Verse-by-Verse Commentary and Explanation
Ezekiel 32:21
Verse: The strong among the mighty shall speak to him out of the midst of hell with them that help him they are gone down they lie uncircumcised slain by the sword
English Explanation
This verse vividly portrays the realm of the dead (Sheol/Hell), where fallen warriors and tyrannical leaders who preceded Pharaoh mock him upon his arrival. The “strong among the mighty” refer to past military rulers. They acknowledge that despite Egypt’s grand earthly power, they have met the exact same fate—defeated, dishonored (“uncircumcised”), and slain in battle. It highlights the ultimate equalization of all worldly powers in death.
Ezekiel 32:22
Verse: Asshur is there and all her company his graves are about him all of them slain fallen by the sword
English Explanation
The prophecy specifies Assyria (“Asshur”), one of the most brutal and dominant empires of the ancient Near East. Assyria had already fallen to the Babylonians. The verse emphasizes that the entire military host (“all her company”) lies in graves surrounding their king, completely neutralized by divine judgment via the sword.
Ezekiel 32:23
Verse: Whose graves are set in the sides of the pit and her company is round about her grave all of them slain fallen by the sword which caused terror in the land of the living
English Explanation
Assyria’s graves are positioned in the deepest, darkest depths of the pit (“the sides of the pit”). This indicates a place of ultimate humiliation. The verse notes the irony: these empires once paralyzed the world with fear (“caused terror in the land of the living”), but now they lie utterly helpless and defeated.
Ezekiel 32:24
Verse: There is Elam and all her multitude round about her grave all of them slain fallen by the sword which are gone down uncircumcised into the nether parts of the earth which caused their terror in the land of the living yet have they borne their shame with them that go down to the pit
English Explanation
The focus shifts to Elam, another formidable power located east of Babylonia. Like Assyria, Elam used terror to rule over the living. However, they have descended into the “nether parts of the earth” (the underworld) bearing their shame, stripped of their glory, and relegated to the ranks of the spiritually outcast (“uncircumcised”).
Ezekiel 32:25
Verse: They have set her a bed in the midst of the slain with all her multitude her graves are round about him all of them uncircumcised slain by the sword though their terror was caused in the land of the living yet have they borne their shame with them that go down to the pit he is put in the midst of them that be slain
English Explanation
Elam is assigned a “bed” (a resting place of eternal dishonor) among the slaughtered corpses. Surrounded by her fallen soldiers, her king or personified power shares the same status as those who died outside of God’s covenant. Their earthly terror has ended, replaced by everlasting shame in the midst of the slain.
Ezekiel 32:26
Verse: There is Meshech Tubal and all her multitude her graves are round about him all of them uncircumcised slain by the sword though they caused their terror in the land of the living
English Explanation
Meshech and Tubal (peoples from Asia Minor/Anatolia) are introduced. These nations were notorious for their fierce warfare and remote, nomadic origins. Despite their fierce reputation and the terror they inflicted upon civilization, they too are accumulated in the graveyard of forgotten nations, uncircumcised and ruined by war.
Ezekiel 32:27
Verse: And they shall not lie with the mighty that are fallen of the uncircumcised which are gone down to hell with their weapons of war and they have laid their swords under their heads but their iniquities shall be upon their bones though they were the terror of the mighty in the land of the living
English Explanation
In ancient times, highly honored warriors were buried with their weapons of war, placing their swords under their heads as a symbol of eternal honor. However, Ezekiel points out that Meshech and Tubal do not even receive this honorable pagan burial. Instead, they are cast down in chaotic defeat, their sins (“iniquities”) clinging directly to their decaying bones as a permanent stain.
Ezekiel 32:28
Verse: Yea thou shalt be broken in the midst of the uncircumcised and shalt lie with them that are slain with the sword
English Explanation
The Prophet addresses Pharaoh directly again. Egypt will not get a unique, glorious exemption. Pharaoh will be shattered and broken, left to rot indiscriminately among the uncircumcised nations and ordinary casualties of war.
Ezekiel 32:29
Verse: There is Edom her kings and all her princes which with their might are laid by them that were slain by the sword they shall lie with the uncircumcised and with them that go down to the pit
English Explanation
Edom, Israel’s immediate and historically hostile neighbor, is listed next. Known for their pride and secure mountain fortresses, Edom’s kings and princes are brought low. Their earthly might is irrelevant; they share the pit with all the other fallen, pagan empires.
Ezekiel 32:30
Verse: There be the princes of the north all of them and all the Zidonians which are gone down with the slain with their terror they are ashamed of their might and they lie uncircumcised with them that be slain by the sword and bear their shame with them that go down to the pit
English Explanation
The “princes of the north” and the “Zidonians” (Sidon/Phoenician maritime powers) are addressed. They relied heavily on their economic, naval, and political networks. Now, looking at their utter destruction, they are profoundly ashamed of their former confidence in their own strength, joining the ranks of the condemned in the pit.
Ezekiel 32:31
Verse: Pharaoh shall see them and shall be comforted over all his multitude even Pharaoh and all his army slain by the sword saith the Lord GOD
English Explanation
In a dark, ironic twist, God states that Pharaoh will look around Sheol, see all these other once-mighty nations, and find a bleak “comfort.” His comfort comes from realizing he is not alone in his downfall; the greatest empires in human history have suffered the exact same judgment under the sovereignty of the Lord GOD.
Ezekiel 32:32
Verse: For I have caused my terror in the land of the living and he shall be laid in the midst of the uncircumcised with them that are slain with the sword even Pharaoh and all his multitude saith the Lord GOD
English Explanation
Concluding the oracle against Egypt, God declares that while these earthly tyrants spread their own temporary terror, it is ultimately God who ordains true sovereign terror and judgment over the living. Pharaoh and his vast armies will occupy their final place of disgrace among the fallen, confirming the absolute authority of the Creator.
Ezekiel 33:1
Verse: Again the word of the LORD came unto me saying
English Explanation
This verse marks a structural transition in the Book of Ezekiel. The focus shifts away from judgments on foreign nations back to the immediate spiritual responsibilities and renewal of the house of Israel.
Ezekiel 33:2
Verse: Son of man speak to the children of thy people and say unto them When I bring the sword upon a land if the people of the land take a man of their coasts and set him for their watchman
English Explanation
God uses an analogy that the ancient Israelites understood well: the role of a military watchman. When a nation faces an invading army (“when I bring the sword”), they appoint a reliable sentinel from their borders to stand on the city walls and monitor approaching danger.
Ezekiel 33:3
Verse: If when he seeth the sword come upon the land he blow the trumpet and warn the people
English Explanation
The watchman’s primary duties are vigilance and communication. If he spots an advancing army, he must blow the shofar (trumpet) immediately to sound the alarm, giving the citizens a fair chance to prepare or flee.
Ezekiel 33:4
Verse: Then whosoever heareth the sound of the trumpet and taketh not warning if the sword come and take him away his blood shall be upon his own head
Explanation
If the watchman does his duty and blows the trumpet, the responsibility shifts entirely to the individual citizen. If someone hears the alarm but chooses to ignore it out of carelessness or disbelief, their subsequent death is entirely their own fault (“his blood shall be upon his own head”).
Ezekiel 33:5
Verse: He heard the sound of the trumpet and took not warning his blood shall be upon him But he that taketh warning shall deliver his soul
English Explanation
This verse reinforces personal accountability. The one who perishes had the opportunity to save themselves but failed to act. Conversely, the proactive citizen who respects the warning successfully saves (“delivers”) their life.
Ezekiel 33:6
Verse: But if the watchman see the sword come and blow not the trumpet and the people be not warned if the sword come and take any person from among them he is taken away in his iniquity but his blood will I require at the watchman’s hand
English Explanation
This is the grave danger of negligence. If the watchman fails to sound the alarm out of laziness, fear, or distraction, the citizens will perish unprepared. Even though those citizens die due to their own sins (“taken away in his iniquity”), God holds the negligent watchman criminally liable for their deaths (“his blood will I require at the watchman’s hand”).
Ezekiel 33:7
Verse: So thou O son of man I have set thee a watchman unto the house of Israel therefore thou shalt hear the word at my mouth and warn them from me
English Explanation
God directly applies the secular analogy to Ezekiel’s prophetic office. Ezekiel is the spiritual watchman for Israel. His duty is not to invent messages, but to listen carefully to God’s word (“hear the word at my mouth”) and deliver divine warnings without dilution or compromise.
Ezekiel 33:8
Verse: When I say unto the wicked O wicked man thou shalt surely die if thou dost not speak to warn the wicked from his way that wicked man shall die in his iniquity but his blood will I require at thine hand
English Explanation
This outlines the severe accountability of spiritual leadership. If God declares judgment on a wicked person and the prophet fails to voice that warning out of convenience or fear, the sinner will die in judgment, but the prophet will be held guilty of spiritual manslaughter in God’s sight.
Ezekiel 33:9
Verse: Nevertheless if thou warn the wicked of his way to turn from it if he do not turn from his way he shall die in his iniquity but thou hast delivered thy soul
English Explanation
This provides the faithful minister with peace of mind. If Ezekiel clearly communicates God’s warning to the wicked person, urging them to repent, the prophet’s duty is fully fulfilled. If the wicked person stubborn refuses to change, they will face the consequences alone, while the prophet stands vindicated and clear of guilt (“thou hast delivered thy soul”).
