Genesis Chapter 12: The Departure from Egypt (Conclusion)

Ge 12:18-19 Verse: And Pharaoh called Abram and said What is this that thou hast done unto me why didst thou not tell me that she was thy wife Why saidst thou She is my sister so I might have taken her to me to wife now therefore behold thy wife take her and go thy way English: Pharaoh rebukes Abram for his deception. Even a pagan ruler recognized the gravity of taking another man’s wife, leading to Abram’s immediate expulsion for the safety of the Egyptian household.

Ge 12:20 Verse: And Pharaoh commanded his men concerning him and they sent him away and his wife and all that he had English: Under royal escort, Abram is sent out of Egypt. Despite his moral lapse, God ensured he left with all his possessions intact.

Genesis Chapter 13: Separation of Abram and Lot

Ge 13:1-2 Verse: And Abram went up out of Egypt he and his wife and all that he had and Lot with him into the south And Abram was very rich in cattle in silver and in gold English: Abram returns to the Negev (the south). The text emphasizes his immense wealth, signaling God’s material blessing despite the trials in Egypt.

Ge 13:3-4 Verse: And he went on his journeys from the south even to Bethel unto the place where his tent had been at the beginning between Bethel and Hai Unto the place of the altar which he had made there at the first and there Abram called on the name of the LORD English: Abram returns to his spiritual roots—the altar he first built. It signifies a “reset” and a return to public worship and reliance on God.

Ge 13:5-7 Verse: And Lot also which went with Abram had flocks and herds and tents And the land was not able to bear them that they might dwell together… And there was a strife between the herdmen of Abram’s cattle and the herdmen of Lot’s cattle… English: Success brings conflict. The combined wealth of Abram and Lot was too great for the local resources, leading to disputes between their workers.

Ge 13:8-9 Verse: And Abram said unto Lot Let there be no strife I pray thee between me and thee… separate thyself I pray thee from me if thou wilt take the left hand then I will go to the right… English: Abram acts as a peacemaker, generously giving Lot the first choice of the land to maintain family harmony.

Ge 13:10-11 Verse: And Lot lifted up his eyes and beheld all the plain of Jordan… Then Lot chose him all the plain of Jordan and Lot journeyed east and they separated themselves the one from the other English: Lot chooses based on sight and worldly prosperity, picking the fertile Jordan valley, which resembled the “garden of the LORD.”

Ge 13:12-13 Verse: Abram dwelled in the land of Canaan and Lot dwelled in the cities of the plain and pitched his tent toward Sodom But the men of Sodom were wicked and sinners before the LORD exceedingly English: A significant contrast: Abram stays in the land of promise, while Lot moves toward Sodom, a place of extreme moral corruption.

Ge 13:14-17 Verse: And the LORD said unto Abram after that Lot was separated from him Lift up now thine eyes… For all the land which thou seest to thee will I give it… Arise walk through the land… English: Once Lot leaves, God reaffirms the covenant. He promises Abram and his descendants all the land in every direction—an eternal inheritance.

Ge 13:18 Verse: Then Abram removed his tent and came and dwelt in the plain of Mamre which is in Hebron and built there an altar unto the LORD English: Abram settles in Hebron and immediately builds an altar, prioritizing his relationship with God in his new location.

Genesis Chapter 14: The War of the Kings

Ge 14:1-4 Verse: And it came to pass in the days of Amraphel… these made war with Bera king of Sodom… Twelve years they served Chedorlaomer and in the thirteenth year they rebelled English: This records the first war in Scripture. Five local kings rebel against their Eastern overlord, Chedorlaomer, after 12 years of servitude.

Ge 14:5-7 Verse: And in the fourteenth year came Chedorlaomer and the kings that were with him and smote the Rephaims… and smote all the country of the Amalekites… English: Chedorlaomer launches a crushing counter-offensive, defeating various tribes (including giants like the Rephaim) along the trade routes.

Ge 14:8-11 Verse: And there went out the king of Sodom… and they joined battle with them in the vale of Siddim… And the vale of Siddim was full of slimepits and the kings of Sodom and Gomorrah fled… And they took all the goods of Sodom and Gomorrah… English: The kings of Sodom and Gomorrah lose the battle in a valley filled with tar pits. The invaders loot the cities, taking all food and valuables.
