, physically punished some, and made them take a solemn oath before God to stop intermarrying with idol-worshipping communities.

Nehemiah 13:26

  • Verse: Did not Solomon king of Israel sin by these things? yet among many nations was there no king like him who was beloved of his God and God made him king over all Israel nevertheless even him did outlandish women cause to sin.

  • English Explanation: Nehemiah uses King Solomon as a historical warning. Solomon was wise, blessed, and deeply loved by God, yet his foreign, idol-worshipping wives eventually led him into apostasy. If the greatest king could fall due to these compromised unions, the common people stood no chance.

Nehemiah 13:27

  • Verse: Shall we then hearken unto you to do all this great evil to transgress against our God in marrying strange wives?

  • English Explanation: Nehemiah poses a rhetorical question, emphasizing that allowing this practice to continue is an act of supreme treason against God. He demands that the community reject this sin entirely to avoid the divine judgment that historically ruined their ancestors.

Nehemiah 13:28

  • Verse: And one of the sons of Joiada the son of Eliashib the high priest was son in law to Sanballat the Horonite therefore I chased him from me.

  • English Explanation: The corruption had reached the highest level of leadership. A grandson of the High Priest Eliashib had married the daughter of Sanballat, one of the primary enemies of Israel’s restoration. Because this priest polluted his holy office by forming an alliance with an enemy, Nehemiah banished him from Jerusalem.

Nehemiah 13:29

  • Verse: Remember them O my God because they have defiled the priesthood and the covenant of the priesthood and of the Levites.

  • English Explanation: Nehemiah prays to God to hold these unfaithful leaders accountable. The priesthood was meant to be holy and set apart; by marrying pagans, they violated the unique covenant God made with the Levites and the house of Aaron.

Nehemiah 13:30

  • Verse: Thus cleansed I them from all strangers and appointed the wards of the priests and the Levites every one in his business;

  • English Explanation: Nehemiah successfully purged foreign religious practices and pagan influences from the community. He re-organized the administrative duties of the priests and Levites, ensuring that every minister was back at his specific post, doing holy work.

Nehemiah 13:31

  • Verse: And for the wood offering at times appointed and for the firstfruits. Remember me O my God for good.

  • English Explanation: Nehemiah restored structural order, securing the regular supply of wood needed for temple sacrifices and the fair distribution of the firstfruits. He concludes his memoir with a famous prayer, asking God to remember his faithful service and dedication to His kingdom.

Part 2: Esther Chapter 1 (Verses 1–14)

Esther 1:1

  • Verse: Now it came to pass in the days of Ahasuerus (this is Ahasuerus which reigned from India even unto Ethiopia over an hundred and seven and twenty provinces)

  • English Explanation: The Book of Esther begins during the reign of the Persian King Ahasuerus (historically identified as Xerxes I). This verse establishes his immense political power, noting that his vast empire stretched from India to Ethiopia, encompassing $127$ distinct provinces.

Esther 1:2

  • Verse: That in those days when the king Ahasuerus sat on the throne of his kingdom which was in Shushan the palace

  • English Explanation: The verse sets the geographical location of the story. King Ahasuerus was established securely on his royal throne in Shushan (Susa), which served as one of the major administrative and winter capitals of the Persian Empire.

Esther 1:3

  • Verse: In the third year of his reign he made a feast unto all his princes and his servants; the power of Persia and Media the nobles and princes of the provinces being before him

  • English Explanation: In his third year on the throne, the king hosted a massive banqueting convention. He gathered the entire political and military elite of his kingdom, including the leaders of Persia and Media, to demonstrate solidarity and assert his supreme authority.

Esther 1:4

  • Verse: When he shewed the riches of his glorious kingdom and the honour of his excellent majesty many days even an hundred and fourscore days.

  • English Explanation: The display of royal wealth and imperial power was not a single evening event; it lasted for $180$ days (six months). This extended period allowed regional officials from all over the massive empire to visit, witness the king’s unimaginable wealth, and pledge their loyalty.

Esther 1:5

  • Verse: And when these days were expired the king made a feast unto all the people that were present in Shushan the palace both unto great and small seven days in the court of the garden of the king’s palace;

  • English Explanation: After the six-month convention for the ruling elite, the king threw a second, week-long ($7$ days) feast. This celebration was open to everyone living in the capital city of Shushan, regardless of social status, and was held in the beautiful outer gardens of the palace.

Esther 1:6

  • Verse: Where were white green and blue hangings fastened with cords of fine linen and purple to silver rings and pillars of marble the beds were of gold and silver upon a pavement of red and blue and white and black marble.

  • English Explanation: This verse vividly details the luxury of the Persian court. It describes expensive linen tapestries of white, green, and blue, marble pillars, silver rings, and couches made of solid gold and silver set upon an intricately patterned mosaic floor of multi-colored marble.

Esther 1:7

  • Verse: And they gave them drink in vessels of gold (the vessels being diverse one from another) and royal wine in abundance according to the state of the king.

  • English Explanation: To emphasize total extravagance, drinks were served exclusively in unique, custom-crafted golden cups. The royal wine flowed without limits, displaying the boundless hospitality and immense economic capacity of the king.

Esther 1:8

  • Verse: And the drinking was according to the law; none did compel for so the king had appointed to all the officers of his house that they should do according to every man’s pleasure.

  • Explanation: By imperial decree, the usual custom of forcing guests to drink at the host’s command was suspended. The king commanded his servers to let every individual guest drink as much or as little as they personally desired, adding to the relaxed atmosphere of luxury.

Esther 1:9

  • Verse: Also Vashti the queen made a feast for the women in the royal house which belonged to king Ahasuerus.

  • English Explanation: While King Ahasuerus hosted the men in the palace gardens, Queen Vashti hosted a parallel, private banquet inside the residential quarters of the royal palace specifically for the women of Shushan.

Esther 1:10

  • Verse: On the seventh day when the heart of the king was merry with wine he commanded Mehuman Biztha Harbona Bigtha and Abagtha Zethar and Carcas the seven chamberlains that served in the presence of Ahasuerus the king

  • English Explanation: On the final day of the week-long feast, heavily intoxicated by wine, the king’s judgment became impaired. He summoned his seven trusted personal eunuchs (chamberlains) to execute a royal command born out of vanity and pride.

Esther 1:11

  • Verse: To bring Vashti the queen before the king with the crown royal to shew the people and the princes her beauty for she was fair to look on.

  • English Explanation: The king ordered his queen to be brought before a crowd of drunken men wearing only her royal crown, treating her as a possession to showcase her physical beauty to the visiting dignitaries and subjects.

Esther 1:12

  • Verse: But the queen Vashti refused to come at the king’s commandment by his chamberlains therefore was the king very wroth and his anger burned in him.

  • English Explanation: Recognizing the request as undignified, Queen Vashti publicly defied the absolute monarch’s decree. This refusal deeply humiliated Ahasuerus in front of his entire political court, causing him to fly into a blind rage.

Esther 1:13

  • Verse: Then the king said to the wise men which knew the times (for so was the king’s manner toward all that knew law and judgment

  • English Explanation: Unable to control his anger but bound by Persian protocol, the king did not act impulsively. He consulted his inner council of astrologers, legal experts, and historians (“men who knew the times”) to figure out the legal procedure for handling this unprecedented royal rebellion.

Esther 1:14

  • Verse: And the next unto him was Carshena Shethar Admatha Tarshish Meres Marsena and Memucan the seven princes of Persia and Media which saw the king’s face and which sat the first in the kingdom;)

  • English Explanation: This verse identifies the specific names of the seven elite noble princes of Persia and Media. These men formed the supreme advisory cabinet, possessed the unique privilege of immediate access to the king’s presence, and held the highest judicial and executive authority in the empire.
