Chapter 43
Ezekiel 43:12
-
Verse: This is the law of the house Upon the top of the mountain the whole limit thereof round about shall be most holy Behold this is the law of the house
-
English Explanation: This verse establishes the foundational rule for the new temple: absolute holiness. Unlike the old temple, which was surrounded by common buildings, this entire mountain complex is declared “most holy.” The repetition of “this is the law of the house” emphasizes that sanctity is the non-negotiable standard for God’s dwelling place.
-
Ezekiel 43:13
-
Verse: And these are the measures of the altar after the cubits The cubit is a cubit and an hand breadth even the bottom shall be a cubit and the breadth a cubit and the border thereof by the edge thereof round about shall be a span and this shall be the higher place of the altar
-
English Explanation: This verse introduces the dimensions of the altar of burnt offering. It specifies the use of the “long cubit” (a standard cubit plus a handbreadth, roughly 20.6 inches or 52.3 cm). It describes the base of the altar, which forms a solid foundation with a protective rim or border around it.
-
Ezekiel 43:14
-
Verse: And from the bottom upon the ground even to the lower settle shall be two cubits and the breadth one cubit and from the lesser settle even to the greater settle shall be four cubits and the breadth one cubit
-
English Explanation: The altar is built in a tiered, step-like structure (resembling a ziggurat). It rises from the base to a lower ledge (settle) that is two cubits high, and then rises another four cubits to a larger ledge. Each tier narrows by one cubit, creating ledges where the priests could walk while performing sacrifices.
-
Ezekiel 43:15
-
Verse: So the altar shall be four cubits and from the altar and upward shall be four horns
-
English Explanation: The uppermost tier, the actual hearth where the sacrificial fire burns, is four cubits high. Projecting from its four corners are four horns, which symbolize power, salvation, and sanctuary in biblical imagery. Blood was regularly applied to these horns.
-
Ezekiel 43:16
-
Verse: And the altar shall be twelve cubits long twelve broad square in the four squares thereof
-
English Explanation: The top hearth of the altar is a perfect square, measuring twelve cubits by twelve cubits. The perfect square symmetry signifies divine perfection, balance, and stability in God’s setup for worship.
-
Ezekiel 43:17
-
Verse: And the settle shall be fourteen cubits long and fourteen broad in the four squares thereof and the border about it shall be half a cubit and the bottom thereof shall be a cubit about and his stairs shall look toward the east
-
English Explanation: The middle ledge is larger, measuring fourteen cubits square. It includes a half-cubit rim for safety. Crucially, stairs are mentioned to reach the top, and they face the east. This is a shift from Exodus 20:26, which forbade steps to prevent exposure, meaning the priests here wore proper linen trousers.
-
Ezekiel 43:18
-
Verse: And he said unto me Son of man thus saith the Lord GOD These are the ordinances of the altar in the day when they shall make it to offer burnt offerings thereon and to sprinkle blood thereon
-
English Explanation: The divine messenger instructs Ezekiel regarding the consecration rituals. Before the altar can be used for regular worship, it must be cleansed and consecrated through specific blood rituals to remove any ritual defilement.
-
Ezekiel 43:19
-
Verse: And thou shalt give to the priests the Levites that be of the seed of Zadok which approach unto me to minister unto me saith the Lord GOD a young bullock for a sin offering
-
English Explanation: God specifies that only the Levitical priests from the line of Zadok are permitted to perform these intimate altar ministries. The descendants of Zadok remained faithful when the rest of Israel went astray. The cleansing begins with a young bullock as a sin offering.
-
Ezekiel 43:20
-
Verse: And thou shalt take of the blood thereof and put it on the four horns of it and on the four corners of the settle and upon the border round about thus shalt thou cleanse and purge it
-
English Explanation: The blood of the bullock is strategically applied to the key areas of the altar: the four horns, the corners of the ledge, and the outer rim. This ritual action purges the physical structure from any earthly uncleanness, dedicating it entirely to Holy God.
-
Ezekiel 43:21
-
Verse: Thou shalt take the bullock also of the sin offering and he shall burn it in the appointed place of the house without the sanctuary
-
English Explanation: The carcass of the sin-offering bullock is not to be burned inside the immediate temple courts. It must be consumed by fire in a designated area outside the inner sanctuary, reflecting the principle that sin must be removed far away from God’s immediate presence.
-
Ezekiel 43:22
-
Verse: And on the second day thou shalt offer a kid of the goats without blemish for a sin offering and they shall cleanse the altar as they did cleanse it with the bullock
-
Explanation: On the second day of the consecration week, a flawless male goat is offered. The process of purging the altar repeats, ensuring that the cleansing is meticulous, thorough, and perfectly executed.
-
Ezekiel 43:23
-
Verse: When thou hast made an end of cleansing it thou shalt offer a young bullock without blemish and a ram out of the flock without blemish
-
English Explanation: Once the initial sin offering acts are complete on those days, the focus shifts to unblemished dedication offerings—a young bullock and a ram. These symbolize total consecration and communion with God.
-
Ezekiel 43:24
-
Verse: And thou shalt offer them before the LORD and the priests shall cast salt upon them and they shall offer them up for a burnt offering unto the LORD
-
English Explanation: The priests must throw salt onto these sacrifices. Salt represents permanence, incorruptibility, and the enduring nature of God’s covenant (the “covenant of salt” mentioned in Numbers 18:19).
-
Ezekiel 43:25
-
Verse: Seven days shalt thou prepare every day a goat for a sin offering they shall also prepare a young bullock and a ram out of the flock without blemish
-
English Explanation: The ritual of offering a sin-offering goat, along with a bullock and a ram, must be sustained daily for seven full days. Seven is the biblical number of completion and perfection, indicating a total and final consecration of the altar.
-
Ezekiel 43:26
-
Verse: Seven days shall they purge the altar and purify it and they shall consecrate themselves
-
English Explanation: Over these seven days, the continuous purification cleanses the altar and installs it into service. Concurrently, the priests consecrate themselves, aligning their hearts and lives with the heavy responsibility of serving a holy God.
-
Ezekiel 43:27
-
Verse: And when these days are expired it shall be that upon the eighth day and so forward the priests shall make your burnt offerings upon the altar and your peace offerings and I will accept you saith the Lord GOD
-
English Explanation: On the eighth day—representing a new beginning—the altar becomes fully operational for the people. From this point forward, ordinary offerings (burnt and peace offerings) can be accepted, and God promises to accept His people.
-
Chapter 44
Ezekiel 44:1
-
Verse: Then he brought me back the way of the gate of the outward sanctuary which looketh toward the east and it was shut
-
English Explanation: Ezekiel is brought back to the outer eastern gate of the temple complex. He notices a striking difference: the gate, through which he previously saw the majestic glory of God enter (Ezekiel 43:1-4), is now completely closed.
-
Ezekiel 44:2
-
Verse: Then said the LORD unto me This gate shall be shut it shall not be opened and no man shall enter in by it because the LORD the God of Israel hath entered in by it therefore it shall be shut
-
English Explanation: God explains that the East Gate must remain permanently closed to regular foot traffic because the King of Glory used it. It stands as a monument to God’s permanent presence; because He entered it, it is holy ground and cannot be treated as a common thoroughfare.
-
Ezekiel 44:3
-
Verse: It is for the prince the prince he shall sit in it to eat bread before the LORD he shall enter by the way of the porch of that gate and shall go out by the way of the same
-
English Explanation: The only person granted a special privilege regarding this gate is “the prince” (a civil leader, not the High Priest or the Messiah Himself, as he offers sin offerings for himself later). He cannot walk through the gate, but he can sit in its vestibule to eat sacrificial meals in God’s presence, entering and exiting from the inner side.
-
Ezekiel 44:4
-
Verse: Then brought he me the way of the north gate before the house and I looked and behold the glory of the LORD filled the house of the LORD and I fell upon my face
-
English Explanation: Since the East Gate was shut, Ezekiel is guided through the North Gate to see the front of the temple temple. There, he is overcome by the visible, brilliant manifest presence (glory) of the Lord filling the temple, prompting him to fall on his face in worship and awe.
-
Ezekiel 44:5
-
Verse: And the LORD said unto me Son of man mark well and behold with thine eyes and hear with thine ears all that I say unto thee concerning all the ordinances of the house of the LORD and all the laws thereof and mark well the entering in of the house with every going forth of the sanctuary
-
English Explanation: God demands Ezekiel’s absolute, undivided attention. He must look closely, listen intently, and record every single rule regarding who is allowed into the temple and who must leave. Managing access to the sanctuary is critical to preserving its holiness.
-
Ezekiel 44:6
-
Verse: And thou shalt say to the rebellious even to the house of Israel Thus saith the Lord GOD O ye house of Israel let it suffice you of all your abominations
-
English Explanation: God commands Ezekiel to deliver a stern warning to Israel, calling them “rebellious.” God explicitly declares that He has had enough of their past spiritual adulteries and horrific idolatries, which defiled His previous temple.
-
Ezekiel 44:7
-
Verse: In that ye have brought into my sanctuary strangers uncircumcised in heart and uncircumcised in flesh to be in my sanctuary to pollute it even my house when ye offer my bread the fat and the blood and they have broken my covenant because of all your abominations
-
English Explanation: God specifies their crime: they allowed unauthorized foreigners—uncircumcised both physically and spiritually—into the sacred courts to handle holy things. This casual disregard for God’s boundaries polluted the divine house and completely shattered His holy covenant.
-
Ezekiel 44:8
-
Verse: And ye have not kept the charge of mine holy things but ye have set keepers of my charge in my sanctuary for yourselves
-
English Explanation: Instead of personally guarding the sacred responsibilities God entrusted to them, the people of Israel outsourced their spiritual duties. They hired unauthorized outsiders to run the operations of the sanctuary for their own convenience, showing utter contempt for God’s holy requirements.
-
