Ezekiel Chapter 31 (Verses 15–18)
Ezekiel 31:15
Verse: Thus saith the Lord GOD In the day when he went down to the grave I caused a mourning I covered the deep for him and I restrained the floods thereof and the great waters were stayed and I caused Lebanon to mourn for him and all the trees of the field fainted for him
English Explanation: This verse describes the cosmic and geopolitical shockwaves caused by the downfall of Assyria (used here as a warning metaphor for Pharaoh and Egypt). When this mighty empire fell into the grave (Sheol or the underworld), God caused a universal state of mourning. The deep waters and floods that once nourished this great tree were restrained and dried up, symbolizing the complete cutoff of its resources and life support. The surrounding nations, symbolized by Lebanon and the trees of the field, fainted and despaired, realizing that if such a colossal power could fall, they were completely vulnerable too.
Ezekiel 31:16
Verse: I made the nations to shake at the sound of his fall when I cast him down to hell with them that descend into the pit and all the trees of Eden the choice and best of Lebanon all that drink water shall be comforted in the nether parts of the earth
English Explanation: God declares that the impact of this empire’s collapse shook the entire world, much like the thud of a massive tree falling. The ruler is cast down to “hell” (the pit/the realm of the dead). In a powerful piece of poetic irony, the other fallen kings and nations already in the nether parts of the earth—the “trees of Eden” and the “best of Lebanon” who had previously fallen—feel a sense of grim comfort or vindication seeing that this supreme tyrant has finally shared their lowly, humbled fate.
Ezekiel 31:17
Verse: They also went down into hell with him unto them that be slain with the sword and they that were his arm that dwelt under his shadow in the midst of the heathen
English Explanation: The destruction was not limited to the ruler alone. His allies, military forces, and subordinate nations—referred to here as “his arm” and those who “dwelt under his shadow”—accompanied him into the realm of the dead. All those who relied on his protection and participated in his pagan alliances were dragged down into defeat and death alongside him, slain by the sword of divine judgment.
Ezekiel 31:18
Verse: To whom art thou thus like in glory and in greatness among the trees of Eden yet shalt thou be brought down with the trees of Eden unto the nether parts of the earth thou shalt lie in the midst of the uncircumcised with them that be slain by the sword This is Pharaoh and all his multitude saith the Lord GOD
English Explanation: God directly addresses Pharaoh, asking him which of the grand, ancient empires (“the trees of Eden”) he thinks he surpasses in glory. The sobering answer is that despite his perceived matchless greatness, Pharaoh will meet the exact same fate. He will be brought down to the depths of the earth, dying an ignominious death among the “uncircumcised”—a term of supreme disgrace in the ancient Near East, signifying being excluded from God’s covenant and dying unburied or disgraced. God explicitly seals this prophecy: “This is Pharaoh and all his multitude.”
Ezekiel Chapter 32 (Verses 1–20)
Ezekiel 32:1
Verse: And it came to pass in the twelfth year in the twelfth month in the first day of the month that the word of the LORD came unto me saying
English Explanation: This verse provides the specific historical marker for the prophecy. It was received approximately 19 months after the fall of Jerusalem, in the twelfth year of King Jehoiachin’s captivity. God continues to provide direct revelations to Ezekiel, ensuring that the prophet documents the exact timing of these judgments against foreign nations.
Ezekiel 32:2
Verse: Son of man take up a lamentation for Pharaoh king of Egypt and say unto him Thou art like a young lion of the nations and thou art as a whale in the seas and thou camest forth with thy rivers and troubledst the waters with thy feet and fouledst their rivers
English Explanation: Ezekiel is commanded to sing a funeral dirge (lamentation) for Pharaoh. Pharaoh viewed himself as a majestic, terrifying “young lion” dominating the land. However, God recharacterizes him as a raging “whale” or sea monster (likely a crocodile, representing the Nile monster) that muddies, thrashes, and fouls the clean rivers, disrupting the peace, stability, and eco-political balance of the surrounding nations.
Ezekiel 32:3
Verse: Thus saith the Lord GOD I will therefore spread out my net over thee with a company of many people and they shall bring thee up in my net
English Explanation: No matter how fierce or large this aquatic monster (Egypt) is, it is no match for the Almighty. God states that He will deploy a massive fishing net—using the invading Babylonian army and an alliance of nations—to trap Pharaoh, dragging him out of his safe waters and bringing him up to ultimate judgment.
Ezekiel 32:4
Verse: Then will I leave thee upon the land I will cast thee forth upon the open field and will cause all the fowls of the heaven to remain upon thee and I will fill the beasts of the whole earth with thee
English Explanation: Once dragged out of the water, the monster will be left helpless on dry land, cast out into the open fields. This signifies an utter lack of an honorable burial. Instead of a grand mummification and a royal tomb, Pharaoh’s vast army and power will become carrion, feeding the scavenger birds of the sky and the wild beasts of the earth.
Ezekiel 32:5
Verse: And I will lay thy flesh upon the mountains and fill the valleys with thy height
English Explanation: The scale of Egypt’s slaughter will be monstrous. The bodies of the dead soldiers and the remnants of Egypt’s pride will be scattered so widely that they will cover the mountains and physically fill up the deep valleys, highlighting the immense magnitude of the carnage.
Ezekiel 32:6
Verse: I will also water with thy blood the land wherein thou swimmest even to the mountains and the rivers shall be full of thee
English Explanation: Egypt was famous for being well-watered by the Nile. In a grim twist, God states that the land Pharaoh used to “swim” in (rule over with ease) will now be drenched not with water, but with the blood of its people, extending all the way to the mountains and choking the river channels.
Ezekiel 32:7
Verse: And when I shall put thee out I will cover the heaven and make the stars thereof dark I will cover the sun with a cloud and the moon shall not give her light
English Explanation: The phrase “put thee out” translates to extinguishing a lamp. Pharaoh, who considered himself a divine sun-king on earth, will be snuffed out. This cosmic imagery represents the total collapse of Egypt’s political hierarchy and national spirit—plunging the land into complete spiritual and geopolitical darkness.
Ezekiel 32:8
Verse: All the bright lights of heaven will I make dark over thee and set darkness upon thy land saith the Lord GOD
English Explanation: Reinforcing the previous verse, God confirms that every source of guidance, hope, prosperity, and light will be extinguished over Egypt. The darkness is both a physical symbol of judgment (recalling the plagues of Exodus) and a spiritual reality of a nation cut off from divine favor.
Ezekiel 32:9
Verse: I will also vex the hearts of many people when I shall bring thy destruction among the nations into the countries which thou hast not known
English Explanation: The fall of Egypt will disturb and trouble (“vex”) the hearts of distant nations. When news of Egypt’s utter devastation reaches foreign lands—even cultures and countries that Egypt had no direct relations with—they will be filled with anxiety and dread, realizing that no empire is safe from God’s decree.
Ezekiel 32:10
Verse: Yea I will make many people amazed at thee and their kings shall be horribly afraid for thee when I shall brandish my sword before them and they shall tremble at every moment every man for his own life in the day of thy fall
English Explanation: Foreign kings will stand paralyzed with horror as they watch God “brandish His sword” (executing judgment through Babylon). The shock of Egypt’s sudden collapse will cause these leaders to tremble constantly, fearing that the same sword of judgment will swing toward their own borders next.
Ezekiel 32:11
Verse: For thus saith the Lord GOD The sword of the king of Babylon shall come upon thee
English Explanation: God strips away the metaphors and names the explicit instrument of His judgment: the military forces of King Nebuchadnezzar of Babylon. It is not mere political chance, but God’s sovereign directive executing this conquest.
Ezekiel 32:12
Verse: By the swords of the mighty will I cause thy multitude to fall the terrible of the nations all of them and they shall spoil the pomp of Egypt and all the multitude thereof shall be destroyed
English Explanation: The Babylonian army, described here as the “terrible of the nations” due to their ruthless and highly efficient military tactics, will slaughter the vast populations of Egypt. They will plunder all of Egypt’s material wealth, architectural grandeur, and pride (“the pomp of Egypt”), reducing it to absolute ruin.
Ezekiel 32:13
Verse: I will destroy also all the beasts thereof from beside the great waters neither shall the foot of man trouble them any more nor the hoofs of beasts trouble them
English Explanation: The destruction will be so thorough that the livestock and wild animals living along the Nile (“the great waters”) will be wiped out or carried away. The once-bustling riversides will become so abandoned and desolate that neither human feet nor animal hoofs will be left to disturb or muddy the waters.
Ezekiel 32:14
Verse: Then will I make their waters deep and cause their rivers to run like oil saith the Lord GOD
English Explanation: With no humans or animals left to stir up the mud, the waters of Egypt will settle, becoming clear and deep. The phrase “run like oil” signifies a smooth, undisturbed, yet eerie and stagnant flow—a poetic picture of a silent, abandoned wasteland where life has ceased to function.
Ezekiel 32:15
Verse: When I shall make the land of Egypt desolate and the country shall be destitute of that whereof it was full when I shall smite all them that dwell therein then shall they know that I am the LORD
English Explanation: This verse states the ultimate purpose behind divine judgment. When Egypt is emptied of its immense wealth, agriculture, population, and power, the survivors and onlookers will finally shed their idolatrous illusions and recognize the supreme authority, power, and reality of the one true God Yahweh.
Ezekiel 32:16
Verse: This is the lamentation wherewith they shall lament her the daughters of the nations shall lament her they shall lament for her even for Egypt and for all her multitude saith the Lord GOD
English Explanation: God declares this prophecy to be an official funeral song that will routinely be sung by the professional mourning women (“the daughters of the nations”) of foreign lands. Egypt’s fall will be so monumental that it becomes a historical benchmark for tragedy, sung about for generations.
Ezekiel 32:17
Verse: It came to pass also in the twelfth year in the fifteenth day of the month that the word of the LORD came unto me saying
English Explanation: Just two weeks after the previous prophecy (verse 1), another word from the Lord comes to Ezekiel. This precise dating establishes a fresh, separate prophetic oracle that serves as a dramatic sequel, focused on Egypt’s descent into the underworld.
Ezekiel 32:18
Verse: Son of man wail for the multitude of Egypt and cast them down even her and the daughters of the famous nations unto the nether parts of the earth with them that go down into the pit
English Explanation: Ezekiel is commanded to perform a prophetic action through his words: to “wail” and symbolically “cast down” Egypt and her prominent contemporary allied nations into the underworld (“the pit”). The prophet’s words carry the binding weight of divine decree, seals the fate of Egypt’s massive population to join the empires of the past in death.
Ezekiel 32:19
Verse: Whom dost thou pass in beauty go down and be thou laid with the uncircumcised
English Explanation: God mocks Egypt’s vanity, asking if they truly believe their beauty, culture, or sophistication exempts them from death. The rhetorical question demands a negative answer. Egypt is ordered to go down and take its final resting place among the unclean, uncircumcised, and common casualties of war.
Ezekiel 32:20
Verse: They shall fall in the midst of them that are slain by the sword she is delivered to the sword draw her and all her multitudes
English Explanation: Egypt will fall violently in the midst of ordinary casualties of war. The nation has already been handed over to the divine sword of execution. The commanding phrase “draw her and all her multitudes” is an instruction to the executioners (the Babylonians) to drag Egypt away like a carcass or a captive to her final, humiliating destruction.
