Genesis 20:8

Verse: Therefore Abimelech rose early in the morning and called all his servants and told all these things in their ears and the men were sore afraid

  • English Explanation: King Abimelech acted immediately after God warned him in a dream. His transparency with his servants caused a collective fear of God among his people, showing that even pagans recognized God’s power.

  • Urdu Explanation: بادشاہ ابی ملک نے خواب میں خدا کی تنبیہ کے بعد صبح سویرے اپنے ملازموں کو جمع کیا اور سب کچھ سچ سچ بتا دیا۔ یہ سن کر وہ سب بہت ڈر گئے کیونکہ وہ خدا کی قدرت کو سمجھ گئے تھے۔

Genesis 20:9

Verse: Then Abimelech called Abraham and said unto him What hast thou done unto us? and what have I offended thee that thou hast brought on me and on my kingdom a great sin? thou hast done deeds unto me that ought not to be done

  • English Explanation: Abimelech confronts Abraham for his deception. He highlights that Abraham’s lie about Sarah being only his sister put the entire kingdom at risk of divine judgment.

  • Urdu Explanation: ابی ملک نے ابراہیم کو بلا کر ملامت کی کہ تم نے ہمارے ساتھ ایسا کیوں کیا؟ تم نے مجھ پر اور میری سلطنت پر ایک بڑے گناہ کا بوجھ ڈال دیا جو تمہیں نہیں کرنا چاہیے تھا۔

Genesis 20:10

Verse: And Abimelech said unto Abraham What sawest thou that thou hast done this thing?

  • English Explanation: The King asks for the motive behind Abraham’s behavior, wondering if Abraham saw something evil in the city that justified his lack of trust.

  • Urdu Explanation: ابی ملک نے ابراہیم سے پوچھا کہ تمہارے ذہن میں کیا تھا یا تم نے یہاں کیا دیکھا تھا کہ تم نے ایسا قدم اٹھایا؟

Genesis 20:11

Verse: And Abraham said Because I thought Surely the fear of God is not in this place and they will slay me for my wife’s sake

  • English Explanation: Abraham admits his fear. He assumed the people of Gerar had no moral compass or fear of God, and would kill him to take Sarah.

  • Urdu Explanation: ابراہیم نے اعتراف کیا کہ مجھے لگا یہاں کے لوگوں میں خدا کا خوف نہیں ہے اور وہ میری بیوی کی خاطر مجھے قتل کر دیں گے۔

Genesis 20:12

Verse: And yet indeed she is my sister she is the daughter of my father but not the daughter of my mother and she became my wife

  • English Explanation: Abraham offers a technicality: Sarah was his half-sister. While factually true, it was still a deceptive “half-truth” intended to mislead.

  • Urdu Explanation: ابراہیم نے وضاحت کی کہ سارہ رشتے میں میری بہن بھی ہے (سوتیلی بہن) مگر وہ میری بیوی بھی ہے، اس لیے میں نے اسے اپنی بہن کہا۔

Genesis 20:13

Verse: And it came to pass when God caused me to wander from my father’s house that I said unto her This is thy kindness which thou shalt shew unto me at every place whither we shall come say of me He is my brother

  • English Explanation: Abraham reveals that this deception was a long-standing survival strategy they agreed upon when they first left their homeland.

  • Urdu Explanation: ابراہیم نے بتایا کہ جب ہم نے اپنا گھر چھوڑا تو ہم نے یہ طے کیا تھا کہ اپنی جان بچانے کے لیے ہر جگہ تم مجھے اپنا بھائی ہی کہنا۔

Genesis 20:14

Verse: And Abimelech took sheep and oxen and menservants and womenservants and gave them unto Abraham and restored him Sarah his wife

  • English Explanation: Despite the lie, Abimelech treats Abraham with generosity, returning Sarah and giving gifts to ensure he was on good terms with Abraham’s God.

  • Urdu Explanation: ابی ملک نے ابراہیم کو تحائف دیے جن میں بھیڑ بکریاں، بیل اور غلام شامل تھے، اور سارہ کو عزت کے ساتھ واپس کر دیا۔

Genesis 20:15

Verse: And Abimelech said Behold my land is before thee dwell where it pleaseth thee

  • English Explanation: Abimelech grants Abraham total freedom to settle anywhere in his territory, showing a complete change of heart and respect.

  • Urdu Explanation: ابی ملک نے ابراہیم کو پیشکش کی کہ میری ساری زمین تمہارے سامنے ہے، جہاں تمہارا دل چاہے وہاں رہو۔

Genesis 20:16

Verse: And unto Sarah he said Behold I have given thy brother a thousand pieces of silver behold he is to thee a covering of the eyes unto all that are with thee and with all other thus she was reproved

  • English Explanation: Abimelech gives silver to “cover the eyes,” meaning to restore Sarah’s honor publicly and prove her innocence in the eyes of all.

  • Urdu Explanation: اس نے سارہ سے کہا کہ میں نے تمہارے “بھائی” کو چاندی کے ایک ہزار سکے دیے ہیں تاکہ سب پر تمہاری پاک دامنی ثابت ہو جائے اور تمہاری عزت بحال ہو۔

Genesis 20:17

Verse: So Abraham prayed unto God and God healed Abimelech and his wife and his maidservants and they bare children

  • English Explanation: Abraham acts as an intercessor. When he prays, God removes the physical affliction (barrenness/sickness) from Abimelech’s household.

  • Urdu Explanation: ابراہیم نے خدا سے دعا کی اور خدا نے ابی ملک کے گھرانے کو شفا دی تاکہ ان کے ہاں دوبارہ اولاد پیدا ہو سکے۔

Genesis 20:18

Verse: For the LORD had fast closed up all the wombs of the house of Abimelech because of Sarah Abraham’s wife

  • English Explanation: This explains the nature of the plague; God had prevented the household from conceiving to protect Sarah’s purity.

  • Urdu Explanation: کیونکہ خدا نے سارہ کی وجہ سے ابی ملک کے گھرانے کی تمام عورتوں کے رحم بند کر دیے تھے تاکہ کوئی گناہ سرزد نہ ہو۔

Genesis 21:1

Verse: And the LORD visited Sarah as he had said and the LORD did unto Sarah as he had spoken

  • English Explanation: God proves His faithfulness. He fulfills the specific promise He made to Sarah regarding a child.

  • Urdu Explanation: خدا نے اپنے وعدے کے مطابق سارہ پر فضل کیا اور وہی کیا جس کا اس نے قول دیا تھا۔

Genesis 21:2

Verse: For Sarah conceived and bare Abraham a son in his old age at the set time of which God had spoken to him

  • English Explanation: The miracle occurs: Sarah bears a son in her old age, exactly at the time God had predicted.

  • Urdu Explanation: سارہ حاملہ ہوئی اور ابراہیم کے بڑھاپے میں اس کے لیے بیٹا پیدا ہوا، بالکل اسی مقررہ وقت پر جو خدا نے بتایا تھا۔

Genesis 21:3

Verse: And Abraham called the name of his son that was born unto him whom Sarah bare to him Isaac

  • English Explanation: Abraham obeys God’s prior command by naming the child Isaac, which means “laughter.“

  • Urdu Explanation: ابراہیم نے اپنے بیٹے کا نام اضحاق (اسحاق) رکھا، جس کا مطلب ہے “ہنسی”۔

Genesis 21:4

Verse: And Abraham circumcised his son Isaac being eight days old as God had commanded him

  • English Explanation: Abraham fulfills the covenant of circumcision on the eighth day, showing his continued obedience to God’s law.

  • Urdu Explanation: ابراہیم نے خدا کے حکم کے مطابق آٹھویں دن اپنے بیٹے اسحاق کا ختنہ کیا۔

Genesis 21:5

Verse: And Abraham was an hundred years old when his son Isaac was born unto him

  • English Explanation: The text emphasizes the impossibility of the event—Abraham was 100 years old, making Isaac a child of pure miracle.

  • Urdu Explanation: جب اسحاق پیدا ہوا تو ابراہیم کی عمر سو (100) سال تھی، جو کہ ایک معجزہ تھا۔

Genesis 21:6

Verse: And Sarah said God hath made me to laugh so that all that hear will laugh with me

  • English Explanation: Sarah’s laughter changes from skeptical (in Ch. 18) to joyful. She invites others to share in her joy.

  • Urdu Explanation: سارہ نے کہا کہ خدا نے مجھے ہنسنے کا موقع دیا ہے، اور جو بھی یہ سنے گا وہ میرے ساتھ خوشی منائے گا۔

Genesis 21:7

Verse: And she said Who would have said unto Abraham that Sarah should have given children suck? for I have born him a son in his old age

  • English Explanation: Sarah marvels at the unexpected blessing, nursing a child despite her advanced age.

  • Urdu Explanation: اس نے کہا کہ کون سوچ سکتا تھا کہ سارہ ابراہیم کے لیے بڑھاپے میں بچہ جنے گی اور اسے دودھ پلائے گی؟

Genesis 21:8

Verse: And the child grew and was weaned and Abraham made a great feast the same day that Isaac was weaned

  • English Explanation: In ancient tradition, weaning was a milestone. Abraham celebrates Isaac’s survival and growth with a banquet.

  • Urdu Explanation: بچہ بڑا ہوا اور جب اس کا دودھ چھڑایا گیا تو ابراہیم نے اس خوشی میں ایک بڑی دعوت کا اہتمام کیا۔

Genesis 21:9

Verse: And Sarah saw the son of Hagar the Egyptian which she had born unto Abraham mocking

  • English Explanation: Conflict arises when Ishmael (Hagar’s son) is seen mocking or making fun of Isaac.

  • Urdu Explanation: سارہ نے دیکھا کہ ہاجرہ کا بیٹا (اسماعیل) اسحاق کا مذاق اڑا رہا ہے، جس سے گھر میں تناؤ پیدا ہوا۔

Genesis 21:10

Verse: Wherefore she said unto Abraham Cast out this bondwoman and her son for the son of this bondwoman shall not be heir with my son even with Isaac

  • English Explanation: Sarah demands that Hagar and Ishmael be sent away to protect Isaac’s inheritance.

  • Urdu Explanation: سارہ نے ابراہیم سے کہا کہ اس لونڈی اور اس کے بیٹے کو نکال دو کیونکہ یہ میرے بیٹے اسحاق کے ساتھ وارث نہیں ہوگا۔

Genesis 21:11

Verse: And the thing was very grievous in Abraham’s sight because of his son

  • English Explanation: Abraham is deeply distressed because Ishmael is also his beloved son.

  • Urdu Explanation: ابراہیم کو یہ بات بہت بری لگی کیونکہ اسماعیل بھی ان کا اپنا بیٹا تھا۔

Genesis 21:12

Verse: And God said unto Abraham Let it not be grievous in thy sight because of the lad and because of thy bondwoman in all that Sarah hath said unto thee hearken unto her voice for in Isaac shall thy seed be called

  • English Explanation: God intervenes and tells Abraham to listen to Sarah, clarifying that the promised line will continue specifically through Isaac.

  • Urdu Explanation: خدا نے ابراہیم سے کہا کہ تم پریشان نہ ہو، سارہ جو کہتی ہے وہ مان لو، کیونکہ تمہاری نسل اسحاق سے ہی چلے گی۔

Genesis 21:13

Verse: And also of the son of the bondwoman will I make a nation because he is thy seed

  • English Explanation: God promises that Ishmael will also become a great nation because he is Abraham’s offspring.

  • Urdu Explanation: خدا نے وعدہ کیا کہ وہ لونڈی کے بیٹے (اسماعیل) سے بھی ایک بڑی قوم پیدا کرے گا کیونکہ وہ بھی ابراہیم کی اولاد ہے۔

Genesis 21:14

Verse: And Abraham rose up early in the morning and took bread and a bottle of water and gave it unto Hagar putting it on her shoulder and the child and sent her away and she departed and wandered in the wilderness of Beer-sheba

  • English Explanation: Abraham obeys God and sends them out with supplies. Hagar wanders into the harsh desert of Beer-sheba.

  • Urdu Explanation: ابراہیم نے صبح سویرے انہیں کھانا اور پانی دے کر رخصت کر دیا اور وہ بیرسبع کے بیابان میں بھٹکنے لگی۔

Genesis 21:15

Verse: And the water was spent in the bottle and she cast the child under one of the shrubs

  • English Explanation: Their resources run out, and in despair, Hagar leaves Ishmael under a bush to shield him from the sun as he nears death.

  • Urdu Explanation: جب پانی ختم ہو گیا تو ہاجرہ نے مایوسی میں بچے کو ایک جھاڑی کے نیچے ڈال دیا تاکہ اسے مرتا ہوا نہ دیکھے۔

Genesis 21:16

Verse: And she went and sat her down over against him a good way off as it were a bowshot for she said Let me not see the death of the child And she sat over against him and lift up her voice and wept

  • English Explanation: Unable to bear watching her son die, Hagar sits at a distance and cries out in grief.

  • Urdu Explanation: وہ دور جا کر بیٹھ گئی اور رونے لگی کیونکہ وہ اپنے بچے کو اپنی آنکھوں کے سامنے مرتے ہوئے نہیں دیکھ سکتی تھی۔

Genesis 21:17

Verse: And God heard the voice of the lad and the angel of God called Hagar out of heaven and said unto her What aileth thee Hagar? fear not for God hath heard the voice of the lad where he is

  • English Explanation: God hears the boy’s cries. An angel comforts Hagar, telling her not to fear because God is watching over them.

  • Urdu Explanation: خدا نے لڑکے کی آواز سنی اور آسمان سے فرشتے نے ہاجرہ کو پکارا کہ ڈرو مت، خدا نے لڑکے کی پکار سن لی ہے۔

Genesis 21:18

Verse: Arise lift up the lad and hold him in thine hand for I will make him a great nation

  • English Explanation: God commands Hagar to take care of Ishmael and reiterates the promise of his future greatness.

  • Urdu Explanation: اٹھو اور لڑکے کو سنبھالو کیونکہ میں اسے ایک بہت بڑی قوم بناؤں گا۔

Genesis 21:19

Verse: And God opened her eyes and she saw a well of water and she went and filled the bottle with water and gave the lad drink

  • English Explanation: God provides a miracle by revealing a hidden well, saving their lives.

  • Urdu Explanation: خدا نے ہاجرہ کی آنکھیں کھول دیں اور اسے پانی کا ایک کنواں نظر آیا، جس سے اس نے اپنی اور بچے کی پیاس بجھائی۔

Genesis 21:20

Verse: And God was with the lad and he grew and dwelt in the wilderness and became an archer

  • English Explanation: God remains with Ishmael as he grows up in the desert, becoming a skilled hunter.

  • Urdu Explanation: خدا اس لڑکے کے ساتھ رہا، وہ بیابان میں بڑا ہوا اور ایک ماہر تیر انداز بن گیا۔

Genesis 21:21

Verse: And he dwelt in the wilderness of Paran and his mother took him a wife out of the land of Egypt

  • English Explanation: Ishmael settles in Paran and eventually marries an Egyptian woman, as arranged by his mother.

  • Urdu Explanation: وہ فاران کے بیابان میں رہنے لگا اور اس کی ماں نے ملکِ مصر سے اس کے لیے ایک بیوی تلاش کی۔
