Ezekiel Chapter

Verse-by-Verse Commentary & Explanation

Ezekiel 20:45

Verse: Moreover the word of the LORD came unto me saying

  • English Explanation: This verse serves as a formal introductory formula common in prophetic literature. It establishes the divine authority of the message Ezekiel is about to deliver. It is not Ezekiel’s personal opinion or philosophical deduction; it is a direct revelation from God Himself, underscoring the absolute certainty and weight of the impending judgment.

Ezekiel 20:46

Verse: Son of man set thy face toward the south and drop thy word toward the south and prophesy against the forest of the south field

  • English Explanation: God addresses Ezekiel as “Son of man,” emphasizing his human frailty in contrast to divine majesty. He is told to look “toward the south” (the Negev region and Judah/Jerusalem relative to Babylon). The “forest of the south field” is a poetic metaphor for the dense population and leaders of Jerusalem who think they are secure but are about to face a sweeping judgment.

Ezekiel 20:47

Verse: And say to the forest of the south Hear the word of the LORD Thus saith the Lord GOD Behold I will kindle a fire in thee and it shall devour every green tree in thee and every dry tree the flaming flame shall not be quenched and all faces from the south to the north shall be burned therein

  • English Explanation: The “fire” represents God’s consuming judgment, carried out by the invading Babylonian army. The fire devours both “every green tree” (the righteous or prosperous) and “every dry tree” (the wicked or spiritually dead), showing that the national catastrophe will spare no class of society. The unquenchable nature of the flame stresses that human efforts cannot stop this divine decree, affecting the entire land from south to north.

Ezekiel 20:48

Verse: And all flesh shall see that I the LORD have kindled it it shall not be quenched

  • English Explanation: The scale of Jerusalem’s destruction will be so undeniable that all surrounding nations (“all flesh”) will recognize it as a deliberate act of divine sovereignty. It serves as a global testimony that Yahweh is a holy God who punishes unfaithfulness, and that no earthly superpower can put out the fire He ignites.

Ezekiel 20:49

Verse: Then said I Ah Lord GOD! they say of me Doth he not speak parables?

  • English Explanation: Ezekiel voices his frustration to God. The people of Israel are dismissing his severe warnings as mere artistic allegories, riddles, or complex metaphors rather than literal warnings. By treating his prophecies as entertaining but irrelevant “parables,” they harden their hearts and justify ignoring his call to repentance.

Ezekiel 21:1

Verse: And the word of the LORD came unto me saying

  • English Explanation: Chapter 21 begins with a repetition of the divine reception formula. This signals a transition from the metaphorical language of the “burning forest” in the previous chapter to a direct, blunt explanation of what that fire actually represents: a literal sword of judgment.

Ezekiel 21:2

Verse: Son of man set thy face toward Jerusalem and drop thy word toward the holy places and prophesy against the land of Israel

  • English Explanation: God strips away the metaphor. Instead of the ambiguous “forest of the south,” Ezekiel is now explicitly commanded to name the targets: Jerusalem, the holy sanctuaries/temple, and the land of Israel. This removes any excuse the people had to claim they didn’t understand his “parables.”

Ezekiel 21:3

Verse: And say to the land of Israel Thus saith the LORD Behold I am against thee and will draw forth my sword out of his sheath and will cut off from thee the righteous and the wicked

  • English Explanation: God declares Himself as an adversary to His own people because of their persistent covenant failures (“I am against thee”). The metaphor of the fire is replaced with the “sword”—representing military invasion and slaughter. The cutting off of both the righteous and the wicked mirrors the green and dry trees, showing that a nationwide political collapse ruins the lives of all residents indiscriminately.

Ezekiel 21:4

Verse: Seeing then that I will cut off from thee the righteous and the wicked therefore shall my sword go forth out of his sheath against all flesh from the south to the north

  • English Explanation: Because the judgment is thorough and complete, the devastation will sweep across the entire geographic expanse of the land, from the southern borders to the northern boundaries. No region of the promised land will escape the sweeping reach of God’s instruments of punishment.

  • Urdu Explanation:

Ezekiel 21:5

Verse: That all flesh may know that I the LORD have drawn forth my sword out of his sheath it shall not return any more

  • English Explanation: The objective of this absolute devastation is universal recognition of Yahweh’s authority. The statement that the sword “shall not return any more” means it will not be sheathed until its assigned work of destruction and dismantling of the corrupt Judean state is entirely finished.

Ezekiel 21:6

Verse: Sigh therefore thou son of man with the breaking of thy loins and with bitterness sigh before their eyes

  • English Explanation: Ezekiel is commanded to perform a dramatic, physical sign. He must sigh with an intensity that strains his body (“breaking of thy loins”) and filled with deep sorrow in public view. His physical grief is meant to shock the onlookers and serve as a living prophetic model of the overwhelming panic and grief that is coming upon the nation.

Ezekiel 21:7

Verse: And it shall be when they say unto thee Wherefore sighest thou? that thou shalt answer For the tidings because it cometh and every heart shall melt and all hands shall be feeble and every spirit shall faint and all knees shall be weak as water behold it cometh and shall be brought to pass saith the Lord GOD

  • English Explanation: When the people ask why Ezekiel is grieving so intensely, he is to tell them it is due to the incoming news (“tidings”) of the Babylonian army’s approach. The response describes total psychological collapse: courage melting away, hands losing their strength, morale fainting, and knees turning weak as water out of absolute terror.

Ezekiel 21:8

Verse: Again the word of the LORD came unto me saying

  • English Explanation: A fresh divine impulse initiates another section of the prophecy. This introduces the famous “Song of the Sword,” emphasizing the active readiness of the weapon that God has authorized for Jerusalem’s destruction.

  • Urdu Explanation:

Ezekiel 21:9

Verse: Son of man prophesy and say Thus saith the LORD Say A sword a sword is sharpened and also furbished

  • English Explanation: The repetition of “A sword a sword” creates a sense of imminent danger and alarm. The weapon is not blunt or rusty; it is “sharpened” for killing and “furbished” (polished) to glint in the light, symbolizing that the execution of judgment is immediate, lethal, and fully prepared.

Ezekiel 21:10

Verse: It is sharpened to make a sore slaughter it is furbished that it may glitter should we then make mirth? it contemneth the rod of my son as every tree

  • English Explanation: The sword is prepared for a massive slaughter. God asks a rhetorical question: given this horrific reality, should the people be celebrating (“make mirth”)? The Judean people relied on the royal scepter (“rod of my son”) and God’s covenant with David for protection, but this sword despises/contemns that privilege, treating it no better than a common piece of wood (“as every tree”) due to their gross sins.

Ezekiel 21:11

Verse: And he hath given it to be furbished that it may be handled this sword is sharpened and it is furbished to give it into the hand of the slayer

  • English Explanation: God has intentionally prepared this weapon to be used effectively. The “slayer” represents Nebuchadnezzar, the King of Babylon. God is sovereignly handing the instrument of execution over to the earthly empire destined to carry out His divine sentence.

Ezekiel 21:12

Verse: Cry and howl son of man for it shall be upon my people it shall be upon all the princes of Israel terrors by reason of the sword shall be upon my people smite therefore upon thy thigh

  • English Explanation: Ezekiel is instructed to vocalize and physicalize the communal grief by crying, howling, and striking his thigh (an ancient gesture of deep dismay and mourning). The disaster will not just hit the lower classes; it will strike the elite “princes of Israel” as well, inducing nationwide terror.

Ezekiel 21:13

Verse: Because it is a trial and what if the sword contemn even the rod? it shall be no more saith the Lord GOD

  • English Explanation: This crisis is an ultimate testing time (“trial”) for Israel. The verse warns that if the invading sword utterly despises and overthrows the royal scepter (the Davidic monarchy/rod), that independent kingship will cease to exist. History confirms this, as the independent Davidic throne ended with the Babylonian exile.

Ezekiel 21:14

Verse: Thou therefore son of man prophesy and smite thine hands together and let the sword be doubled the third time the sword of the slain it is the sword of the great men that are slain which entereth into their privy chambers

  • English Explanation: Clapping hands together represents God’s righteous indignation and a call to battle. The doubling and tripling of the sword suggests an escalation of military intensity, absolute devastation, and repeated invasions. No one can hide; the sword will pursue even the elite into their most private, secure inner rooms (“privy chambers”).

Ezekiel 21:15

Verse: I have set the point of the sword against all their gates that their heart may faint and their ruins be multiplied ah! it is made bright it is wrapped up for the slaughter

  • English Explanation: The sword is deployed at “all their gates,” meaning all entry points and defensive fortifications of the cities are compromised. This layout ensures absolute panic, crushing their courage (“heart may faint”) and leading to massive structural destruction and casualties.

Ezekiel 21:16

Verse: Go thee one way or other either on the right hand or on the left whithersoever thy face is set

  • English Explanation: Personifying the sword, God commands it to slash in every direction without restriction—right or left. It denotes the thorough, all-encompassing nature of the military assault; wherever the enemy turns, execution and destruction will take place.

Ezekiel 21:17

Verse: I will also smite mine hands together and I will cause my fury to rest I the LORD have said it

  • English Explanation: God Himself strikes His hands together, demonstrating His divine approval and execution of this judgment. His fury will “rest” only when the purification and punishment of the unfaithful nation are fully accomplished, cementing the absolute unchangeability of His decree.

Ezekiel 21:18

Verse: The word of the LORD came unto me again saying

  • English Explanation: This introductory phrase marks the beginning of a specific prophetic sign-act where Ezekiel describes the literal tactical movements of the King of Babylon, proving that God controls secular history.

Ezekiel 21:19

Verse: Also thou son of man appoint thee two ways that the sword of the king of Babylon may come both twain shall come forth out of one land and choose thou a place choose it at the head of the way to the city

  • English Explanation: Ezekiel is instructed to draw a map or visual signpost representing a crossroads starting from Babylon (“one land”). One road leads to one destination, and the other leads elsewhere. He must mark the prominent fork in the road where the invading king must make a strategic decision.

Ezekiel 21:20

Verse: Appoint a way that the sword may come to Rabbath of the Ammonites and to Judah in Jerusalem the defenced

  • English Explanation: The two choices at the crossroads are specified: one road leads to Rabbath (the capital of the Ammonites, modern-day Amman, Jordan), and the other leads to the heavily fortified city of Jerusalem in Judah. Both nations had rebelled against Babylon, and Nebuchadnezzar had to decide which rebel to crush first.

Ezekiel 21:21

Verse: For the king of Babylon stood at the parting of the way at the head of the two ways to use divination he made his arrows bright he consulted with images he looked in the liver

  • English Explanation: This verse outlines ancient pagan divination methods used by Nebuchadnezzar to decide his military route. He shakes marked arrows (belomancy), consults household idols/teraphim, and examines the color and shapes of an animal’s liver (hepatoscopy). Though he uses pagan superstitions, the ultimate outcome is directed by the sovereign will of God.

Ezekiel 21:22

Verse: At his right hand was the divination for Jerusalem to appoint captains to open the mouth in the slaughter to lift up the voice with shouting to appoint battering rams against the gates to cast a mount and to build a fort

  • English Explanation: The pagan omens fall “at his right hand,” pointing decisively toward Jerusalem. God ensures that the lot falls on Jerusalem to fulfill His word. The verse vividly details the siege operations that will follow: setting up commanders, shouting battle cries, using heavy battering rams to breach the city gates, and building siege ramps and forts to completely trap and destroy the city.
