Verse-by-Verse Commentary & Breakdown
Ezekiel 26:17
Verse: And they shall take up a lamentation for thee and say to thee How art thou destroyed that wast inhabited of seafaring men the renowned city which wast strong in the sea she and her inhabitants which cause their terror to be on all that haunt it!
English Explanation
This verse marks the beginning of a funeral dirge (lamentation) over the fallen city of Tyre. Neighboring nations and trading partners express utter shock at how a city so heavily fortified, built securely in the midst of the sea, and globally renowned for its maritime dominance, could be completely wiped out. Tyre’s military and commercial power once terrified anyone who navigated the Mediterranean; its sudden ruin leaves the world astonished.
Ezekiel 26:18
Verse: Now shall the isles tremble in the day of thy fall yea the isles that are in the sea shall be troubled at thy departure.
English Explanation
The “isles” or coastlands refer to the distant trading colonies and maritime partners of Tyre. The verse highlights the economic and psychological ripple effect of Tyre’s destruction. When this major global hub falls, the surrounding islands shake with fear, realizing that if a city as mighty as Tyre could be destroyed, they too are completely vulnerable.
Ezekiel 26:19
Verse: For thus saith the Lord GOD When I shall make thee a desolate city like the cities that are not inhabited when I shall bring up the deep upon thee and great waters shall cover thee
English Explanation
God declares the ultimate method of Tyre’s metaphorical and physical subjection. The metaphor of “great waters” and “the deep” represents both the invading armies (like Babylon and later Alexander the Great) that overflowed the city, and the literal sinking of its maritime glory into isolation. It will become like a ghost town, swallowed up and forgotten.
Ezekiel 26:20
Verse: When I shall bring thee down with them that descend into the pit with the people of old time and shall set thee in the low parts of the earth in places desolate of old with them that go down to the pit that thou be not inhabited and I shall set glory in the land of the living
English Explanation
This verse uses poetic imagery of Sheol (the pit or the underworld) to describe the permanent political death of Tyre. The city will be relegated to the past, joining ancient empires that have vanished from the face of the earth. While Tyre sinks into oblivion, God promises to restore life and glory to “the land of the living”—specifically referencing Israel and God’s faithful people.
Ezekiel 26:21
Verse: I will make thee a terror and thou shalt be no more though thou be sought for yet shalt thou never be found again saith the Lord GOD.
English Explanation
The judgment concludes with an absolute decree of finality. Tyre’s destruction will serve as a terrifying warning to the world. Despite its historical attempts to rebuild, the island city’s ancient status, absolute sovereignty, and original splendor will be lost forever.
Chapter 27
Ezekiel 27:1
Verse: The word of the LORD came again unto me saying
English Explanation
This verse serves as the prophetic introduction to Chapter 27. Ezekiel receives a fresh, distinct revelation from God, signaling a transition from the declaration of judgment in Chapter 26 to a detailed poetic dirge over Tyre’s commercial empire.
Ezekiel 27:2
Verse: Now thou son of man take up a lamentation for Tyrus
English Explanation
God addresses Ezekiel by his prophetic title, “son of man,” and commands him to compose and sing a funeral song for Tyre. This lament is ironic, as it is sung while Tyre is still wealthy and confident, serving as a certain prediction of its inevitable demise.
Ezekiel 27:3
Verse: And say unto Tyrus O thou that art situate at the entry of the sea which art a merchant of the people for many isles Thus saith the Lord GOD O Tyrus thou hast said I am of perfect beauty.
English Explanation
Tyre is addressed directly, noting its geographic advantage at the edge of the Mediterranean, acting as the primary marketplace for the ancient world. The root of Tyre’s sin is exposed here: pride. The city looked at its wealth, architecture, and power and proudly boasted, “I am of perfect beauty.”

Urdu Explanation (اردو تشریح)
