Hosea 4:13
Verse:
“They sacrifice upon the tops of the mountains and burn incense upon the hills under oaks and poplars and elms because the shadow thereof is good therefore your daughters shall commit whoredom and your spouses shall commit adultery.”
English Explanation
The prophet Hosea condemns Israel’s rampant idolatry. Instead of worshiping at the designated tabernacle or temple, the people chose high places—mountains and hills—under the shade of large trees to worship pagan deities like Baal and Asherah. This spiritual unfaithfulness (idolatry) manifested physically in society. Because the elders and fathers abandoned God for fertility cults, moral boundaries collapsed, leading their own daughters and spouses into literal adultery and temple prostitution.

Hosea 4:14
Verse:
“I will not punish your daughters when they commit whoredom nor your spouses when they commit adultery for themselves are separated with whores and they sacrifice with harlots therefore the people that doth not understand shall fall.”
English Explanation
God states that He will not selectively punish the women for these sins because the men are equally—if not more—guilty. The men themselves go aside with cult prostitutes and participate in pagan sex rituals. God emphasizes that a society lacking spiritual understanding and moral accountability is doomed to collapse and fall under its own weight of corruption.

Hosea 4:15
Verse:
“Though thou Israel play the harlot yet let not Judah offend and come not ye unto Gilgal neither go ye up to Beth-aven nor swear The LORD liveth.”
English Explanation
Although the Northern Kingdom (Israel) has completely strayed into spiritual adultery, God warns the Southern Kingdom (Judah) not to follow their sinful path. He explicitly tells them to avoid Gilgal and Beth-aven (a mocking name for Bethel, meaning “House of Vanity/Idols” instead of “House of God”). God warns them not to mix His holy name with pagan rituals by swearing hypocritically, “As the Lord lives.”

Hosea 4:16
Verse:
“For Israel slideth back as a backsliding heifer now the LORD will feed them as a lamb in a large place.”
English Explanation
Israel is compared to a stubborn, unruly heifer (a young cow) that refuses to pull the yoke and slides backward. Because of this stubborn rebellion, God will change His treatment of them; instead of being protected in a secure fold, they will be left scattered and vulnerable, like a lone lamb in a vast, dangerous wilderness exposed to predators.

“Ephraim is joined to idols let him alone.”
English Explanation
“Ephraim” represents the primary tribe of the Northern Kingdom of Israel. Here, God declares that Ephraim is so deeply intertwined and committed to idols that judgment is inevitable. The command “let him alone” means God is temporarily withdrawing His corrective discipline, leaving them to suffer the painful, natural consequences of their own choices.

Hosea 4:18
Verse:
“Their drink is sour they have committed whoredom continually her rulers with shame do love Give ye.”
English Explanation
The spiritual and moral state of Israel has turned sour and ruined, like spoiled wine. They indulge in continuous unfaithfulness. Worst of all, their rulers and leaders are driven entirely by greed and corruption, shamelessly loving bribes and demanding, “Give ye” (constantly seeking personal gain at the expense of justice).

Hosea 4:19
Verse:
“The wind hath bound her up in her wings and they shall be ashamed because of their sacrifices.”
English Explanation
Judgment will come swiftly and violently. The metaphor of the wind binding Israel in its wings signifies that the whirlwind of divine judgment and foreign invasion (by Assyria) will sweep them away suddenly. When their false gods fail to save them, they will be left utterly ashamed of the sacrifices they offered to idols.

Hosea 5:1
Verse:
“Hear ye this O priests and hearken ye house of Israel and give ye ear O house of the king for judgment is toward you because ye have been a snare on Mizpah and a net spread upon Tabor.”
English Explanation
God addresses the three leadership groups of Israel: the priests, the citizens (house of Israel), and the royal court. Judgment is directed at them because instead of guiding the people righteously, the leaders acted as spiritual traps. They set up idolatrous shrines at Mizpah and Mount Tabor, catching the people in sin like birds caught in a snare or a net.

Hosea 5:2
Verse:
“And the revolters are profound to make slaughter though I have been a rebuker of them all.”
English Explanation
The rebels against God have plunged deep into corruption and sinful slaughter (both in pagan sacrifices and political assassinations). Despite God continually sending prophets to rebuke and warn them, they chose to ignore His discipline and dug themselves deeper into rebellion.

Hosea 5:3
Verse:

God reassures the prophet that nothing is hidden from His sight. He knows the secret sins, motivations, and idolatry of Ephraim and Israel. He openly charges Ephraim with committing spiritual adultery and declares the entire nation defiled by their actions.

Hosea 5:4
Verse:
“They will not frame their doings to turn unto their God for the spirit of whoredoms is in the midst of them and they have not known the LORD.”
English Explanation
The people are so deeply enslaved by their habits that they refuse to alter their behavior or repent. A powerful “spirit of whoredom”—an obsession with idolatry—dwells deep within them. As a result, they lack any true, intimate relationship with or knowledge of the Lord.

Hosea 5:5
Verse:
“And the pride of Israel doth testify to his face therefore shall Israel and Ephraim fall in their iniquity Judah also shall fall with them.”

Israel’s arrogant pride and self-reliance stand as an open witness against them, sealing their guilt. This arrogance will lead to their ultimate downfall. Furthermore, because Judah began imitating Israel’s corrupt practices, they too are warned that they will fall into ruin alongside them.

Hosea 5:6
Verse:
“They shall go with their flocks and with their herds to seek the LORD but they shall not find him he hath withdrawn himself from them.”
English Explanation
When crisis strikes, the people will bring expensive animal sacrifices (flocks and herds) to seek God’s favor. However, because their hearts are unrepentant and their worship is superficial, God will reject them. He has intentionally withdrawn His presence and protection from them.

Hosea 5:7
Verse:
“They have dealt treacherously against the LORD for they have begotten strange children now shall a month devour them with their portions.”
English Explanation
Israel has betrayed their covenant marriage with God. By raising their children in pagan ways, they have raised “strange” or alien children who do not know Yahweh. Because of this total treachery, sudden judgment (symbolized by “a month”) will swiftly devour them, along with their lands and inheritances.

Hosea 5:8
Verse:
“Blow ye the cornet in Gibeah and the trumpet in Ramah cry aloud at Beth-aven after thee O Benjamin.”
English Explanation
The prophet uses vivid military imagery, sounding the alarm bells of an invading enemy. The rams’ horns and trumpets blast in the border towns of Gibeah, Ramah, and Beth-aven. The enemy is coming fast from behind Benjamin, signalling that judgment has officially arrived at their doorstep.

Hosea 5:9
Verse:
“Ephraim shall be desolate in the day of rebuke among the tribes of Israel have I made known that which shall surely be.”
English Explanation
When God executes His divine rebuke, Ephraim will be left completely ruined and desolate. God declares that this is not an empty threat; it is a certain decree made public to all the tribes of Israel so they know His word is absolute.

Hosea 5:10
Verse:
“The princes of Judah were like them that remove the bound therefore I will pour out my wrath upon them like water.”
English Explanation
In ancient times, moving a property boundary marker was a heinous crime equivalent to stealing land. The leaders of Judah committed spiritual boundary-crossing by mixing true worship with paganism and exploiting the vulnerable. Therefore, God promises to pour out His burning wrath upon them like an overwhelming, destructive flood.

Hosea 5:11
Verse:
“Ephraim is oppressed and broken in judgment because he willingly walked after the commandment.”
English Explanation
Ephraim finds itself crushed and broken under foreign oppression and judgment. This happened because they chose to “willingly walk” after human decrees and the idolatrous commandments of wicked kings (like Jeroboam’s golden calves) rather than obedience to God’s holy law.

Hosea 5:12
Verse:

He will be like a moth eating away at Ephraim’s garments, and like rot or decay eating into the bones of Judah, causing internal weakness and slow ruin from within due to their sins.

Hosea 5:13
Verse:
“When Ephraim saw his sickness and Judah saw his wound then went Ephraim to the Assyrian and sent to king Jareb yet could he not heal you nor cure you of your wound.”
English Explanation
When Israel and Judah realized their national decline (“sickness” and “wound”), they made a fatal mistake. Instead of turning to God for healing, Israel looked to political alliances, sending tributes to the mighty King of Assyria (King Jareb). God notes that human politics and foreign empires cannot heal a spiritual wound inflicted by the Almighty.

Hosea 5:14
Verse:
“For I will be unto Ephraim as a lion and as a young lion to the house of Judah I even I will tear and go away I will take away and none shall rescue him.”
English Explanation
Since the silent decay did not bring repentance, God shifts His approach from a quiet moth to a fierce, aggressive lion. He will fiercely tear into both Ephraim and Judah in judgment. When God decides to carry away His blessings and hand them over to captivity, no earthly alliance will be strong enough to rescue them.

Hosea 5:15

“I will go and return to my place till they acknowledge their offence and seek my face in their affliction they will seek me early.”
English Explanation
God states that He will withdraw His manifest presence and return to His heavenly dwelling. He will leave them to their fate until they genuinely confess their guilt and seek His face. God knows that it is often through intense misery and affliction that people finally humble themselves and seek Him earnestly.

Chapter 6
Hosea 6:1
Verse:
“Come and let us return unto the LORD for he hath torn and he will heal us he hath smitten and he will bind us up.”
English Explanation
This verse marks a dramatic shift in tone, representing the hopeful response of the people (or the prophet’s plea to the nation). It is an invitation to repent and return to Yahweh. The text acknowledges that while God was the one who justly tore them apart like a lion, He is also the only One loving and powerful enough to bind up their wounds and heal them.

Hosea 6:2
Verse:
“After two days will he revive us in the third day he will raise us up and we shall live in his sight.”
English Explanation
This verse speaks of swift and complete restoration after repentance. “After two days… on the third day” is a prophetic idiom meaning that their restoration will happen quickly and surely. Prophetically and typologically, Christian scholars also view this verse as a beautiful, early foreshadowing of the resurrection of Jesus Christ on the third day, bringing eternal life to believers.

Hosea 6:3
Verse:
“Then shall we know if we follow on to know the LORD his going forth is prepared as the morning and he shall come unto us as the rain as the latter and former rain unto the earth.”

If the people persist in earnestly pursuing and knowing God, they are promised absolute faithfulness from Him. God’s ultimate arrival and restoration are as certain as the morning sunrise. His presence will refresh their exhausted souls like the seasonal autumn (former) and spring (latter) rains that revive and bring life back to dry earth.
