Hosea Chapter
Hosea Chapter

Verse-by-Verse Commentary & Explanation

Hosea 11:7

Complete Verse

And my people are bent to backsliding from me though they called them to the most High none at all would exalt him

English Explanation

This verse highlights the stubborn and persistent rebellion of the people of Israel. Despite their unique relationship with God as His chosen people, their natural inclination (“bent”) is to turn away from Him. Even when prophets and spiritual leaders call them to look toward the Most High, there is a collective refusal to honor, worship, or exalt God. It portrays a tragic picture of a people willfully choosing spiritual decline over divine fellowship.

Hosea 11:8

Complete Verse

How shall I give thee up Ephraim how shall I deliver thee Israel how shall I make thee as Admah how shall I set thee as Zeboim mine heart is turned within me my repentings are kindled together

English Explanation

Here, we glimpse the profound emotional conflict within the heart of God. Ephraim and Israel represent the Northern Kingdom. Admah and Zeboim were cities destroyed alongside Sodom and Gomorrah. While justice demands total destruction, God’s covenant love (Hesed) restrains His wrath. His compassion is stirred (“my repentings are kindled”), showing that God does not take pleasure in punishing His people, but longs to show mercy.

Hosea 11:9

Complete Verse

I will not execute the fierceness of mine anger I will not return to destroy Ephraim for I am God and not man the Holy One in the midst of thee and I will not enter into the city

English Explanation

God declares that He will withhold the full execution of His wrath. The foundational reason for this mercy is His divine nature: “for I am God and not man.” Human anger is often vindictive, erratic, and uncontrolled, but God’s judgment is perfectly balanced by His holiness and covenant faithfulness. As the Holy One living among them, He chooses preservation over complete annihilation.

Hosea 11:10

Complete Verse

They shall walk after the LORD he shall roar like a lion when he shall roar then the children shall tremble from the west

English Explanation

This verse looks forward to a future restoration. A time will come when the people will reject idols and “walk after the LORD.” God will manifest His power and authority like a roaring lion. This roar is not to destroy His children, but to gather them. Hearing His majestic voice, His scattered children will return in reverent fear (“tremble”) from distant western lands.

Hosea 11:11

Complete Verse

They shall tremble as a bird out of Egypt and as a dove out of the land of Assyria and I will place them in their houses saith the LORD

English Explanation

Continuing the theme of return, God describes the exiles returning swiftly and eagerly, like frightened birds flying back to their nests from Egypt and Assyria (the superpowers of that era). God gives a definitive promise: “I will place them in their houses.” This signifies a permanent, peaceful resettlement in their promised homeland under divine protection.

Hosea 11:12

Complete Verse

Ephraim compasseth me about with lies and the house of Israel with deceit but Judah yet ruleth with God and is faithful with the saints

English Explanation

This verse serves as a transition, contrasting the spiritual states of the Northern Kingdom (Ephraim/Israel) and the Southern Kingdom (Judah). Ephraim surrounds God with hypocritical worship, lies, and political deceit. In contrast, at this point in history, Judah still maintains a level of allegiance to God’s lawful line of kings and remains relatively faithful to the covenant and the holy traditions.

Hosea 12:1

Complete Verse

Ephraim feedeth on wind and followeth after the east wind he daily increaseth lies and desolation and they do make a covenant with the Assyrians and oil is carried into Egypt

English Explanation

Feeding on the wind or chasing the “east wind” (a destructive, scorching desert wind) is a metaphor for pursuing useless, harmful political alliances. Instead of trusting God, Israel relies on political schemes—making treaties with Assyria and sending expensive olive oil as tribute to Egypt. These deceitful foreign policies bring nothing but emptiness and ultimate desolation.

Hosea 12:2

Complete Verse

The LORD hath also a controversy with Judah and will punish Jacob according to his ways according to his doings will he recompense him

English Explanation

Though Judah was previously praised, they are not immune to judgment. God enters into a legal dispute (“controversy”) with them as well. Using “Jacob” to represent the entire nation, God warns that His judgment is perfectly fair: He will repay them exactly according to their sinful actions and rebellious ways.

Hosea 12:3

Complete Verse

He took his brother by the heel in the womb and by his strength he had power with God

English Explanation

Hosea recalls the historical roots of the nation by looking at their ancestor Jacob. Even before birth, Jacob grabbed his brother Esau’s heel, signaling a life of struggle and striving. However, as he matured, his wrestling transformed into a spiritual striving—using his strength not just to deceive men, but to earnestly seek and prevail with God.

Hosea 12:4

Complete Verse

Yea he had power over the angel and prevailed he wept and made supplication unto him he found him in Bethel and there he spake with us

English Explanation

This refers to Jacob’s famous wrestling match at Peniel (Genesis 32). Jacob prevailed over the divine Messenger not by physical might, but through brokenness, weeping, and sincere prayer (“made supplication”). God also met him at Bethel, establishing a covenant that extended to all his descendants—meaning God spoke not just to Jacob, but “with us” (the nation).

Hosea 12:5

Complete Verse

Even the LORD God of hosts the LORD is his memorial

English Explanation

This verse exalts the unchangeable, eternal nature of God. He is Yahweh, the God of Hosts (armies of heaven). His name “The LORD” is His eternal memorial—the name by which He revealed Himself to Moses and the patriarchs. It reminds Israel that the same powerful, covenant-keeping God of their ancestors is still available to them if they return.

Hosea 12:6

Complete Verse

Therefore turn thou to thy God keep mercy and judgment and wait on thy God continually

English Explanation

Based on God’s eternal faithfulness, the prophet issues a clear, practical command. Repentance requires three things: returning to God, practicing loving-kindness (“mercy”) and fairness (“judgment”) toward others, and maintaining patient, continual trust (“wait on thy God”) in His timing and provision rather than relying on pagan nations.

Hosea 12:7

Complete Verse

He is a merchant the balances of deceit are in his hand he loveth to oppress

English Explanation

The focus shifts back to Israel’s corrupt reality. Instead of being a holy nation, Israel has acted like a dishonest Canaanite merchant (the word “merchant” literally means Canaanite). They use rigged, deceptive scales in business and take pleasure in exploiting the poor and weak, showing that greed has entirely replaced God’s justice in their hearts.

Hosea 12:8

Complete Verse

And Ephraim said Yet I am become rich I have found me out substance in all my labours they shall find none iniquity in me that were sin

English Explanation

This verse exposes Israel’s deep spiritual blindness and self-righteousness. Ephraim boasts about their material wealth, believing that financial success proves God’s approval. They falsely claim that because they have gotten rich through hard work (“my labours”), no one can convict them of any actual sin or systemic injustice.

Hosea 12:9

Complete Verse

And I that am the LORD thy God from the land of Egypt will yet make thee to dwell in tabernacles as in the days of the solemn feast

English Explanation

God answers their arrogance by reminding them that He has been their God since He rescued them from Egypt. Because they have forgotten Him in their luxury, He will strip them of their wealth and force them to live in tents (“tabernacles”) again. This is a prophecy of exile, mimicking the wilderness wanderings, though it also hints at the Feast of Tabernacles, where Israel remembered God’s provision in times of poverty.

Hosea 12:10

Complete Verse

I have also spoken by the prophets and I have multiplied visions and used similitudes by the ministry of the prophets

English Explanation

Israel cannot plead ignorance. God explains that He continuously tried to guide, warn, and save them. He used multiple methods: direct prophetic messages, vivid spiritual visions, and practical parables or allegories (“similitudes”) through His prophets. The responsibility for their destruction lies solely on their refusal to listen to divine warnings.

Hosea 12:11

Complete Verse

Is there iniquity in Gilead surely they are vanity they sacrifice bullocks in Gilgal yea their altars are as heaps in the furrows of the fields

English Explanation

Gilead and Gilgal were prominent historical and religious locations that became centers of idolatry. God pronounces that Gilead is full of wickedness and spiritual worthlessness (“vanity”). In Gilgal, they sacrifice bulls to false gods. Their unauthorized pagan altars are so numerous that they look like random heaps of stones piled up in a plowed field, defiling the land.

Hosea 12:12

Complete Verse

And Jacob fled into the country of Syria and Israel served for a wife and for a wife he kept sheep

English Explanation

Hosea briefly returns to the history of Jacob to contrast his humble beginnings with the current arrogance of his descendants. Jacob had to flee to Syria (Aram) to escape his brother’s wrath. He owned nothing and had to work hard as a humble shepherd for many years just to earn a wife (Rachel and Leah). The prophet urges the wealthy, proud nation to remember their modest roots.

Hosea 12:13

Complete Verse

And by a prophet the LORD brought Israel out of Egypt and by a prophet was he preserved

Explanation

This verse contrasts Jacob’s individual escape to Syria with the national exodus from Egypt. God used a single prophet (Moses) to deliver the entire nation from slavery and to sustain, protect, and preserve them through the dangerous wilderness. It emphasizes that Israel owes its very existence and survival to God’s prophetic guidance, which they are now rejecting.

Hosea 12:14

Complete Verse

Ephraim provoked him to anger most bitterly therefore shall he leave his blood upon him and his reproach shall his Lord return unto him

English Explanation

Despite God’s historic goodness, Ephraim (Israel) has bitterly provoked God to anger through persistent idolatry and injustice. Because they refuse to repent, God will not cleanse or remove their bloodguilt; they must face the lethal consequences of their sins. The dishonor, shame, and “reproach” they cast upon God’s name will be returned onto their own heads through judgment.

Hosea 13:1

Complete Verse

When Ephraim spake trembling he exalted himself in Israel but when he offended in Baal he died

English Explanation

In the early days of the nation, Ephraim was influential and highly respected; when they spoke, others listened with trembling and awe. However, their downfall came when they turned to the worship of Baal (the Canaanite fertility god). Spiritual compromise led to immediate spiritual death, which quickly paved the way for political and national destruction.

Hosea 13:2

Complete Verse

And now they sin more and more and have made them molten images of their silver and idols according to their own understanding all of it the work of the craftsmen they say of them Let the men that sacrifice kiss the calves

English Explanation

Instead of learning from past mistakes, the people compound their sins. They use their wealth (silver) to manufacture cast idols according to human imagination (“their own understanding”). Hosea mocks the absurdity of worshiping objects made by human craftsmen, pointing out the delusion where human beings are commanded to worship and kiss cold, metallic calf idols.

Hosea 13:3

Complete Verse

Therefore they shall be as the morning cloud and as the early dew that passeth away as the chaff that is driven with the whirlwind out of the floor and as the smoke out of the chimney

Explanation

Because of their ephemeral, unstable faith and worthless idols, God uses four powerful metaphors to describe Israel’s fast-approaching disappearance: they will vanish like a morning cloud, like early morning dew dried up by the sun, like chaff blown away from a threshing floor by a whirlwind, and like smoke dissipating from a chimney. Their national existence will leave no trace.

Hosea 13:4

Complete Verse

Yet I am the LORD thy God from the land of Egypt and thou shalt know no god but me for there is no saviour beside me

English Explanation

God concludes this section with a powerful, exclusive declaration of His sovereignty. Despite their continuous unfaithfulness, He reminds them of the first commandment: He has been their covenant Lord since Egypt. They have no theological or historical basis to acknowledge any other deity, because history has proven that there is absolutely no savior, deliverer, or protector besides Him alone.
