Verse-by-Verse Commentary
Hebrews 13:14
Verse: “For here have we no continuing city but we seek one to come”
English Explanation: This verse serves as a powerful reminder of the temporary nature of our earthly existence. It highlights that the world we live in is not our permanent home. Instead, believers are urged to look forward to the eternal city—the heavenly Jerusalem—prepared by God. It calls for a mindset of spiritual pilgrimage, encouraging Christians not to get overly attached to worldly possessions or statuses.
Hebrews 13:15
Verse: “By him therefore let us offer the sacrifice of praise to God continually that is the fruit of our lips giving thanks to his name”
English Explanation: Through Jesus Christ, believers are called to offer a different kind of sacrifice—not of animals, but of praise and thanksgiving. This “fruit of our lips” should be offered continually, not just when circumstances are favorable. It emphasizes that worship is an ongoing attitude of gratitude toward God for His grace and salvation.
Hebrews 13:16
Verse: “But to do good and to communicate forget not for with such sacrifices God is well pleased”
English Explanation: Praise must be accompanied by practical actions. To “communicate” here means to share resources and fellowship with those in need. The author stresses that doing good works and helping others are spiritual sacrifices that bring immense joy and pleasure to God. True worship is both vertical (to God) and horizontal (to neighbors).
Hebrews 13:17
Verse: “Obey them that have the rule over you and submit yourselves for they watch for your souls as they that must give account that they may do it with joy and not with grief for that is unprofitable for you”
English Explanation: This verse addresses church leadership and the responsibility of the congregation. Believers are instructed to respect, obey, and submit to their spiritual leaders who shepherd them. These leaders carry a heavy burden because they must give an account of their ministry to God. Making their job joyful rather than sorrowful benefits the spiritual health of the entire community.
Hebrews 13:18
Verse: “Pray for us for we trust we have a good conscience in all things willing to live honestly”
English Explanation: The author requests intercessory prayer from the believers, displaying humility. Leaders need prayer just as much as anyone else. The author maintains that their intentions are pure and that they possess a clear conscience, with a sincere desire to live uprightly and honestly in every aspect of life.
Hebrews 13:19
Verse: “But I beseech you the rather to do this that I may be restored to you the sooner”
English Explanation: There is a personal plea here for urgent prayer so that whatever obstacles are preventing the author from visiting the community may be removed. It highlights the early Christian belief in the sovereign power of prayer to impact physical circumstances and reunite believers.
Hebrews 13:20
Verse: “Now the God of peace that brought again from the dead our Lord Jesus that great shepherd of the sheep through the blood of the everlasting covenant”
English Explanation: This begins a profound, beautiful benediction. God is characterized as the “God of peace,” the one who raised Jesus from the dead. Jesus is described as the “great shepherd,” and His resurrection validates the “everlasting covenant” sealed by His own blood, which brings ultimate reconciliation between God and humanity.
Hebrews 13:21
Verse: “Make you perfect in every good work to do his will working in you that which is wellpleasing in his sight through Jesus Christ to whom be glory for ever and ever Amen”
English Explanation: The benediction continues with a prayer for the believers’ spiritual equipping. The goal is for God to mature (“perfect”) them so they can do His will. It recognizes that any good work we perform is actually God working inside us through Jesus Christ, to whom all eternal glory belongs.
Hebrews 13:22
Verse: “And I beseech you brethren suffer the word of exhortation for I have written a letter unto you in few words”
English Explanation: The author gently asks the readers to receive this “word of exhortation” (encouragement and correction) with patience and an open heart. Despite the deep theological truths covered in the Book of Hebrews, the author considers it a relatively brief summary compared to the vastness of the subject matter.
Hebrews 13:23
Verse: “Know ye that our brother Timothy is set at liberty with whom if he come shortly I will see you”
English Explanation: This updates the readers on historical and personal matters within the early church. Timothy, a close companion of Paul, had been released from prison. The author expresses hope that if Timothy arrives soon, they will travel together to visit the congregation.
Hebrews 13:24
Verse: “Salute all them that have the rule over you and all the saints They of Italy salute you”
English Explanation: Final greetings are extended to the leaders and all the members (“saints”) of the church community. The mention of “They of Italy salute you” indicates either the location from which the letter was written or a group of Italian believers sending their love back home.
Hebrews 13:25
Verse: “Grace be with you all Amen Written to the Hebrews from Italy by Timothy”
English Explanation: The letter concludes with a classic apostolic blessing of grace. Grace is the foundational truth of Christian life. The postscript text historically notes its dispatch to the Hebrews.
James 1:1
Verse: “James a servant of God and of the Lord Jesus Christ to the twelve tribes which are scattered abroad greeting”
English Explanation: James, likely the brother of Jesus, introduces himself humbly as a “servant” rather than highlighting his physical relation to Christ. He addresses the “twelve tribes scattered abroad,” referring to Jewish Christians living outside of Palestine, offering them a standard but warm greeting.
James 1:2
Verse: “My brethren count it all joy when ye fall into divers temptations”
English Explanation: James introduces a radical perspective on suffering. He tells believers to consider it “all joy” when facing various trials and testing (“temptations”). This does not mean finding joy in pain itself, but rather rejoicing in the spiritual growth and eternal purpose that God accomplishes through these difficulties.
James 1:3
Verse: “Knowing this that the trying of your faith worketh patience”
English Explanation: The reason for joy during trials is explained here: trials test our faith, and this testing produces endurance, steadfastness, and patience. Faith that is never tested remains weak; testing strengthens our spiritual stamina.
James 1:4
Verse: “But let patience have her perfect work that ye may be perfect and entire wanting nothing”
English Explanation: Believers are encouraged not to short-circuit the process of testing. Patience must be allowed to complete its process so that the believer can achieve spiritual maturity (“perfect and entire”), lacking no vital spiritual quality.
James 1:5
Verse: “If any of you lack wisdom let him ask of God that giveth to all men liberally and upbraideth not and it shall be given him”
English Explanation: If a believer does not understand how to navigate trials, they should pray for wisdom. God is described as a generous giver who bestows wisdom freely without finding fault (“upbraideth not”) or making the asker feel ashamed.
James 1:6
Verse: “But let him ask in faith nothing wavering For he that wavereth is like a wave of the sea driven with the wind and tossed”
English Explanation: The condition for receiving wisdom is unwavering faith. A person who doubts God’s goodness or power while praying is compared to a wave of the sea—unstable, driven back and forth by changing circumstances and emotions.
James 1:7
Verse: “For let not that man think that he shall receive any thing of the Lord”
Explanation: James frankly states that a doubting, unstable person should not expect to receive anything from God. It is not that God is unwilling to give, but rather that the individual’s lack of faith and divided loyalty block them from receiving His blessings.
James 1:8
Verse: “A double minded man is unstable in all his ways”
English Explanation: A “double-minded” person is someone split between faith and doubt, or between God and the world. Such internal division leads to complete instability, not just in prayer life, but across every aspect of their choices and conduct.
James 1:9
Verse: “Let the brother of low degree rejoice in that he is exalted”
Explanation: James speaks on socio-economic status within the church. A poor believer (“of low degree”) should rejoice because, in Christ, they are spiritually rich and hold a high, exalted spiritual standing as a child of the King.
James 1:10
Verse: “But the rich in that he is made low because as the flower of the grass he shall pass away”
English Explanation: Conversely, a rich person should find humility in being “made low” by recognizing that earthly wealth is fleeting. Just like a fragile wildflower, the rich man’s physical life and material wealth will eventually fade away.
James 1:11
Verse: “For the sun is no sooner risen with a burning heat but it withereth the grass and the flower thereof falleth and the grace of the fashion of it perisheth so also shall the rich man fade away in his ways”
English Explanation: James uses a vivid agricultural metaphor: the scorching sun quickly dries up grass, causing its beautiful flower to fall and die. In the exact same way, a wealthy person who focuses purely on material gains will fade away in the middle of their busy pursuits. True security lies only in God.
