Verse-by-Verse Commentary (Hosea 6:4 – Hosea 8:4)

Hosea 6:4

  • Verse: O Ephraim what shall I do unto thee O Judah what shall I do unto thee for your goodness is as a morning cloud and as the early dew it goeth away

  • English Explanation: God expresses His deep frustration and sorrow over the spiritual instability of both the northern kingdom (Ephraim) and the southern kingdom (Judah). Their repentance and loyalty are superficial and short-lived. Just like a morning mist or early morning dew that quickly evaporates when the sun rises, their devotion vanishes at the first sign of temptation or comfort. It highlights the tragedy of temporary faith.

  • Urdu Explanation (اردو تشریح): خداوند افرائیم (اسرائیل) اور یہوداہ کی روحانی کمزوری اور بے وفائی پر گہرے دکھ کا اظہار کر رہا ہے۔ ان کی توبہ اور نیکی سطحی اور عارضی ہے۔ جیسے صبح کا بادل یا شبنم کی بوندیں سورج نکلتے ہی غائب ہو جاتی ہیں، بالکل ویسے ہی ان کی وفاداری بھی تھوڑی ہی دیر میں ختم ہو جاتی ہے۔ یہ آیت ظاہر کرتی ہے کہ خدا کو عارضی نہیں بلکہ مستقل ایمان پسندی پسند ہے۔

Hosea 6:5

  • Verse: Therefore have I hewed them by the prophets I have slain them by the words of my mouth and thy judgments are as the light that goeth forth

  • English Explanation: Because of their fickle nature, God sent prophets to deliver sharp, cutting messages of judgment. The words of God’s mouth are so powerful that they bring spiritual execution to the wicked. His judgments are not hidden or unjust; they are as clear, visible, and inevitable as the morning light.

  • Urdu Explanation (اردو تشریح): لوگوں کی سخت دلی کی وجہ سے، خدا نے نبیوں کے ذریعے سخت پیغامات بھیجے جنہوں نے ان کے گناہوں کو بے نقاب کیا۔ خدا کے کلام کے ذریعے ان پر عدالت کی سزا سنائی گئی۔ خدا کے احکام اور سزائیں اتنی ہی واضح اور عیاں ہیں جیسے دن کی روشنی ہوتی ہے، جس میں کچھ چھپا نہیں رہتا۔

Hosea 6:6

  • Verse: For I desired mercy and not sacrifice and the knowledge of God more than burnt offerings

  • English Explanation: This is a central theme in biblical theology. God values inward transformation, genuine love, and relational loyalty (mercy/hesed) far above empty, ritualistic religious practices. Sacrifices and offerings are meaningless to God if the heart of the worshiper is filled with sin and devoid of a true, experiential knowledge of Him.

  • Urdu Explanation (اردو تشریح): یہ آیت بائبل کی اہم ترین تعلیمات میں سے ایک ہے۔ خدا ظاہری رسم و رواج اور قربانیوں کے بجائے دل کی سچائی، رحم دلی اور خدا کی حقیقی پہچان (معرفت) کو پسند کرتا ہے۔ اگر انسان کا دل گناہ سے آلودہ ہو، تو اس کی دی ہوئی قربانیاں اور عبادات خدا کے نزدیک بے کار ہیں۔

Hosea 6:7

  • Verse: But they like men have transgressed the covenant there have they dealt treacherously against me

  • English Explanation: The Hebrew phrase “like men” can also be translated as “like Adam.” Just as Adam broke his covenant with God in the Garden of Eden despite being blessed, the people of Israel broke their sacred covenant at Sinai. They acted faithlessly, treating their relationship with the Almighty with treason and betrayal.

  • Urdu Explanation (اردو تشریح): جیسے آدم نے باغِ عدن میں خدا کے حکم کو توڑا اور عہد شکنی کی، ویسے ہی اسرائیل کے لوگوں نے بھی خدا کے پاک عہد کو توڑا۔ انہوں نے اپنے محسن خدا کے ساتھ غداری کی اور وفاداری کا دامن چھوڑ دیا۔

Hosea 6:8

  • Verse: Gilead is a city of them that work iniquity and is polluted with blood

  • English Explanation: Gilead, a prominent region east of the Jordan, should have been a place of refuge and holiness. Instead, it became notorious for lawlessness, idolatry, and violent crimes. The metaphor “polluted with blood” signifies that murder and injustice left a visible, staining mark on the entire city.

  • Urdu Explanation (اردو تشریح): جلعاد کا علاقہ جسے امن اور پناہ کی جگہ ہونا چاہیے تھا، وہ بدکاری اور گناہ کا گڑھ بن چکا تھا۔ وہاں ہر طرف ظلم اور خون ریزی تھی، جس کی وجہ سے وہ پورا شہر گناہوں کے خون سے آلودہ ہو گیا تھا۔

Hosea 6:9

  • Verse: And as troops of robbers wait for a man so the company of priests murder in the way by consent for they commit lewdness

  • English Explanation: In a shocking turn, the spiritual leaders—the priests—who were supposed to guide the people toward God, became like bands of highway robbers. They conspired together to exploit, abuse, and metaphorically (and literally) murder those traveling to places of worship. Their systemic religious corruption led to absolute moral degradation.

  • Urdu Explanation (اردو تشریح): سب سے زیادہ افسوسناک بات یہ تھی کہ کاہن (مذہبی رہنما)، جن کا کام لوگوں کو خدا کی طرف لانا تھا، خود ڈاکوؤں کے گروہ کی طرح بن گئے۔ وہ مل کر سازشیں کرتے اور لوگوں کو لوٹتے اور قتل کرتے تھے۔ ان کی یہ بدکاری اور مڈبھیڑ ان کے اخلاقی زوال کا منہ بولتا ثبوت تھی۔

Hosea 6:10

  • Verse: I have seen an horrible thing in the house of Israel there is the whoredom of Ephraim Israel is defiled

  • English Explanation: God looks upon the Northern Kingdom and sees an utterly shocking spectacle. The spiritual adultery—the worship of pagan gods like Baal—had contaminated the entire nation. Israel, once set apart as holy to the Lord, had become spiritually defiled and unclean.

  • Urdu Explanation (اردو تشریح): خدا فرماتا ہے کہ اس نے اسرائیل کے گھرانے میں ایک ہولناک چیز دیکھی ہے۔ افرائیم (اسرائیل) نے بت پرستی کر کے روحانی زناکاری کی، جس کی وجہ سے پوری قوم ناپاک اور غلیظ ہو چکی ہے۔

Hosea 6:11

  • Verse: Also O Judah he hath set an harvest for thee when I returned the captivity of my people

  • English Explanation: Judah is warned that they are not exempt from judgment. A “harvest” of retribution is appointed for them because they copied Israel’s sins. However, the verse also carries a dual note of prophetic hope—God intends to restore His people from captivity after the judgment is executed.

  • Urdu Explanation (اردو تشریح): یہوداہ کو بھی خبردار کیا گیا ہے کہ ان کے گناہوں کی فصل بھی پک چکی ہے اور ان کی سزا کا وقت بھی مقرر ہے۔ لیکن اس سزا کے پیچھے خدا کا یہ مقصد بھی ہے کہ وہ عذاب کے بعد اپنے لوگوں کو اسارت (قید) سے واپس لائے اور ان کی بحالی کرے۔

Chapter 7

Hosea 7:1

  • Verse: When I would have healed Israel then the iniquity of Ephraim was discovered and the wickedness of Samaria for they commit falsehood and the thief cometh in and the troop of robbers spoileth without

  • English Explanation: Every time God stepped in with mercy to heal and restore Israel, their deep-seated corruption was exposed even further. The leadership in Samaria (the capital) practiced systemic deceit. Society had collapsed into lawlessness, where internal thieves plundered inside homes and violent gangs openly raided from the outside.

  • Urdu Explanation (اردو تشریح): جب بھی خدا نے اسرائیل کو شفا دینے اور ان کی حالت بدلنے کا ارادہ کیا، تو ان کی بدکاری اور سامریہ (دارالحکومت) کے گناہ اور زیادہ کھل کر سامنے آ گئے۔ وہ جھوٹ اور فریب کے عادی ہو چکے تھے؛ گھروں کے اندر چوریاں ہو رہی تھیں اور باہر ڈاکوؤں کے گروہ سرِعام لوٹ مار کر رہے تھے۔

Hosea 7:2

  • Verse: And they consider not in their hearts that I remember all their wickedness now their own doings have beset them about they are before my face

  • English Explanation: The people lived with a false sense of security, foolishly believing that God does not keep track of their sins. They forgot that God is omniscient. Now, their cumulative sins have trapped and surrounded them like an enemy army, completely exposed before the eyes of God.

  • Urdu Explanation (اردو تشریح): وہ اپنے دلوں میں یہ نہیں سوچتے کہ خدا ان کی تمام بدکاریوں کو یاد رکھتا ہے۔ وہ اس وہم میں تھے کہ خدا ان کے گناہوں سے بے خبر ہے۔ اب ان کے اپنے برے اعمال نے انہیں چاروں طرف سے گھیر لیا ہے اور وہ خدا کی نظروں کے سامنے بالکل عیاں ہیں۔

Hosea 7:3

  • Verse: They make the king glad with their wickedness and the princes with their lies

  • English Explanation: The political culture of Israel was completely rotten. Instead of standing for truth, the politicians, elites, and citizens flattered and pleased their corrupt kings and princes with wicked schemes and political lies. Rebellion against God was celebrated at the highest levels of government.

  • Urdu Explanation (اردو تشریح): اسرائیل کا سیاسی ڈھانچہ مکمل طور پر تباہ ہو چکا تھا۔ لوگ اور درباری اپنی بدکاری اور جھوٹ کے ذریعے بادشاہ اور شہزادوں کو خوش کرتے تھے۔ حکومت کے اعلیٰ عہدیداروں میں گناہ اور مکاری کو پسند کیا جاتا تھا۔

Hosea 7:4

  • Verse: They are all adulterers as an oven heated by the baker who ceaseth from raising after he hath kneeded the dough until it be leavened

  • English Explanation: Hosea uses a vivid baking metaphor. The people’s passion for idolatry and sin is like a baker’s oven that is intensely hot. The baker stirs up the fire and lets the heat build up quietly while the dough rises. Similarly, their sinful desires burn constantly within them, just waiting for the right moment to break out into wicked actions.

  • Urdu Explanation (اردو تشریح): ہوشیع نبی یہاں نانبائی (روٹی پکانے والے) کے تندور کی مثال دیتے ہیں۔ وہ کہتے ہیں کہ ان کے دل گناہ اور بت پرستی کی آگ سے ایسے دہک رہے ہیں جیسے نانبائی کا گرم تندور۔ جیسے آٹا خمیر ہونے تک تندور کی آگ اندر ہی اندر سلگتی رہتی ہے، ویسے ہی ان کی بری خواہشات ان کے اندر بھڑک رہی ہیں۔

Hosea 7:5

  • Verse: In the day of our king the princes have made him sick with bottles of wine he stretched out his hand with scorners

  • English Explanation: During royal celebrations or holidays, the political leaders engaged in wild, drunken debauchery. They plied the king with wine until he was physically sick and mentally impaired. In his drunken state, the king joined hands with mockers and cynics, abandoning his royal dignity and moral responsibility.

  • Urdu Explanation (اردو تشریح): بادشاہ کے جشن کے دن، شہزادوں نے اسے شراب پلا پلا کر بیمار کر دیا۔ نشے کی حالت میں بادشاہ اپنی شاہی وقار بھول گیا اور خدا کا مذاق اڑانے والوں اور شریروں کے ساتھ ہاتھ ملا کر بیٹھ گیا۔

Hosea 7:6

  • Verse: For they have made ready their heart like an oven whiles they lie in wait their baker sleepeth all the night in the morning it burness as a flaming fire

  • Explanation: The wicked plots of the political elite are hidden but deadly. They plot treason and murder quietly overnight (while the baker sleeps). By morning, their hidden plots erupt into open violence, burning like a raging fire that destroys the political stability of the kingdom.

  • Urdu Explanation (اردو تشریح): ان کے دل سازشوں سے بھرے ہوئے ہیں جو تندور کی طرح سلگ رہے ہیں۔ وہ رات بھر خاموشی سے وار کرنے کا انتظار کرتے ہیں (جیسے نانبائی رات کو سو جاتا ہے) اور صبح ہوتے ہی ان کی پوشیدہ سازشیں ایک بھڑکتی ہوئی آگ کی طرح سامنے آتی ہیں اور تباہی مچاتی ہیں۔

Hosea 7:7

  • Verse: They are all hot as an oven and have devoured their judges all their kings are fallen there is none among them that calleth unto me

  • English Explanation: Israel experienced massive political anarchy, with kings being assassinated one after another by rivals. Their fiery rage and lust for power “devoured” their leaders and judges. Yet, despite this national collapse, not a single king or leader turned to the Lord for guidance or help.

  • Urdu Explanation (اردو تشریح): وہ سب اقتدار کی ہوس اور غصے میں تندور کی طرح گرم ہیں، انہوں نے اپنے ہی منصفوں اور قاضیوں کو ختم کر دیا۔ ان کے کئی بادشاہ یکے بعد دیگرے قتل ہوئے اور تخت سے گر گئے، لیکن اس سیاسی بحران کے باوجود کسی ایک نے بھی سچے دل سے خدا کو نہ پکارا اور نہ اس سے مدد مانگی۔

Hosea 7:8

  • Verse: Ephraim he hath mixed himself among the people Ephraim is a cake not turned

  • English Explanation: Ephraim compromised its holy identity by mixing with pagan nations and adopting their idolatrous cultures. Hosea calls Ephraim “a cake not turned”—meaning a flatbread cooked on hot stones that is burnt to a crisp on one side but raw and doughy on the other. They are spiritually useless and inconsistent.

  • Urdu Explanation (اردو تشریح): افرائیم (اسرائیل) نے دوسری کافر قوموں کے ساتھ میل جول بڑھا کر اپنی پاکیزگی کھو دی ہے۔ افرائیم کی مثال “ایسی روٹی کی ہے جسے پلٹا نہ گیا ہو” یعنی وہ ایک طرف سے جل چکی ہے اور دوسری طرف سے کچی ہے۔ وہ روحانی طور پر ادھورے، ناپائیدار اور بے کار ہو چکے ہیں۔

Hosea 7:9

  • Verse: Strangers have devoured his strength and he knoweth it not yea gray hairs are here and there upon him yet he knoweth not

  • English Explanation: Foreign nations (like Syria and Assyria) were draining Israel’s wealth and military power through heavy taxes and warfare, but Israel was blind to its own decline. Just like an aging person who fails to notice the gray hairs appearing on their head, Israel was dying nationally and spiritually but remained completely unaware.

  • Urdu Explanation (اردو تشریح): غیر قوموں نے اسرائیل کی طاقت اور دولت کو چوس لیا ہے، لیکن وہ اپنی اس کمزوری سے بالکل بے خبر ہیں۔ ان کی حالت اس بوڑھے آدمی جیسی ہے جس کے سر پر سفید بال آ چکے ہوں لیکن اسے احساس ہی نہ ہو کہ وہ موت اور زوال کے کتنا قریب پہنچ چکا ہے۔

Hosea 7:10

  • Verse: And the pride of Israel testifieth to his face and they do not return to the LORD their God nor seek him for all this

  • English Explanation: Israel’s arrogance and self-reliance are so glaring that their pride acts as a witness against them. Even though they are surrounded by national ruin, their stubborn hearts refuse to humble themselves, return to Yahweh, or seek His divine help.

  • Urdu Explanation (اردو تشریح): اسرائیل کا غرور اور تکبر خود ان کے خلاف گواہی دے رہا ہے۔ اتنی بڑی تباہی اور زوال کے باوجود، ان کی ضد اور انا انہیں جھکنے نہیں دیتی؛ وہ نہ تو اپنے خدا کی طرف لوٹتے ہیں اور نہ ہی اس کی مدد حاصل کرنے کی کوشش کرتے ہیں۔

Hosea 7:11

  • Verse: Ephraim also is like a silly dove without heart they call to Egypt they go to Assyria

  • English Explanation: Instead of trusting God, Israel acts like a “silly dove”—brainless, easily frightened, and lacking direction. They frantically fly back and forth, making political alliances with Egypt and then running to Assyria for protection. This unstable foreign policy only sealed their doom.

  • Urdu Explanation (اردو تشریح): افرائیم ایک نادان اور بے عقل کبوتر کی مانند بن گیا ہے جس میں سمجھ نہیں ہوتی۔ وہ کبھی مدد کے لیے مصر کی طرف بھاگتے ہیں تو کبھی اسور (Assyria) سے سیاسی اتحاد کرتے ہیں۔ وہ یہ بھول گئے کہ اصل تحفظ سیاسی چالوں میں نہیں بلکہ خدا کی پناہ میں ہے۔

Hosea 7:12

  • Verse: When they shall go I will spread my net upon them I will bring them down as the fowls of the heaven I will chastise them as their congregation hath heard

  • English Explanation: God warns that no matter where Israel flies to escape their fate, His judgment will catch up to them. He will spread His sovereign net over them and bring them crashing down like birds from the sky. They will face the exact punishments that were read aloud to them in the laws of the congregation.

  • Urdu Explanation (اردو تشریح): خدا فرماتا ہے کہ وہ جہاں کہیں بھی بھاگنے کی کوشش کریں گے، وہ ان پر اپنا جال پھیلائے گا اور انہیں آسمان کے پرندوں کی طرح نیچے گرا دے گا۔ ان کو ان کے گناہوں کی وہی سزا دی جائے گی جس کی انتباہ انہیں شریعت کی کتابوں میں پہلے ہی سنائی جا چکی تھی۔

Hosea 7:13

  • Verse: Woe unto them for they have fled from me destruction unto them because they have transgressed against me though I have redeemed them yet they have spoken lies against me

  • English Explanation: Pronouncing a divine “woe,” God declares ruin over Israel because they actively abandoned Him. God had historically redeemed them from slavery (like the Exodus), yet they repaid His love by spreading theological lies about Him and worshiping false idols.

  • Urdu Explanation (اردو تشریح): ان پر افسوس! کیونکہ وہ خدا کو چھوڑ کر بھاگ گئے ہیں۔ ان کے لیے ہلاکت ہے کیونکہ انہوں نے خدا کے خلاف گناہ کیے۔ حالانکہ خدا نے ہمیشہ انہیں مخلصی (نجات) دی، لیکن انہوں نے خدا کے بارے میں جھوٹ بولا اور بتوں کو اپنا نجات دہندہ مانا۔

Hosea 7:14

  • Verse: And they have not cried unto me with their heart when they howled upon their beds they assemble themselves for corn and wine and they rebel against me

  • English Explanation: When famine struck, the people cried out in distress on their beds, but it was not a genuine, heartfelt cry to God. They only wailed because they missed their food and wine. They gathered at pagan altars to beg for good harvests, showing that they loved God’s gifts but rebelled against the Giver.

  • Urdu Explanation (اردو تشریح): جب ان پر قحط آیا، تو وہ اپنے بستروں پر روئے اور چلائے، لیکن ان کا یہ رونا دل سے خدا کے لیے نہیں تھا۔ وہ صرف اناج اور مے (شراب) کے ختم ہونے پر رو رہے تھے۔ وہ بتوں کے آستانوں پر جمع ہوتے تھے تاکہ ان کو خوراک مل سکے، یوں وہ نعمتوں سے محبت کرتے تھے لیکن نعمت دینے والے کے باغی تھے۔

Hosea 7:15

  • Verse: Though I have bound and strengthened their arms yet do they imagine mischief against me

  • English Explanation: God trained them and gave them strength, much like a father training a young athlete or warrior. Yet, instead of using that divine energy and strength to do good, Israel used their power to plot evil and rebel against God.

  • Urdu Explanation (اردو تشریح): اگرچہ خدا نے خود ان کی تربیت کی اور ان کے بازوؤں کو مضبوط کیا تاکہ وہ طاقتور بنیں، لیکن انہوں نے اسی طاقت کو خدا ہی کے خلاف سازشیں اور برے منصوبے بنانے کے لیے استعمال کیا۔ یہ انتہائی درجہ کی احسان فراموشی تھی۔

Hosea 7:16

  • Verse: They return but not to the most High they are like a deceitful bow their princes shall fall by the sword for the rage of their tongue this shall be their derision in the land of Egypt

  • English Explanation: Israel pretends to turn around, but they do not turn back to the Most High God; they turn to other idols. They are like a warped, “deceitful bow” that misses the target completely when an arrow is shot. Their leaders will die by the enemy’s sword due to their arrogant speech, and their failed reliance on Egypt will make them a laughingstock.

  • Urdu Explanation (اردو تشریح): وہ رخ تو بدلتے ہیں لیکن خدا تعالیٰ کی طرف نہیں لوٹتے۔ ان کی مثال ایک “دھوکے باز کمان” جیسی ہے جس سے تیر چلایا جائے تو وہ نشانے پر نہیں لگتا۔ ان کے حکمران اپنی زبان کی درازی اور تکبر کی وجہ سے تلوار سے ہلاک ہوں گے، اور جن مصریوں پر وہ بھروسہ کرتے تھے، وہی ملکِ مصر ان کی اس حالت پر ان کا مذاق اڑائے گا۔

Chapter 8

Hosea 8:1

  • Verse: Set the trumpet to thy mouth He shall come as an eagle against the house of the LORD because they have transgressed my covenant and trespassed against my law

  • English Explanation: The prophet is commanded to blow the shofar (trumpet) to sound a frantic alarm of war. The enemy (Assyria) is descending rapidly and ruthlessly like a hunting eagle upon the house of the Lord (Israel). This judgment is directly triggered because Israel violated the divine covenant and broke God’s holy laws.

  • Urdu Explanation (اردو تشریح): نبی کو حکم دیا جا رہا ہے کہ وہ اپنے منہ سے نرسنگا (جنگ کا بگل) پھونک کر لوگوں کو آنے والی تباہی سے باخبر کرے۔ دشمن (اسور) ایک عقاب کی مانند تیزی اور بے رحمی سے خدا کے گھرانے (اسرائیل) پر جھپٹنے والا ہے۔ یہ عذاب اس لیے آ رہا ہے کیونکہ انہوں نے خدا کے عہد کو توڑا اور اس کی شریعت کی نافرمانی کی۔

Hosea 8:2

  • Verse: Israel shall cry unto me My God we know thee

  • English Explanation: When the terrifying invading army arrives, Israel will suddenly try to claim a relationship with God, crying out, “My God, we know You!” However, this is a hypocritical, superficial cry born of panic rather than true repentance. It is too late for empty words.

  • Urdu Explanation (اردو تشریح): جب مصیبت سر پر آ جائے گی، تو اسرائیل کے لوگ گھبرا کر خدا کے سامنے چلائیں گے کہ “اے ہمارے خدا، ہم تجھے جانتے ہیں!” لیکن ان کا یہ دعویٰ جھوٹا اور منافقانہ ہوگا، کیونکہ انہوں نے آرام کے وقت خدا کو کبھی یاد نہیں کیا تھا۔

Hosea 8:3

  • Verse: Israel hath cast off the thing that is good the enemy shall pursue him

  • English Explanation: God rejects their empty words because their actions prove otherwise. Israel has completely rejected what is morally good and divine. Since they threw away God’s goodness, God will allow the ruthless enemy to relentlessly hunt them down.

  • Urdu Explanation (اردو تشریح): خدا ان کی پکار کو رد کرتا ہے کیونکہ اسرائیل نے نیکی اور اچھائی کو یکسر مسترد کر دیا ہے۔ چونکہ انہوں نے خدا کی دی ہوئی بھلائی کو چھوڑ دیا، اس لیے اب دشمن ان کا پیچھا کرے گا اور انہیں اپنی گرفت میں لے لے گا۔

Hosea 8:4

  • Verse: They have set up kings but not by me they have made princes and I knew it not of their silver and their gold have they made them idols that they may be cut off

  • English Explanation: Israel committed two fatal sins without God’s approval: they established their own political leaders and kings through rebellion, and they melted down their silver and gold to manufacture idols. By relying on human politics and pagan gods, they sealed their own destruction and insured they would be completely cut off.

  • Urdu Explanation (اردو تشریح): اسرائیل نے خدا کی مرضی کے بغیر خود ہی اپنے بادشاہ اور شہزادے چن لیے، جس میں خدا کی کوئی منظوری شامل نہ تھی۔ مزید یہ کہ انہوں نے اپنے ہی سونے چاندی سے بت بنا کر ان کی پوجا شروع کر دی۔ ان کے اسی سیاسی اور روحانی شرک نے ان کی ہلاکت کا سامان تیار کیا تاکہ وہ دنیا سے مٹ جائیں۔
